Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Existing Anti vascUlar Endothelial Growth Factor (Anti VEGF) in Patients With Wet Age-related Macular Degeneration (wAMD) (AURA)

Retrospective, non-interventional, observational multi-center field study. Patients diagnosed with wet Age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) and having started treatment with ranibizumab between January 1, 2009 and August 31, 2009 must be consecutively screened and, if eligible, enrolled. Patients will be followed up at maximum until August 31, 2011. Switch to any other Anti vascUlar endothelial growth factor (anti VEGF) treatment will be documented and followed up. For each patient, demographics, medical history, administered treatments, results of ocular and visual assessments and other tests (where available) will be documented.

Feasibility and Toxicity of Degarelix for Prostate Downsizing Prior to Permanent Seed Prostate Brachytherapy

This study will investigate the efficacy of Degarelix, a Luteinizing Hormone Releasing Hormone (LHRH) antagonist, to reduce prostate volume prior to permanent seed prostate brachytherapy. There are 2 eligible populations of men, all of whom will have selected brachytherapy as their treatment of choice for their prostate cancer. Either they have an enlarged prostate that requires size reduction to render brachytherapy technically feasible, or they require androgen ablation in conjunction with brachytherapy for optimal tumor control. The hypothesis is that Degarelix will provide > 30% volume reduction by 3 months in > 30% of men.

The aim of this study is to investigate the predictive value of the presence or absence of cardiac activity by bedside ultrasound during cardiac arrest. The investigators anticipate based on previous research that patients who suffer a cardiac arrest and have cardiac activity on bedside ultrasound will have a greater chance of surviving to hospital admission. The investigators hypothesis is that the mortality rate in patients in cardiac arrest with no cardiac activity by ultrasound will have a mortality rate of 100%.

Reduced quality of life, fatigue, and loss of physical function are common in patients getting chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). The investigators completed a pilot study showing that exercise during active chemotherapy for AML is feasible, safe, and may improve symptoms and physical function. The investigators now propose to compare our hospital-based supervised exercise program to usual care to see if exercise can improve symptoms, physical function, and improve treatment tolerability.

Fructose Consumption and Metabolic Dysregulation

High fructose intake is increasingly recognized as causative in development of prediabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The mechanisms underlying fructose-induced metabolic disturbances are unclear but are beginning to be unraveled. In contrast to metabolism of glucose, the breakdown of fructose leads to the generation of metabolites that stimulate hepatic de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and increased levels of both fasting and postprandial triglycerides. The key lipogenic transcription factor seems to be activated by fructose independently of insulin. However, it is still controversial whether fructose consumption increases DNL in man to the extent that it induces metabolic disturbances. Animal studies have shown that also the adipose tissue is responsive to fructose feeding fructose, and that high fructose-feeding induces insulin resistance and inflammation in the adipose tissue. The role of intestinal insulin resistance in fructose-induced dysmetabolism has not been studied in detail. The critical question is whether the metabolic disturbances are induced by calorie excess or by fructose per se.
