Iron deficiency anemia is a common complication in patients who underwent gastrectomy and leads to a deterioration in patient's quality of life. Therefore iron supplementation is one of the important treatments in postgastrectomy patients. Taking an oral iron is an option for iron supplementation, but the postgastrectomy patients has poor absorption of iron due to their anatomic change. Accordingly, intravenous iron supplementation has been emerged as another treatment option, but there are only a few studies to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous iron supplementation compared with oral iron in patients underwent gastrectomy. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the iron supplementation method as intravenous injection of iron isomaltoside compared with oral iron in the treatment of postgastrectomy anemia. Gastric cancer patients who underwent curative gastrectomy more than 1 year ago and hemoglobin level lower than 11 g/dL will be included in this trial. After the registration, the patients will be randomly assigned to intravenous iron (n = 179) or oral iron groups (n = 179). Calculated dose of iron isomaltoside using Ganzoni formula will be injected intravenously in intravenous iron group and 160 mg/day of ferrous sulfate for 12 weeks will be taken in oral iron group. Hemoglobin and iron profiles at baseline and weeks 2, 4, 8, and 12 and quality of life score at baseline and weeks 12 period will be evaluated.
Subjects are recruited from the attendees of the multidisciplinary low back pain rehabilitation group before it takes place in University Hospital of Oulu at Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) unit. Subjects were invited to participate by letter 2 weeks before the beginning of the rehabilitation. Subjects to rehabilitation are picked by doctor at PRM unit. The volunteered subjects are invited to the briefing of the study and those who are willing to participate, they filled in several questionnaires about pain, participation, disability and mood. After that the subjects are measured at baseline measurement. Subjects are randomized into the five groups. After the 3 months treatment and training the follow-up measurements are performed. Same questionnaires are filled in at that point as well. At 6 and 12 months the follow-up questionnaires (same as before) are sent to subjects.
Data and specimens will be collected longitudinally from patients seen in the UVA Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) clinic in order to describe the phenotypic expression of various interstitial lung diseases. Samples will also be collected from a control group for comparison purposes. All data will be entered into a repository for future research purposes or screening for new studies that become available. This data will help identify trends and hopefully lead to a better understanding of the disease progression, treatment options, and outcomes.
This phase II trial studies how well estradiol works in treating patients with estrogen receptor beta (ER beta) positive, triple negative breast cancer that has spread to nearby tissue or lymph nodes (locally advanced) or other places in the body (metastatic). Hormone receptors like ER beta allow the body to respond appropriately to hormones. Triple negative means that the breast cancer does not express other hormone receptors called ER alpha, progesterone, and HER2. In some people with triple negative breast cancer, ER beta is overexpressed. Tumor cells that overexpress ER beta grow slower in the laboratory and this growth is slowed in the presence of estrogen. Estradiol is a form of estrogen. This study may help doctors determine whether tumor cells that overexpress ER beta shrink in the presence of estradiol.
The purpose of this post-market clinical follow-up (PMCF) study is to describe the long-term safety and performance of AcrySof Single-Piece and AcrySof Multi-Piece monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).
The incidence of placenta accreta spectrum disorders has shown an increasing trend worldwide due to the increase of cesarean section rate. Research on the outcomes of placenta accreta spectrum disorders primarily relies on retrospective analysis. The aim of this study was to establish a prospective, multicenter cohort in China in order to conduct further investigations on the clinical features, predictive capabilities, diagnostic methods, and pathogenesis of placenta accreta spectrum disorders.
Sleep plays a fundamental role in both mental- and physical-health, with good sleep health including adequate duration and quality, appropriate timing, regularity, and absence of sleep disorders. The purpose of this study is to evaluate sleep in adolescent and if brief behavioral and sleep hygiene education with mindfulness intervention improves, sleep timing, sleep duration, sleep quality, anxiety- and depression symptoms. During adolescence extensive physiological changes happen that make it easier for adolescents to stay up later, that may increase the time it may take them to fall-asleep and developing insomnia symptoms. At the same time psychosocial changes happen, the societal changes in the last decade may even have further amplified late sleep in adolescents, with increase in social media use and evening screen-time. As sleep need is not decreased and with adolescents having to wake up at "socially acceptable times" rather than the endogenous sleep offset time, sleep duration may be shortened causing chronic sleep loss and daytime sleepiness. Insufficient sleep in adolescents may affect their daytime functioning, causing fatigue and memory issues, affect school attendance and academic performance, affect mood, mental- and physical health, cause behavioral dysfunction and has been associated with worse health outcomes, adverse risk behaviors and even increase risk for accidents. This study should advance understanding of sleep in adolescents and if this simple interventions can be effective in improving their sleep and mental health.
Rapid Whole Genome Sequencing (rWGS) has proven to provide much faster diagnoses than traditional clinical testing, including clinical Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) and standard Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). This collaborative study seeks to provide rWGS as a research test to additional pediatric hospitals nationwide to assist in the rapid diagnosis of acutely ill children suspected of a genetic condition. The study will examine diagnosis rates, changes in clinical care as a result of a genetic diagnosis, and health economics including potential cost-effectiveness of rWGS. This study will also serve as a biorepository for future research on samples and data generated from genomic sequencing.
This study will enroll participants with idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD), for the purpose of preparing for a clinical trial of neuroprotective treatments against synucleinopathies.
Biomarkers can be evaluated to provide information about disease presence or intensity and treatment efficacy. By recording these biomarkers through noninvasive clinical techniques, it is possible to gain information about the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which involuntarily regulates and adapts organ systems in the body. Machine learning and signal processing methods have made it possible to quantify the behavior of the ANS by statistically analyzing recorded signals. This work will aim to systematically measure ANS function by multiple modalities and use decoding algorithms to derive an index that reflects overall ANS function and/or balance in healthy able-bodied individuals. Additionally, this study will determine how transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a noninvasive method of stimulating the vagus nerve without surgery, affects the ANS function. Data from this research will enable the possibility of detecting early and significant changes in ANS from "normal" homeostasis to diagnose disease onset and assess severity to improve treatment protocols.
