Community Cancer Centers Pilot Patient Survey

Background: - Studies suggest that cancer patients diagnosed and treated in a facility with multi-specialty care and clinical research may live longer and have a better quality of life than patients treated elsewhere. - The NCI Community Cancer Centers Pilot Program (NCCCP) is a 3-year program to test the concept of a national network of community cancer centers to expand cancer research and deliver the most advanced cancer care to Americans in their own communities. - The pilot program includes a survey of cancer patients receiving care at the pilot sites. Objectives: - To gain an understanding of the experiences of adult patients who receive services at the NCCCP pilot sites and assess if and how their experience changes over the study period. Data about the following are collected: - Patients information needs and awareness of the NCCCP program - Clinical trials experience - Access to health care - Perspectives on patient-provider communication - Experiences with patient navigation, self-management, medical decision-making and survivorship - Satisfaction with care and quality of life Eligibility: - Patients 21 years or older at the time of diagnosis - Treatment at the cancer center for at least 3 months since July 1, 2007 Design: - Participants complete a 25-minute questionnaire covering the care they received at their cancer center, their experience with making medical appointments and how long they waited to see the doctor. The survey includes information on the following: - Services at the cancer center - Getting needed care - Assistance for patients and their families - Communication with the cancer care team - Clinical trials - Care after finishing treatment - Evaluation of care - Health and medical history - Background information (demographics)

Study of IMC-1121B in Patients With Advanced Solid Tumors Not Responding To Standard Therapy

We are conducting a research study for tumors that have not responded to prior treatment. The subject will receive an investigational drug called IMC-1121B. ImClone LLC, the maker of IMC-1121B, is running this research study. We believe that IMC-1121B blocks the growth factors made by the cancer cells, so new blood vessels do not grow. It is believed that without the new blood vessels, the cancer or tumor will not get the oxygen and food that it needs to grow. This may stop the cancer from growing or spreading and the tumor cells may die. Since normal blood vessels have already formed in adults, it might be possible to stop tumor growth without harming normal cells.

Improvement of Self Management for Oncologic Patients With Pain

This study will test the SCION (Self care improvement through oncology nursing)-PAIN program, a multi-modular structured intervention to improve self management in oncologic patients with pain compared to care as usual (standard pain treatment and standard care). The study will determine if the self management skills of the patients continue to be used when the intervention stops, e.g. after discharge from hospital. It is hypothesized that patients who receive the multi-modular structured intervention will have less patient-related barriers to the management of cancer pain.

Safety Study of XL765 (SAR245409) in Combination With Erlotinib in Adults With Solid Tumors

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of XL765 in combination with erlotinib (Tarceva®) in subjects with solid tumors. XL765 is a new chemical entity that inhibits the kinases PI3K and mTOR. In preclinical studies, inactivation of PI3K has been shown to inhibit growth and induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in tumor cells, whereas inactivation of mTOR has been shown to inhibit the growth of tumor cells. Erlotinib is an orally administered inhibitor of EGFR (also known as HER1) tyrosine kinase. It was approved by the FDA as a single agent for the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after failure of at least one prior chemotherapy regimen and in combination with gemcitabine for first line treatment of patients with locally advanced, unresectable or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Reactions to Disease Risk Information

This study is part of an effort to learn about interactions between doctors and patients. The study will use virtual reality technology to examine how patients and doctors interact when they discuss disease risks. Men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 who have access to the Internet and were born and raised in the United States may be eligible for this study. Participants will be recruited from the Washington D.C. area. Participants undergo the following procedures: - Complete an online questionnaire about their health-related background, family health history, cancer risk perceptions, and demographic information (e.g., age, marital status, education, etc.). - Participate in activities in a virtual reality environment in which they interact with a virtual doctor in a virtual clinical scenario. For this experiment, participants wear a head-mounted display that allows them to see the virtual world images. - Fill out a second questionnaire after completing the virtual reality activities. This questionnaire includes information on the participants virtual reality experience, the information provided in the experience, and questions about themselves and their background.

A Multicenter Phase I Clinical Study of a New Compound P1446A-05 in Patients With Advanced Refractory Malignancies

This is a phase I study of a novel compound P1446A-05. Aim of this study is to identify the the recommended phase II dose of the drug and to determine the nature of adverse effects associated with the drug. P1446A-05 capsules will be given continuously (28 days in each 28 day cycle) to patients suffering from advanced malignancies with no effective treatment available. The dose of the study agent will be lower i.e. 75 mg per day for initial patients. If this dose is found safe, higher dose will be administered to next set of (three to six) patients. This will continued till the safest and best dose is identified. Treatment will be given for 4 cycles and continued further if found effective. Dose schedule may be modified to introduce treatment holiday,if frequent adverse effects are seen on continuous administration.

Airway Reactivity in Children Before and After BMT Bone Marrow Transplantation

Background: Stem cell transplantation (SCT) is associated with pulmonary complications and may lead to high morbidity and mortality. We encountered several children post-SCT with a clinical picture suggestive of airway hyper-reactivity (AHR) and evidence of reversible airway obstruction that was not reported pre-transplant. Our aim was to determine if SCT induced AHR as assessed by methacholine challenge test (MCT) and to determine any correlation between AHR and pulmonary complications. Methods: Prospective study evaluating consecutive patients referred for SCT to the Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology at Meyer Children's Hospital. Evaluation included pulmonary function test and methacholine challenge test before and after the transplantation, and assessment of pulmonary complications.

AMG386 Comb w. Either Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin or Topotecan Subjects w. Advanced Recurrent Epithelial Ovarian CR

This study is a 2 part, 2 cohort, open-label, dose escalation/de escalation study of AMG 386 in combination with either pegylated liposomal doxorubicin or topotecan in subjects with recurrent ovarian cancer. Up to 100 subjects will be enrolled to receive AMG 386 in combination with either pegylated liposomal doxorubicin every 4 weeks (cohort A) or topotecan weekly on days 1, 8, and 15 of a 28 day dosing schedule (cohort B). Subject enrollment and assignment to either cohort will be based on eligibility and the investigator's discretion. It is hypothesized that AMG 386, in combination with each of the chemotherapy regimens: either pegylated liposomal doxorubicin or topotecan will be safe and well tolerated in subjects with recurrent ovarian cancer.
