Filter by:This study is testing the efficacy of the integrative approach to: 1. teach 5th grade children menu board calorie literacy as measured by our novel recently validated menu board calorie literacy (MBCL) instrument; 2. provide strategies designed to improve food purchasing behaviors; and 3. facilitate the transmission of core lesson messages from children to parents via a procedure that we have termed "Child Mediated Health Communication (CMHC)".
Patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCC) have a range of needs that extend beyond traditional medical care, including behavioral, mental health, and social needs. While primary care does its best to address these needs, few practices can undertake a systematic approach without broader health system and coordinated community support. Fortunately, communities and health systems are investing in new models of care to address these needs. New tools are emerging that allow for enhanced care planning to identify and prioritize patients' needs based on their values, preferences, social, and clinical context. Additionally, support systems to promote partnerships between patients and clinical and community care teams are emerging. Building on work occurring as part of the Richmond Accountable Health Community, the investigators propose to (a) evaluate the implementation of an enhanced care planning approach, paired with community-clinical linkages support to address health behavior, mental health, and social needs; (b) determine within a randomized controlled trial the benefit of this approach compared to usual care; and (c) assess which person, family, community, and system contextual factors that influence MCC.
Nutritional factors are responsible for 10% of the global health burden. In Israel, 31% of Jewish women and 52% of Arab women are obese. It is predicted that this generation will see increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) and decreased life expectancy. Sustained lifestyle changes including small changes in nutrition behavior, can substantially reduce the risk of CVD. Eating habits are affected by different abilities, circumstances, and skill sets, however, most nutrition programs focus on nutrition facts, and less on skills that can help translate knowledge to positive health behaviors and health outcomes. In the last decade a new field has emerged, Food literacy (FL), which acknowledges the importance of addressing skills such as nutrition knowledge, competencies, self-efficacy, literacy and health literacy, so as to enable positive change in nutrition behaviors. Food literacy, in summary, is the capability to make healthy food choices in different contexts, settings and situations. The proposed program seeks to improve nutrition behaviors in disadvantaged communities via a train-the-trainers program, that will provide community leaders with the tools necessary to disseminate FL skills through the framework of existing community social-structures.
The Childhood Healthy Weights Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a family-based pilot program that will promote healthy lifestyle practices for families whose children are off the healthy weight trajectory (e.g., BMI ≥ 85th percentile for age and sex) that do not need the intensive services of medically supervised programs. It is a lifestyle behaviour approach for promoting healthy weights in children. The EIP program consists of 10 weekly intervention sessions (1.5 hours per session) followed by 4 maintenance sessions and is age specific (age 8-12). During the intervention, participants will also have access to digital educational content that is supplementary to what is provided during the individual sessions. The program will be integrated and aligned with existing BC-specific childhood healthy weights programs (e.g. the HealthLinkBC Eating and Activity Program for Kids). The EIP pilot will run from October-December 2018 with 8 child programs (age 8-12). Participants who do not qualify for this program (e.g., BMI ≤ 85th percentile for age and sex) will be offered a 10 week online program which is similar in educational content as the EIP program.
BACKGROUND: The physiological and psychological benefits of regular physical activity (PA) and reduced sedentary behavior are well documented. Nevertheless, the majority of adolescents in western countries, e.g., Switzerland, do not meet the recommendations for moderate to vigorous PA of at least one hour per day. Planning interventions, defined as the creation of plans when, where and how to engage in a behavior change, have been proposed as an effective way of translating intentions into action. AIM: The project aims at closing the empirical gap of the question whether or not planning interventions of PA in adolescents are successful and which planning intervention is the most effective one. In detail, it is aimed for to examine changes in (daily) moderate to vigorous physical activity in adolescents' friendship dyads following (a) an individual planning intervention, (b) a collaborative planning intervention or (c) one of the two no-planning control conditions. Changes in (daily) physical activity will be examined over a period of 6-months. By investigating the intervention effect systematically by means of daily diaries, long-term follow-ups and objective measurements this project will provide a novel knowledge about individual self-regulating mechanism and social exchange processes as the mediating mechanism of the effectiveness of individual and collaborative planning for health behavior change in adolescents. DESIGN: Single-blind four-arm parallel-group cluster-randomized controlled trial with longitudinal design. The assessment of the main and secondary outcomes is conducted at the baseline, at 1 week after the first intervention session, and at 1-, and 6-month follow-ups. The intervention consists of one planning session and one booster session after 1-month. PARTICIPANTS: The sample will consist of 400 friendship dyads between 14 and 18 years of age. A cluster-randomization will assign participants to one of the two planning groups (collaborative or individual) or one of the two control groups. Both partners of the friendship dyad will complete all questionnaires. OUTCOMES: Physical activity constitutes the main outcome, whereas self-regulatory strategies like planning, self-efficacy, as well as social exchange processes like social support are secondary outcomes.
Grip&Health: randomised trial which will examine the effect of theory-based multicomponent behavioural intervention for reducing stress, smoking and improving financial health and perceived health of low-SES residents in Rotterdam. Between January 2018 and July 2018, a total of 300 participants will be recruited and randomised either to a stress management program (SM), stress management with a buddy program (SM-B) or a control condition. The investigators hypothesise that compared to participants in the control condition, participants in the intervention arms will demonstrate reduced stress, reduced smoking and improved financial health and perceived health.
The increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is a worldwide problem. In preventing risk factors and unhealthy lifestyle through improved health literacy, chances are seen to delay or even avoid type 2 diabetes mellitus. The aim of the DIMINI-project is to prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus and to strengthen the health literacy of people at increased risk of developing it. For this purpose, people at increased risk are first identified by using the standardized screening tool Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) adapted for Germany. Identified risk persons then receive a needs-based, modular lifestyle intervention including nutrition tips and physical exercises either paper- or app-based.
An accumulating body of research indicates that activities such as exercise, active cognitive and social engagement, good sleep hygiene, stress reduction and proper nutrition are associated with the maintenance of cognitive health. Emerging data also suggests that healthy lifestyle behaviors may promote brain plasticity. Despite nationwide efforts to raise public awareness about brain health, there remains a gap concerning how to best promote behavioral change and help at-risk middle-aged and older adults adopt effective, evidence-based brain health behaviors into their everyday lives to maximize cognitive health. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a 7-week group brain fitness intervention (B-Fit) for increasing preventative brain health behaviors and enhancing cognitive health in participants at-risk for cognitive impairment. We will also examine mechanisms of action of the B-Fit intervention through tracking of behavioral responses in the real-world environment using wearable sensors.
The ability to interact with conspecifics is crucial in life, yet there is no consensus on the underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms beyond those associated with imitative behaviors. This project aims to define a coherent model of non-imitative (complementary) motor interactions. The investigators hypothesize that these might be substantially based on the ability to integrate one's own and a partner's action within a unitary, dual- person (dyadic), motor plan that incorporates a shared goal. With a novel "minimally-joint" paradigm the investigators will test this hypothesis and measure with behavioral measures (i.e., reaction times) whether the supposedly automatic tendency to imitate others is modulated by the need to coordinate with a partner to achieve a shared goal. This paradigm will be also applied during a functional MRI experiment to describe the underlying neurophysiological patterns; using dynamic causal modeling the investigators will measure how the brain regions relevant for dyadic motor control are functionally linked. This converging experimental strategy will permit to compare competing psychological and neural models of motor interactions in healthy participants, opening new experimental avenues for studies in adult neuropsychological patients and in children with typical and atypical social development.
Obesity and overweight are growing steadily and becoming a global epidemic. Recent researches report a 64% of the adult population as overweight. The social and economical impact is increasing and the most of the rehabilitation programs, while effective in the short term, do not produce long lasting results. From a behavioral perspective an explanatory model can describe the phenomena with the lack of sources of reinforcement related to healthy habits in the daily-life context. The goal of this project, combining Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Wearable Technology, is to develop an effective intervention, efficient and sustainable, which continues after ending of the hospitalization, providing adequate contingencies of reinforcement in the natural environment, integrating systematic measurements, continuous feedbacks and individualized, values-based objectives. Related goal-setting show a shift from results linked with weight loss towards action connected with healthy life-style.
