HELIOS-A: A Study of Vutrisiran (ALN-TTRSC02) in Patients With Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloidosis (hATTR Amyloidosis)

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of vutrisiran (ALN-TTRSC02) in participants with hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR amyloidosis). Participants will receive vutrisiran subcutaneous (SC) injection once every 3 months (q3M) or the reference comparator patisiran intravenous (IV) injection once every 3 weeks (q3w) during the 18 month Treatment Period. This study will use the placebo arm of the APOLLO study (NCT01960348) as an external comparator for the primary and most other efficacy endpoints during the 18 Month Treatment Period. Following the 18 Month Treatment Period, all participants will be randomized to receive vutrisiran SC injection once every 6 months (q6M) or q3M in the Randomized Treatment Extension (RTE) Period.

The Jintronix Interactive System for Upper Extremity Rehabilitation Training Post Stroke

Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.Hemiplegia, weakness of one side of the body, is a common consequence of stroke that can lead to significant functional impairments. Loss of arm function occurs in up to 85% of stroke survivors. The impact of arm-related limitations on activities of daily living, leisure activities or work is significant as the arm plays a central role in a person's life from the ability to perform basic activities of daily life to carrying out family and social roles. Guidelines indicate that rehabilitation can improve upper extremity (UE) motor control and functional status post stroke. Virtual reality (VR) and computer games are recent technologies that, as they become more accessible and affordable,are increasingly being used in rehabilitation to allow patients to engage in repetitive practice of specific tasks. A number of published reviews and meta-analyses have examined the use of VR and video games for post-stroke rehabilitation, focusing on or including UE rehabilitation. The authors agree that there is limited but promising findings that VR and video-games, when combined with traditional rehabilitation, have a positive impact on recovery post-stroke.

Optimizing a Home-based Virtual Reality Exercise Program for Chronic Stroke Patients: A Telerehabilitation Approach

Stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability worldwide and its incidence is on the rise. Importantly, loss of arm function occurs in up to 85% of stroke survivors, with a significant long-term impact on activities of daily living, leisure activities and work. The capacity for recovery following a stroke depends on several factors, including the extent of the initial neurological damage, spontaneous recovery and rehabilitation, with possible recovery even years after the stroke. Unfortunately, accessibility of much needed rehabilitation services poststroke often remains limited, both in terms of intensity and duration, as reported in a recent report on post-stroke rehabilitation services in Quebec. Recent evidence suggests that homebased telerehabilitation (TR) is a viable approach for upper limb training post-stroke when rehabilitation services are not available. Similarly, the Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care update for 2013 recommends home-based patient monitoring be used when frequent monitoring is needed and face-to-face visits are not available. Hence, the investigators have developed and propose to examine the use of the VirTele system for people who have suffered a stroke who are no longer receiving rehabilitation services The VirTele system allows upper limb rehabilitation using exergames with ongoing off-line monitoring combined with online monitoring and coaching based on the self-determination theory.

Music Intervention on Palliative Patients

Palliative/hospice care patients experience many negative symptoms during their time in such facilities. These symptoms include, but are usually not limited to, pain, anxiety, depression, and so on. This study is interested in exploring how a music intervention can be used to reduce these symptoms in order to improve the quality of life for these patients. Specifically, because music interventions can be costly (e.g., employing music therapists and the likes of) and there is a lack of knowledge about how to properly implement music interventions, we believe that it would be most cost-effective as well as effective in reducing the described symptoms by introducing pre-recorded music as an intervention. Patients will be given pre-recorded music which requires less training and less money but may be just as effective as music interventions that do not use pre-recorded music. Patients will be evaluated by administering surveys at predetermined times to measure their symptoms, and interview-like questions will be administered at the end of the study to collect information that will be used to inform a larger study in the future. This study will, therefore, be collecting data on both how effective the intervention is and how feasible it is to use the same methods for a similar larger study in the future.

Evaluation of Food Additive Contributions to Obesity - Feasibility Study 2

The effects of food additives on body weight in humans are largely unknown. This is a before-and-after feasibility study in 5 obese adults who will be followed for 5 months. Eligible participants with meet with the study team and will be taught how to limit the exposure to the studied food additives in their diet. Participants will also be asked to limit eating out to a maximum of 2 days per week. Primary outcomes in this study are recruitment rate, retention rate and adherence to the proposed dietary intervention.
