There are about 6915 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Austria. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
The first results of Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) therapy were very promising and superior to established therapies. Three different substances (all of them applied intravitreally) are available, but comparative studies have not yet been conducted. In this pilot study, the safety (number of adverse events) and efficacy (distance acuity testing retinal thickness measurement) of Avastin and Macugen applied as monotherapy will be compared to a combined treatment of Avastin followed by Macugen used for retreatment. At least equal results of the combined therapy are expected.
The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-contact, non invasive method to examine the retina by providing cross-sectional scans through the retina. Measurements of the retinal thickness based on automatically set border lines created by threshold algorithm provide information concerning the amount of intraretinal fluid and activity of the lesion. In this study the reproducibility of retinal thickness measurements in patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration performed by two independent examiners of two examinations of the same day but performed in a time interval of at least two hours should be evaluated. Using the macular thickness program of stratus OCT, 6 radial lines through the center of the foveal avascular zone are performed, Differences between the first and second measurement will be investigated by a 95% confidence interval, a Bland-Altman plot (with corresponding regression analysis) and a random effect model with time, examiner and diagnosis as fixed factors. Although threshold algorithm failures and fixation problems are common in age-related macular degeneration evidence of reproducibility and repeatability of maximum retinal thickness is expected.
Choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) in age-related macular degeneration is one of the major causes of blindness in the western world. It is already known that the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a major role in the development of CNV. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), subretinal surgery, and intravitreal injection of VEGF- inhibitors are the common treatments. These methods are either very invasive or need to be repeated several times over long periods of time in order show some effect. Furthermore PDT can only be performed in eyes with pigment epithelium detachments (PED) of maximum 50% of the avascular zone, while intravitreal injections can lead to endophthalmitis and acute glaucoma. A systemic treatment, which would only need to be administered 3 times within 6 weeks would be a major effort in macular degeneration therapy.
The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate that treatment with a free combination of tiotropium and salmeterol provides superior improvement in static lung volumes and exercise tolerance compared to a fixed combination of fluticasone and salmeterol in patients with COPD. The secondary objective includes assessment of safety.
The purpose of this Phase II follow-up study (to study 810501) is to assess the immunogenicity and safety of a booster vaccination with a non-adjuvanted H5N1 influenza vaccine administered 12 to 17 months after a two-dose regimen of different doses of an adjuvanted or non-adjuvanted H5N1 influenza vaccine in a healthy young adult population. A data safety monitoring board will review the safety data after the booster vaccination. The H5N1 influenza antibody persistence 180 days after the booster vaccination will also be assessed.
Hypothesis: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in critically ill patients may be prevented by continuous lateral rotation therapy (CLRT) using specially designed, motor driven beds. Patients are randomized to CLRT or supine position if mechanically ventilated and not suffering from pneumonia or ARDS within 48 hours after intubation. Prophylaxis of VAP is standardized in both groups. Primary endpoint is incidence of VAP, secondary endpoints are length of ventilation, length of stay and mortality.
The main objective of the trial is to compare Invasive Disease-Free Survival (IDFS) of patients randomised to treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy alone or to adjuvant chemotherapy with 1 year of bevacizumab. The secondary objectives of this trial are to: - compare Overall Survival (OS), Breast Cancer-Free Interval (BCFI), Disease- Free Survival (DFS) and Distant Disease-Free Survival (DDFS) of patients randomised to treatment with adjuvant chemotherapy alone or to adjuvant chemotherapy in combination with 1 year of bevacizumab - evaluate the safety and tolerability of bevacizumab An exploratory sub-study (not reported here) was to identify biomarkers (from tumour or serum) predictive of toxicity and for the level of benefit from the addition of bevacizumab to standard adjuvant systemic treatment.
The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy, safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (the study of the way a drug enters and leaves the blood and tissues over time), and pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic relationships of telaprevir administered in two different doses in combination with two standard therapies commercially available for chronic (lasting a long time) genotype 1 Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) C virus (HCV) infection.
The purpose of the Secura clinical study is to evaluate the overall system safety and clinical performance of the Secura DR Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
The randomized patients with acute heart failure will be stratified based on the presence or absence of a Swan-Ganz catheter and assigned to receive either tezosentan 5 mg/h for the first 30 minutes and 1 mg/h thereafter or matching placebo in a 1:1 manner. The duration of the treatment is 24 hours up to 72 hours. The duration of the follow-up period is 30 days after treatment initiation for death, re-hospitalizations and SAEs followed by a follow-up period of 5 months for vital status.
