Inorganic Nitrate: Sex Differences in Muscle Contractile Function and Efficiency

Dietary inorganic nitrate, in the form of beet root juice, is a nutritional intervention, considered to be an exercise enhancer due to its capacity to increase Nitric Oxide (NO) bioavailability. Increasing NO bioavailability has been associated with improved mitochondrial respiration, muscle tissue perfusion and contractile function which may lead to improved exercise capacity. However, the majority of the literature is on male subjects. This limits the applicability of this supplement in females. Therefore, our project aims to determine sex-differences and the specific sex-response across the menstrual cycle of dietary nitrate supplementation on exercise efficiency, strength and fatigue resistance.

tAN to Mitigate Withdrawal Behaviors in Neonates

This first in-human-neonates, open-label pilot trial is designed to determine whether use of tAN in newborns with NOWS receiving oral morphine allows for faster weaning of morphine and decrease morphine use altogether. Reducing Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) symptoms may also help lessen or eliminate the need for opioid medication and shorten the length of the hospital stay. The neurostimulation device, currently called the Roo is a safe form of neurostimulation that uses sticker-like patches worn in and around the ear during the withdrawal period. The patches deliver a small and painless current of electrical pulses to the skin and underlying cranial nerves.

This study will evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of a simultaneous treatment by high power magnet and radiofrequency energy for toning of abdomen and reduction of subcutaneous fat. The study is a prospective multi-center single-blinded sham-controlled study. The subjects will be enrolled and assigned into two study groups; active and sham group. Subjects of both groups will be required to complete three (3) treatment visits and two to three follow-up visits.
