Filter by:The purpose of the present study is to determine whether ulinastatin, urinary anti-trypsin inhibitor, attenuates cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)-activated systemic inflammatory response in cardiac surgery with CPB. Serial measurements and analysis of several inflammatory cytokines (bactericidal permeability increasing protein, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α)as well as markers of cardiac injury, renal impairment and oxygenation profile will be performed to determine ulinastatin's efficacy.
This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study will evaluate the potential of dalcetrapib to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD), with CHD risk equivalents or at elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. Eligible patients will be randomized to receive either dalcetrapib 600 mg orally daily or placebo orally daily, on a background of contemporary, guidelines-based medical care. Anticipated time on study treatment is 4 years.
This study examined the effect of a 5-day HFD supplemented with specific fatty acids on gastrointestinal transit, appetite, food intake and substrate utilization. Another novel aspect of this chapter was examining whether a subsequent 5-day period was sufficient to reverse the effects of high-fat feeding on the aforementioned parameters.
The purpose of the study is to determine whether administration of 150 mg clopidogrel is effective in reducing the one-year incidence of thromboischemic events in patients with high on-clopidogrel platelet reactivity compared to 75 mg clopidogrel in the patient population overweight or obese with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 27 kg.m-2.
Background and rationale: In clinical practice, antihypertensives are generally prescribed for use in the morning, whereas some statins are recommended for use in the evening. There is evidence that the reduction in LDL cholesterol achieved with some statins is superior when taken in the night, but it is unclear whether the additional reduction in LDL cholesterol(and the reported improvement in BP control when aspirin is taken in the evening) is offset by a reduction in adherence when taking medication in the evening. Current product labelling recommends night use for simvastatin and does not state a timing preference for aspirin or blood pressure lowering medicines. There is therefore uncertainty concerning the best timing of administration of the polypill. This uncertainty will be addressed by this trial. Trial design: Randomised, open label cross over trial (n=75) of the polypill in the morning compared with the evening administration compared with individual agent administration (acetylsalicylic acid and blood pressure lowering agents in the morning, and statin in the evening) in individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease. Patients will be recruited to the RHP 2c (acetylsalicylic acid 75mg, simvastatin 40mg, lisinopril 10mg, hydrochlorthiazide 12.5mg), and will be randomly allocated to the sequence of time of administration.
The goal of this study is to develop, pilot test, and evaluate a highly simplified but guideline-based program for cardiovascular management for application in resource-scarce settings. The study aims to assess the effects of implementing a simple low-cost cardiovascular management program for high-risk individuals, delivered by primary care providers (PCPs) or community health workers (CHWs), on the proportion of patients appropriately treated with diuretics as well as a number of secondary outcomes in resource-scarce Tibet, China and Haryana India.
The primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of the consensus public health recommended level of physical activity [moderate physical activity (MOD-PA) = 150 min/wk] versus a higher dose of physical activity [high physical activity (HIGH-PA) = 250 min/wk] in the context of a comprehensive behavioral weight loss program that a includes a reduction in energy intake measures of cardiovascular function using cardiac MRI and biomarkers of vascular disease risk. Each of these exercise doses will be compared independently to a Diet Only group intervention on the proposed primary and secondary outcomes, with MOD-PA also compared to HIGH-PA. This study involves the recruitment of 390 overweight and obese adults who will be randomly assigned to one of the above conditions (Diet Only, MOD-PA, HIGH-PA) for a period of 12 months. The primary outcome is LVM measured by cardiac MRI. Secondary outcomes include additional cardiac MRI measures (aortic pulse wave velocity, end diastolic volume, aortic distensibility), inflammatory markers (CRP and TNFα) and selected adipocytokines (adiponectin) as biomarkers of risk related to vascular outcomes, body weight, body composition, and cardiorespiratory fitness, and traditional CVD risk factors (lipids, glucose, insulin, blood pressure). Additional secondary analyses will allow for examination of the effects of physical activity independent of weight change on the primary and secondary outcomes.
ASCOT-10 is a follow-up study of surviving participants in the United Kingdom (UK)arm of the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial (ASCOT) which was conducted between 2000 and 2005.ASCOT's results showed substantial cardiovascular benefit from: 1) the use of a cholesterol lowering drug (atorvastatin) compared to placebo, and 2) the use of a blood-pressure lowering strategy based on amlodipine when compared to a strategy based on atenolol. ASCOT-10 will test the hypothesis that the ASCOT subjects who originally received Atorvastatin and those who received amlodipine based treatment will continue to show a cardiovascular benefit relative to those who did not, even though all the subjects have had access to optimal treatment in the interim.

AMR101 (icosapent ethyl [ethyl-EPA]) is a highly purified ethyl ester of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) developed by Amarin Pharma Inc. for the treatment of cardiovascular disease in statin-treated patients with hypertriglyceridemia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether this drug, combined with a statin therapy, will be superior to the statin therapy alone, when used as a prevention in reducing long-term cardiovascular events in high-risk patients with mixed dyslipidemia.
