The trial is conducted in the United Kingdom (UK), Australia, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands. The aim is to test whether 3 years treatment with metformin added to titrated insulin therapy (towards target HbA1c 7.0%/53 mmol/mol) reduces atherosclerosis, as measured by progression of carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), in adults with confirmed type 1 diabetes aged 40 years and over at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.

A Study of RO5479599 Alone or in Combination With Cetuximab or Erlotinib in Participants With Metastatic and/or Locally Advanced Malignant Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (HER3) Expressing Solid Tumors of Epithelial Cell Origin

This dose-escalating study consists of 3 parts (A, B and C) and will evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of RO5479599, alone or in combination with cetuximab or erlotinib, in participants with metastatic and/or locally advanced malignant HER3-positive solid tumors. Cohorts of participants will receive escalating doses of intravenous RO5479599 as monotherapy (Part A) or in combination with cetuximab (in Part B) or with erlotinib (in Part C) followed by an extension phase for each part. In an imaging substudy, participants will receive one or two doses of zirconium-89-labeled RO5479599 (89ZrRO5479599) in addition to unlabeled RO5479599 to evaluate the in vivo biodistribution and organ pharmacokinetics of RO5479599.

Evaluation of an Influenza Vaccination Implementation Strategy for Hospital Health Care Workers

Influenza is a serious disease which can cause severe illness and even death among patients. Health care workers (HCWs) often get infected with influenza and up to 76% of them keep working while being ill. Immunizing HCWs is therefore an essential factor in protecting patients from influenza as HCWs easily transmit influenza to their patients. However, despite recommendations from the Dutch Health Council since 2007, vaccine uptake among HCWs remains low. The aim of this study is to develop an effective implementation strategy on the basis of previous behavioural studies and to evaluate its value in a clustered randomized trial in all Dutch University Medical Centers (UMCs). Also, we want to assess the program elements that are associated with a higher vaccine uptake and the cost-effectiveness of such an implementation strategy. The results of this study will give more insights in the way influenza vaccination campaigns should be directed in order to achieve high vaccine uptake rates among HCWs in hospitals.

Quantification of Contrast Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in the Detection of Prostate Cancer

With Contrast Enhanced UltraSound (CEUS) cancer induced neovascularisation can be visualised with the potential to improve ultrasound imaging for prostate cancer detection and localisation significantly. The past years numerous studies have been performed with CEUS, all basing their results on subjective judgement of the investigator. CEUS image interpretation is difficult and requires a well-trained expert. To overcome these difficulties CEUS quantification techniques can be of use. The techniques used in this protocol have been developed in cooperation with the Technical University in Eindhoven (TU/e) and BRACCO, Geneva. The investigators hypothesize improvement of the PCa detection rate with quantification, compared with subjective CEUS interpretation and known numbers in literature. Also a comparison between quantification results and tumour differentiation grade (Gleason score) will be made, the investigators hypothesize a positive correlation.
