Risk Factors for Lower Extremity Overuse Injuries in Jump-landing Athletes

In this prospective study, male jump-landing athletes (volleyball and basketball) will be screened pre-season and followed for one consecutive season. Pre-season screening consists of 3D biomechanical analysis of standardized (such as drop vertical jump) and sports-specific jumps (such as stop-jump) before and after a high-intensity, intermittent exercise protocol and clinical field tests (such as force measurements).

Impact of Baduanjin Qigong Exercise on Fatigue in Patients With NSCLC Undergoing Adjuvant Chemotherapy

Baduanjin,a type of Qigong which belongs to aerobic exercise, is very popular in China. There is increasing evidence to support its positive effects on health outcomes in various groups of people with physical and mental disorders. In college students, it may enhance cardio respiratory function, lower limb function, and flexibility compared with usual exercise. However, there is no previous relevant randomized controlled trials on the health promoting effects of Baduanjin exercise in targeted fatigued lung cancer patients. Lung cancer survivors can experience fatigue due to multiple reasons that can strongly impact their quality of life throughout the remainder of their life. Therefore, this randomized controlled trial in China was designed to assess the health promoting effects of Baduanjin exercise in fatigued lung cancer patients with the expectation of improvement in physical and psychological health.

Effectiveness of Fatigue and Activity Management in Work (FAME-W) for Individuals With Inflammatory Arthritis

Many individuals with Inflammatory Arthritis (IA) experience symptoms of pain and fatigue which interfere with work. Over 50% of people with IA report workplace difficulties resulting in sick leave, absenteeism and reduced productivity. Loss of ability to continue paid employment results in physical, emotional and financial hardship for individuals with IA and has societal and economic implications. Previous research has identified pain and fatigue as dominant symptoms that interfere with work capacity and therefore interventions are required to reduce the impact of these symptoms on work activities. The purpose of this study therefore is to test the effectiveness of a 4-week Fatigue and Activity Management Education for Work intervention. The study will use a mixed methods design. A randomized control trial will test the effectiveness of the intervention and a qualitative process evaluation with explore acceptability and participants' experiences of the intervention. Individuals with IA, of working age, will be recruited in Rheumatology outpatient departments of three hospitals. Study participants will be randomly assigned to a four-week online self-management intervention or a self-guided symptom management workbook. Study measures consist of self-report questionnaires related to work and symptom management. All participants will also be invited to an interview to discuss their experience of participating in the study.

Effect of Gender on Distress and Fatigue in Cancer Patients

Distress in cancer patients has been shown to be higher in females than males, but the behavior of distress during time in longitudinal prospective studies has not been studied, nor is it known if there are differences related to gender during time. These differences may have important therapeutic implications in terms of selective psychological support as cancer progresses during individual trajectories. The aim of the present study is to examine the effect of gender during time on psychological distress and fatigue in cancer patients across a broad range of cancer types. It is hypothesized that women will report higher psychological distress than men at initial visit but a reversed trend will be observed during follow-up as a result of different coping capabilities between men and women. We will also investigate if psychological factors (distress, anxiety and depression) affected antibody response and markers of COVID-19 vaccine activation (C-reactive protein, CRP and D-dimer) after 6 months from initial vaccination. Caregivers will also be interviewed to measure their burden with the Zarit Burden Interview. Patients attending a cancer outpatient clinic are invited to undergo a psychological session immediately before the medical visit. Distress is assessed by the Distress thermometer and fatigue by the ESAS-r scale at the end of the session. Patients will undergo follow-up visits to assess changes during time and possible time by gender interactions.

A Potential Role for Oxygen in the Development of Mental Fatigue and the Subsequent Decline in Cognitive Performance

Introduction Both Mental Fatigue (MF) and hypoxia impair multiple aspects of cognitive functioning. The decline in cognitive functioning in hypoxic conditions is associated with alterations in brain oxygenation and hemodynamic responses. These hemodynamic responses are preferably measured at the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain that is known for its executive function and role in decision making, planning, attention and (short-term) memory. This study will investigate the role of prefrontal cortex oxygenation during the development of mental fatigue and during cognitive performances by altering the ambient oxygen availability through normobaric hypoxia (3800m; 12,9% O2) and normoxia. Methods Subjects will perform four trials in a sound-insulated climate chamber (20°C and 40% RH). Upon entry in the climatic chamber participants will adapt to the environment for 30 minutes. Next, they will perform a modified cognitive test battery "cognition", a fine motor task "Motor Performance Series" and a visuomotor-fitlight task before and after a 60-minute individualized Stroop task or control task (randomized. blinded, placebo controlled, counter-balanced, cross-over design). Nearinfrared spectroscopy (NIRS) will be used to assess hemodynamic changes (oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb), deoxygenated-hemoglobin (HHb) and total hemoglobin (tHb)) at the PFC. Hypotheses 1) MF will lead to earlier changes in the prefrontal NIRS-parameters (O2Hb, HHb, tHb) with lower oxygen availability. 2) The effects of MF on cognitive performance manifest itself to a greater extent with lower oxygen availability.3) Visuomotor performance declines to a greater extent due to MF with lower oxygen availability.

Evaluating the Impact of Focused Muscle Contraction Therapy in U.S. Veterans

This research study is being done to investigate if the GH Method exercise program positively affects body composition, improves physical abilities and can improve the overall sense of wellbeing (e.g. depression, PTSD, etc.) in U.S. Veterans. Subjects will be asked to complete 94 total visits (four (4) study testing visits and 90 exercise visits). Enrolled subjects will be tested for fitness, strength, and health risk factors at UIC 4 times and will complete 90 exercise training visits at the GH FITLab over the next 18 months. Subjects will also be asked to complete questionnaires about depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms and thoughts about harming oneself.
