PRebiotic Intervention for Metabolic and MEntal Health (PRIME)

The purpose of the study is to determine whether a daily prebiotic fibre blend can reduce systemic inflammation, dyslipidemia, and self-report measures of mental health in individuals with metabolic syndrome. This study will help shape a larger randomised controlled study (RCT) powered to assess efficacy in a bigger cohort of patients. Primary outcome measures will explore the efficacy of a prebiotic fibre blend on systemic inflammation. Secondary and exploratory outcomes measures will explore the efficacy of the prebiotic blend on clinical biomarkers associated with cardiometabolic risk factors, microbiota features, and mental health. Using these data, we will also estimate in-year savings for the NHS in the metabolic syndrome population on a per participant basis.

A Single-Arm, Virtual Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Effects of a Sleep Supporting Beverage and Two Coffee Substitute Products

This is a virtual, single-arm clinical trial that will last 12 weeks. Participants will trial three different products, each for 4 weeks. Participants will trial Clevr Blends Sleeptime during weeks 1-4, Clevr Matcha for weeks 5-8, and Clevr Blends Chai for weeks 9-12. Participants will complete questionnaires at Baseline and Week 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. In addition to data will be collected from participants' sleep tracking devices at Baseline, Week 2, and Week 4.

It is not known if an increase in fermented food intake relative to an individuals' habitual diet can lead to improvements in bloating, mood, or hunger levels, or increase energy levels (and reduce fatigue) in the general population. Acceptability of fermented foods across many different types of people and households is also unclear. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the potential effects of increasing fermented food intake on these outcomes, as well as the feasibility of this dietary change.

Diabetes and Cognitive Functions in Middle Age

This study will examine the effects of type II diabetes on cognitive functions and mood in middle-aged patients. In addition, the association between cognitive functions and glycemic controls is studied in patients. Sixty patients and sixty healthy controls will be recruited and assessed by a multiprofessional team (neuropsychologist, physician).

Diet, Food, Exercise and Nutrition During Social Distancing

Our long-term goal is to contribute to the development of evidence-based nutritional and physical activity recommendations for the prevention and management of overweight and obesity and related chronic diseases. The overall objective for this study is to determine if a 20-week educational program, project DFEND, related to behavior change and health will improve nutrition and physical activity outcomes as well as indicators of wellbeing. Our central hypothesis is that regular attendance of weekly lectures, weekly meetings with personalized coaches, and weekly health challenges via virtual platforms (e.g. Zoom, Facebook, YouTube) will improve health outcomes related to nutrition and physical activity. Our rationale for these studies is that the results of this research will enhance the potential to develop evidence-based nutritional and physical activity behavioral recommendations to treat and/or prevent development of overweight and obesity.

Stand Up Kansas: An Intervention to Reduce Sedentary Behavior in the Home Work Environment

This project will examine the effectiveness of an intervention to reduce sedentary behavior in Kansas State University employees who are primarily working from home. We will recruit 100 employees to participate. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of four conditions: desk only, program only, desk + program, or waitlist control. The program will consist of strategies to reduce sitting and increase physical activity in the home environment. We will assess whether the intervention successfully elicits reductions in sitting among employees, as well as changes in cardiometabolic and work-related outcomes.

This study will include any participant who registered, and plans to attend the Inner Engineering In-Person Completion Course. In 2019, this course was offered in: Los Angeles in March, Philadelphia in April and Toronto & Dallas in November. This study has been involved in every IECO Course since 2019 and is still active today. Beginning in August 2021, investigators will recruit for the August Inner Engineering In-Person Completion Course. Investigators anticipate that this study can include up to 5,000 study participants. Participants would attend this course and complete the pre-modules regardless of whether or not they participate in this study.
