Fraxel Laser for Alopecia

This is a pilot study to evaluate the effect of the 1550 nm fractional erbium-glass laser in patients with nonscarring alopecias. Participants currently living in the Chicago metropolitan area and meet inclusion/exclusion criteria will be considered for enrollment. Participants will receive 5 sessions of laser, 30 days apart, to the area of alopecia on the scalp. Follow-up is at 150 days. This study was a pilot study designed to determine feasibility of this procedure.

Botox for Gummy Smile

This is a two part study to measure and observe the efficacy of botulinum toxin A for the treatment of gummy smiles. Part A will randomly compare three different doses of botulinum toxin type A (abobotulinumtoxin A) for the treatment of upper anterior gummy smile with larger gingival exposure (> 4 mm). Part B will assign one of two doses of botulinum toxin type A for participants with smaller gingival exposure (< 4 mm). Follow-up visits with photography will occur 4 and 12 weeks after their treatment. Subjects currently living in the Chicago metropolitan area and meet inclusion/exclusion criteria will be considered for enrollment. This study is a pilot study designed to determine feasibility of this procedure.

Effect of Resveratrol on Serum IGF2 Among African American Women

African American (AA) women with breast cancer (BC) have higher mortality and are associated with worse outcomes when treated with available adjuvant treatments. Addressing this survival disparity will depend on identifying contributing biologic factors that can be translated into new treatments. Preclinical studies have shown that Insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II)expression was significantly higher in AA cell lines and tissue samples when compared to Caucasians indicating that IGF-II is an important biologic factor contributing to higher breast cancer mortality in AA women and is also responsible for chemoresistance in BC cells. In addition preclinical studies also demonstrated that resveratrol (RSV) inhibits IGF-II and induces apoptosis in BC cell lines. Researchers want to test IGF-II levels at baseline in healthy African American women and monitor levels while on resveratrol therapy for 6 weeks.

Gas Exchange Kinetics and Work Load During Exercise

The purpose of this research study is to understand how different kinds of exercise affect the human body and the health of the heart and lungs. For example, some people like to exercise continuously for relatively long periods of time while others like to exercise for short periods of time with rest periods in between. Children tend to exercise in frequent bouts of brief exercise interspersed with periods of rest. Also, some people like running or treadmill exercise while others like to work out on stationary bicycles. To date, standard exercise testing is based on a century-old paradigm used predominantly for adults that involves maximal exercise protocols (cardiopulmonary exercise testing-CPET). Moreover, different but widely used exercise modalities such as cycle ergometer and treadmills are currently impossible to compare in children, and this has limited the clinical and research application of such testing in the pediatric age-range. A major premise of this laboratory is that laboratory testing of cardiopulmonary fitness in children should be based on protocols that mimic naturally occurring patterns of exercise in children, rather than those that have been artificially employed to assess maximal efforts in adults. This research project designed to begin the process of systematically identifying protocols can be best used for children and young adults. Participants will exercise in different protocols on a bicycle ergometer or treadmill. This research could lead to improved and more accurate fitness assessment and pave the way to an improved personalized exercise program in health and illness.

PET-MRI for Functional Imaging of the Testis: A Feasibility Study

The primary objective of this study is to explore feasibility of testis functionality assessment and testis imaging obtained from Positron Emissions Tomography (PET) /Magnetic Resonance Imagine (MRI). Using advanced MRI metrics, investigators will study the three-dimensional structure of normal testis, the levels of specific elements and compounds in the tissues (which can only be found via these imaging techniques), and the directionality (and alterations in directionality) of tissue structure. Investigators hope to develop hypothesis that will in turn suggest bio-markers to be explored in subsequent clinical trials.

Based on in vitro studies identifying changes in food structures potential to delay digestion as well as results from animal studies showing potential of these foods to decrease appetite, nano-particulated whey protein and high molecular weight whey protein-alginate coacervates were chosen to be investigated in humans. Thereby, the aim of this short-term study is to investigate if nano-particulated whey protein has appetite reducing effects in humans compared to non-particulated whey protein (Part 1) as well as if high molecular weight whey protein-alginate coacervates have appetite reducing effects in humans compared to calcium alginate (Part 2).
