The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban with warfarin for the prevention of blood clots in the brain (referred to as stroke) and blood clots in other parts of the body referred to as non-central nervous system systemic embolism) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder).

Heart transplanted patients often develop coronary artery disease and therefore have their coronary arteries examined with coronary angiography once a year.The purpose of the study is to validate computer tomography of the coronary arteries against coronary angiography and intravascular ultrasound in heart transplanted patients. Additionally the association between different inflammatory markers and the development of CAD specific to heart transplanted patients will be studied.
Pelvic organ prolapse is characterized by a lack of pelvic floor support causing the pelvic organs and vaginal walls to protrude. For decades, suture repair techniques have been the primary choice of surgical treatment when indicated. The notion of reinforcing pelvic floor defects using biomaterial implants is not an exclusively contemporary idea. Traditional surgical techniques are frequently associated with unsatisfying anatomical recurrence rates and over the years sporadic attempts have been made to introduce novel surgical techniques using a variety of biomaterials as support with varying success. It is plausible that inherently weak, or damaged, pelvic floor supportive tissues need to be reinforced by a permanent support to avoid the high rates of recurrences commonly described using traditional techniques. However, use of biomaterials in pelvic reconstructive surgery has become widespread in just a few years despite a lack of clinical safety data, or compelling clinical evidence demonstrating that it improves outcomes compared to traditional suture techniques. It is likely that biomaterials need to be "anchored" in tissues not afflicted by the disease, in order to provide the intended pelvic floor support. This has given rise to transvaginal surgical techniques using a transobturator approach passing the mesh through the arcus tendineous fascia pelvis, or the sacrospinous ligaments through a transgluteal approach. Already commercially available implant materials are in need of patient safety documentation, both when considering the surgical techniques by which these materials are placed in the body as well as the actual materials. Complication rates and perioperative morbidity using these surgical routes in pelvic organ prolapse surgery are generally unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the long term morbidity, and describe the complications, associated with transvaginal mesh repair of pelvic organ prolapse using the PROLIFT®-system.

Bronchoscopy of non visible lesions in the lung, have a low diagnostic yield. The use of endoscopic ultrasound might increase the diagnostic yield. This prospective study randomises between bronchoscopy with the use of a ultrasound miniprobe and bronchoscopy without the use of a miniprobe in clinical practice at Haukeland University Hospital. The study hypothesis: The use of the ultrasound miniprobe will increase the diagnostic yield of bronchoscopy in non visible lesions.
Patients undergoing surgery, especially hip and knee surgery, are at high risk for VTE. The administration of drugs for thromboprophylaxis, such as heparins, significantly lowers that risk, but heparins have to be applied by injections below the skin. The purpose of this study was to compare the safety and efficacy of BAY 59-7939 with the safety and efficacy of the licensed drug enoxaparin and to find the optimal dose of BAY 59-7939 for the anticipated phase III trials. Enoxaparin, a so-called low molecular weight heparin, is approved and widely used in the area of thromboprophylaxis and was given once daily subcutaneously. In this study 5 different doses of the investigational drug BAY 59-7939 were tested in comparison to Enoxaparin. The following doses of BAY 59-7939 were tested: 2.5 mg twice daily (5 mg total daily dose); 5 mg twice daily (10 mg total daily dose), 10 mg twice daily (20 mg total daily dose), 20 mg twice daily (40 mg total daily dose) and 30 mg twice daily ( 60 mg total daily dose). This study ran for approximately 7 months in a number of countries. In total, 726 patients were enrolled in this study.
The project consists of two studies where we want to throw light on the importance of physical activity/exercise to maintain physical function among cancer patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Study I is a randomised intervention study where we want to study the effect of adjusted physical exercise compared to usual care. In study II our main aim is to validate different subjective and objective methods to measure physical functioning
