The Impact of Motivation in Return to Work After Work Disability

The current research on the impact of motivation in return to work after work disability has 2 major parts: (1) a questionnaire study for which SMEC gave approval, this part is completed, (2) a RCT. The RCT will compare two groups: (a) a consult as usual (a regular consult with the medical advisor) and (b) an intervention based on motivational interviewing performed by a medical advisor.

Promoting HIV Self-testing Among MSM During COVID-19 Pandemic

A community-based organization (CBO) recruited Chinese-speaking men who have sex with men who are HIV-negative or unknown sero-status through multiple channels in Hong Kong, China. Participants first complete a baseline telephone survey, and then receive the following health promotion components: 1) viewing an online video promoting HIVST, 2) visiting the project webpage containing demonstration video of how to use HIVST kits, information about local HIV epidemic and benefits of HIV testing and HIVST, and a discussion forum containing positive feedback of HIVST users, and 3) having access to a chargeable HIVST services implemented by the CBO. All participants are invited to complete a follow-up telephone survey six months after completion of the baseline survey.

Prostate Cancer Genius App Education and Home-based PSA Screening for African American Men

Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in African American men and the second-leading cause of cancer-related death. The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test is an early detection screening measure for prostate cancer. Greater PSA uptake among African Americans may reduce the disproportionate mortality burden of this disease. However, knowledge about prostate cancer and uptake of PSA screening remain low among African American men. To address this inequity, innovative team science approaches are required. This project proposes to develop and test the first-of-its-kind Prostate Cancer Genius App to improve knowledge of prostate cancer risk and symptoms, and deliver tailored navigation to complete a home-based PSA test. The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of the Prostate Cancer Genius App in a 30-day pilot randomized control trial compared to an existing app developed by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (Prevention Taskforce App). African American men from Oklahoma, aged between 55 and 69 (N = 80), eligible for the PSA test will be randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either app. Three dimensions of app feasibility will be assessed: (1) preliminary efficacy, evaluated via post-intervention differences in prostate cancer knowledge, (2) app engagement and accessibility, measured via self-report questionnaires, and (3) app acceptability, explored via semi-structured qualitative interviews. Finally, the investigative team will explore post-intervention PSA screening rates and identify predictors of screening/not screening across both arms. The successful demonstration of feasibility for the Prostate Cancer Genius App within Oklahoma will support expanding this intervention to African Americans nationwide.

Using Emails and Personalized Phone Calls to Increase Affordable Care Act Marketplace Enrollment Among Households Losing Medicaid

Since its passage in 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has helped reduce the uninsured rate to record lows, but changes in insurance coverage over time, known as churn, remain a concern. A recent survey found that nearly 25 percent of respondents reported a change in coverage over the previous twelve months. Among the most common reasons for churn is the loss of Medicaid eligibility, placing low-income populations at risk of a coverage gap. To date, little evidence exists on effective strategies states can use to facilitate Medicaid to Marketplace coverage transitions, an issue that has become more pressing amid projections that upwards of 15 million people could lose Medicaid eligibility once the COVID-19 public health emergency expires. To address this gap and to inform Marketplace administrators, during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) in 2017 in California's ACA Marketplace, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to examine the effect of email reminders, personalized telephone outreach, as well as the combination of the two forms of outreach on ACA enrollment among households who recently lost Medicaid and became eligible for subsidized Marketplace coverage. During the SEP at the end of August 2017, the investigators randomly assigned households to one of four arms based on the last digit of their household identifier: a control group assigned to receive no outreach beyond an initial eligibility determination notice; an email-only group assigned to receive an initial eligibility determination plus email reminders about signing up for marketplace coverage; a phone-only group assigned to receive an initial eligibility determination plus a phone call offering enrollment assistance from a service center representative (SCR); a phone + email group assigned to receive an initial eligibility determination, email reminders about signing up for marketplace coverage and a phone call offering enrollment assistance.

The coronavirus 2019 pandemic (COVID-19) strongly affected clinical care worldwide. Due to a shortage of hospitals and beds in intensive care units (ICU), in Italy during outbreaks, surgical resources were temporarily and partially shifted to COVID-19 patients. In addition, the risk of cross-infection could have determined a shit in surgical perioperative care. To counterbalance these limitations, many centers routinely changed their clinical practice, which could be maintained by surgeons across Italy. The aim of the present study is to evaluate how the COVID-19 pandemic determined a change in daily clinical practice among all specialties.

A Complex Health Promotion Intervention in Parasport - The Safe & Healthy Parasport Project

The interest in Para sport is steadily increasing. A concern is, though, that elite Para athletes report a high incidence of injuries and illnesses. Altogether, there is an urgent need to prevent such incidents among athletes already suffering from an impairment. However, most of the existing training-based prevention programmes are not adapted or accessible to Para athletes. Also, recent research suggests that sports safety work advantageously should facilitate disease prevention and health promotion. Such intervention would hypothetically also have the potential to reduce injuries, illnesses and improve health among Para athletes. To allow full implementation, the intervention would need to be adapted to the Para athletes´ various impairments, abilities and sports. MAIN QUESTIONS TO BE ADRESSED - Can an evidence-based eHealth health promotion platform prevent sports injuries and illnesses in elite para athletes over 6 months, 12 months and 5 years? - Can such platform improve overall health parameters such as sleep, nutrition and mental health in elite para athletes and influence the performance parameters training quantity and training quality over 6 months, 12 months and 5 years? - Can such platform improve health literacy among Para athletes?
