Embodiment in Virtual Reality as a Telemedicine Digital Therapeutic for the Treatment of Chronic Shoulder Pain

Chronic shoulder pain is a common musculoskeletal pain condition that can have a profound impact on a sufferer's life and a large socioeconomic healthcare burden to society. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of delivering telemedicine enabled functional shoulder rehabilitation for chronic shoulder pain patients using immersive virtual reality. Ten chronic shoulder pain patients were recruited from local pain clinics. Patients engaged in three sessions of virtual embodiment training per week over the course of eight weeks. Rehabilitation sessions were delivered on an Oculus Quest head-mounted display and hand controllers. Rehabilitation exercises (virtual embodiment training) leverage techniques from graded motor imagery, such as visual mirror feedback and augmentation of the virtual avatar's movements. Eight pain assessments were administered prior to the first session, and at weeks four and eight to get an indication of the effect that telemedicine delivered virtual embodiment training has on symptoms of chronic shoulder pain.

Using Mobile Technology to Address the Trauma Mental Health Treatment Gap

BounceBack Now (BBN) is a self-help, trauma-focused mental health mobile app with automated assessment with treatment guidance and in-app evidence-based treatment support for depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep difficulties, and anxiety. BBN contains many of the necessary components to promote self-management of these conditions. We will evaluate the apps feasibility and acceptability among underserved patients (e.g., African Americans and patient with lower socioeconomic status) with trauma histories in an integrated primary care (IPC) setting. There are two specific aims: 1) to develop educational materials for patients and behavioral health providers for BBN in IPC, and 2) to conduct a pilot trial of BBN for patients with trauma histories in an IPC setting. To achieve Aim 1, we will conduct focus groups with behavioral health providers and patients to obtain feedback about BBN and training materials. For Aim 2, a feasibility study with 15 patients will be conducted to identify and address any procedural issues and to refine the protocol before conducting the full-scale study.

This is an open-label, randomized, exploratory study to evaluate the human immune response to reduced subcutaneous (SQ) dosing of Yellow Fever vaccine compared to the standard FDA approved subcutaneous vaccination dose. The current dose of the US FDA licensed Yellow Fever vaccine is approximately 55,000 plaque-forming unit(s) (PFU) in 0.5 mL administered SQ. Using the licensed dosage as standard, investigators are evaluating reduced doses of 1/5th (0.10 mL) and 1/10th (0.05 mL) Yellow Fever vaccine (YF-VAX).

Testing Brief Personalized Feedback Integrating EMA Alcohol Cue Information

This study aims to develop a brief intervention that incorporates ecological momentary assessments (EMAs; i.e., four brief surveys per day for 17 days) to create personalized feedback targeting high-risk alcohol use among young adult drinkers. The intervention mainly focuses on providing feedback on individuals' drinking desire and how it varies as a function of a number of real-world factors. Other psycho-educational alcohol-related content is also provided in the intervention including strategies for decreasing exposure to cues that increase drinking desires and how to cope with increased desire to drink. This brief intervention will be used in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing young adults who receive the intervention with those who only complete identical assessments.

Testing a Digital Health Intervention App for Depression and Anxiety

Although mobile applications ("apps") for mental health are popular and widely available, little is known about how well they actually help people with common mental health symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. We are partnering with a commercially available app to test how well this app helps people's mental health over 8 weeks. Participants will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to two groups: (a) using the app, (b) no app until after 8 weeks. We will ask participants to complete online surveys about their mood and well-being so we can better understand the effects of these different treatments.
