Hypoglycemia Associated Autonomic Failure in Type 1 DM, Q5

When a patient with Type 1 diabetes exercises, he or she is more prone to low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. It is known that antecedent exercise can blunt defense responses, called counterregulatory responses to subsequent hypoglycemia in Type 1 DM, causing him or her to be vulnerable to another bout of hypoglycemia. Epinephrine is one of the important hormones in the defense of blood glucose during both exercise and hypoglycemia. We will test the hypothesis that antecedent exercise will blunt the metabolic, neuroendocrine and cardiovascular effects of subsequent epinephrine infusion in Type 1 DM.

Anemia of inflammation is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Patients with CKD and anemia of inflammation also exhibit decreased response to erythropoietic agents, even in the presence of adequate iron stores. This decreased responsiveness is associated with increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Rilonacept is being developed for the treatment of inflammatory disorders. This is a clinical research study to determine the safety and effectiveness of rilonacept for the treatment of anemia in inflamed patients with CKD who are not yet on dialysis.

Safety and Efficacy of Cethrin® in Adult Subjects With Acute Cervical Spinal Cord Injury

This is a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase IIb study to be conducted in North America and Europe and will include male and female subjects with acute cervical SCI, 18 to 62 years of age, who receive clinical trial material (CTM) within 72 hours of injury. This study is being undertaken to evaluate and confirm the safety and efficacy of CETHRIN®. This adaptive study has been designed to efficiently identify the safest and most effective dose in Phase IIb which will be evaluated in a future Phase III study. Given the current lack of effective treatments for SCI, an improvement in motor ability or activities of daily living in these subjects would be a great advancement in the treatment of SCI.

The therapeutic DNA vaccine, DermaVir, represents an immunization strategy that targets lymph node dendritic cells. Because of the high percentage of naive CD4 cells in children and adolescents, the potential for effective new HIV-specific CD4 cell responses may be more achievable in children than in adults. The primary purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and tolerability of DermaVir in children and young adults.

In this study the bio-equivalence will be investigated in healthy Thai volunteers, to see whether the generic GPO saquinavir shows bioequivalence when boosted with Norvir®. If the generic formulation is bioequivalent subsequent studies may follow in HIV-1 positive patients.
