This is an exploratory study to evaluate a new anti-inflammatory drug, PRX167700, in subjects with painful osteoarthritis of the knee. The purpose of this study is to investigate if PRX167700 improves the pain from osteoarthritis of the knee, and to assess its safety and tolerability. The study will also investigate PRX167700 pharmacokinetics.
We need human blood to understand the immune response to infection and to test promising new vaccines against infectious diseases in the laboratory. One test is called the Serum Bactericidal Assay (or SBA), which is measure of how effective antibodies are at killing certain bacteria and can be an important measure of how effective a new vaccine may be. The samples would be used in the laboratory analysis of clinical trials of vaccines used in adults and children, and some samples in pre-clinical (animal) experiments testing new vaccines before they enter human-stage testing. Most people have some form of protection against most bacteria already, so not everyone is a suitable blood donor for this laboratory test. We therefore start by taking a small blood sample and test this one before asking for more blood if we found yours suitable for the work we do.
The purpose of this study is to assess the safety and tolerability of multiple oral doses of CTX-4430 when administered to cystic fibrosis (CF) patients once-daily (QD) for 15 days.This study will include two dose levels. For each dose level, blood samples will be collected for exploratory PK and PD assay validation. In addition, sputum will be collected for exploratory biomarker analysis. Following multiple dose administration, pulmonary function and exploratory lung clearance index (LCI) measurements will be taken.
The aim of this clinical trial is to investigate the effect of Iota-Carrageenan treatment on cold symptoms. The effect of treatment on the duration of the cold and the patients viral load plus cytokine level indicating the inflammatory response will be analyzed.
Physical examination of the pelvis is an important core skill that medical students need to acquire. However, due to its intimate nature some students are graduating unable to perform competent pelvic examinations. Gynaecological Teaching Associates (GTA's) are women who have been trained to be examined and give valuable feedback to the students. In North America GTA's are quite commonly used in the medical curriculum and they have also been used in Canada, Australia and Scandinavia. In the UK pelvic examination is mainly taught using a combination of clinic patients, pelvic models and patients anaesthetised for surgery. In Birmingham we have already started using GTA's and like other Universities such as Oxford the students have given positive feedback. GTA's are paid professionals and hence introducing this method of teaching has financial implications for Universities. Unless it is proven to be worthwhile it is unlikely that academic institutions will introduce and maintain GTA programs. One UK study did show that those who had been trained with a GTA's and pelvic models were significantly better than those who had been trained with pelvic models alone. However, in this study the GTA training was supplementary to the normal curriculum so the amount of teaching rather than the style of teaching may have acted as a confounding factor. Therefore, a large randomised trial of trainees on the Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) programme comparing those given an initial teaching session on a pelvic model and those taught by GTA's is needed to assess the effectiveness of GTA's on confidence and competence of the students by the end of the training programme is needed.
The objective of the PLATFORM Study is to compare clinical outcomes, resource utilization, and quality of life (QOL) of FFRCT-guided evaluation versus standard practice evaluation in patients with suspected CAD in order to further inform patients, health care providers, and other stakeholders about which technologies are most effective and efficient in the diagnosis of CAD
This is an open-label repeat dose, multicenter, 2-part study to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and the recommended Phase 2 dose (RP2D) for GSK525762 given once-daily (QD) orally. Part 1 of the study is a dose escalation phase to select the recommended Part 2 dose (RP2D) based on the safety, PK, and PD profiles observed after oral administration of GSK525762. Eligible subjects with select relapsed refractory hematological malignancies (acute myeloid leukemia [AML], non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma [NHL]and multiple myeloma [MM]), will be enrolled in the QD and/or BID dosing cohorts until a MTD is established. Subjects may continue treatment in the study until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or withdrawal of consent. . Upon determination of the MTD, twice daily (BID) dosing cohorts may be opened to collect additional safety data and evaluate the preliminary efficacy of GSK525762 administered BID. Part 2 will explore clinical activity at the MTD or RP2D; separate expansion cohorts will be planned for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL, including an exploratory sub-cohort of subjects with myc and B-Cell Leukemia (BCL)2 and/or BCL6 rearrangements/overexpression [double- and triple-hit lymphoma]), and multiple myeloma (MM). This is the first study of this agent to be conducted in subjects with these relapsed and/or refractory hematological malignancies for which no standard therapies are anticipated to result in a durable remission.
A study to see what effect the geko™ device has on blood flow in patients with lower limb vascular disease.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the commonest condition affecting the rhythm of the heart and causes an irregular and often rapid heartbeat. Developing this condition may cause significant health problems and symptoms that affect normal day-to-day activities. Patients with AF also have a shorter life expectancy on average. Tablets used to try to normalise the heart rhythm rarely work well. As a result, doctors have devised a treatment to try to cure this condition. Special wires (called catheters) are used to deliver heat energy (called ablation) on the inside surface of the heart. This technique has been used more and more in recent years for patients with troublesome symptoms due to AF. The aim of the treatment is to draw lines of ablation in specific places in the heart. Unfortunately, a lot of patients (almost 50%) get AF again after this treatment and most of these patients have a second treatment performed. It is usually found at this second treatment that gaps have developed in the lines of ablation that were drawn the first time around. The investigators think that electively doing a second treatment to close these gaps a couple of months after the first treatment may mean that fewer of these patients will get AF again in the future. The investigators also want to find out what factors make a line of ablation less likely to develop gaps. In this study, participants will be assigned to one of two groups: 1. a "standard care" group, who will have a single treatment initially. 2. a "repeat study" group, who will have the initial treatment followed by a second treatment 8-10 weeks later. For patients in the "repeat study group", investigators will see how many have developed gaps since their first treatment. The investigators will look at where these gaps are and will compare this with information collected during the first treatment to try to work out why the gap has developed. Any gaps found at the second treatment will be closed again. All participants will then be monitored carefully over 12 months to see how many from each group get AF again. To do this, all participants will be given a handheld heart rhythm monitor to keep until the end of the study. This device is simple to use. Participants will be asked to make a 30 second recording of their heart rhythm each day and also whenever they have symptoms. These recordings will be downloaded at review appointments arranged 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after the initial ablation procedure.
