This randomized phase II trial studies how well photodynamic therapy with HPPH works in treating patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. Photodynamic therapy uses HPPH that becomes active when it is exposed to a certain kind of light. When the drug is active, cancer cells are killed. This may be effective against squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.

This study will explore effectiveness of three doses of fentanyl sublingual spray against an active comparator in emergency department (ED) patients with acute pain. After screening, eligible participants will participate in a treatment period (up to 2 hours) and a post-treatment evaluation period (up to 4 hours or discharge from the ED). Open-label standard of care rescue medication for pain can be given at any time during the study period, based on clinical judgment of the treating physician. Adverse events will be collected for five days after initial enrollment.

Vemurafenib Combined With Whole Brain Radiation Therapy or Radiosurgery in Patients With BRAF Mutation-Positive Melanoma and Brain Metastases

This phase I trial studies the best dose of vemurafenib when combined with whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) or stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in patients with v-raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B (BRAF) mutation-positive melanoma and brain metastases. Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for patients with brain metastases. Patients with multiple metastases are typically treated with WBRT. For patients with a few metastases, SRS alone can be used. Vemurafenib may stop the growth of tumor cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Combining radiation treatment with vemurafenib for melanoma patients with brain metastases may result in improved local control and prolonged survival.
