Trial to Promote Recovery From COVID-19 With Endocrine Therapy

Betadine Effect on Nasal Mucosa Cilia

The goal of the proposed study is to identify PVP-I at 1.25% as an appropriate intranasal topical preparation for patients undergoing rhinoplasty with no effect on the nasal mucosa cilia (NMC) or olfaction using the saccharin transit time (STT) test as a method for evaluating NMC function. PVP-I has been shown to be viricidal in the upper aerodigestive tract. This study is highly-relevant, as protection for individuals with a high risk of exposure to respiratory pathogens has become increasingly important in the setting of recent viral epidemics such as SARS-CoV-2. Septorhinoplasty is commonly performed throughout the world and there is a paucity of standardized testing in surgical facilities. Much of our understanding of the current COVID-19 pandemic is extrapolated from MERS and SARS data. It is our hope that this study's relevance for the current pandemic remains so in the unfortunate event of another pandemic in the future.

The purpose of this research study is to find out about how looking at different types of pictures can affect people's attention spans. Attention Restoration Theory (ART) suggests that there are two types of attention. One type (directed attention) can become tired and cause people to make mistakes. The other type (involuntary attention) gives directed attention a chance to rest, so people make less mistakes. Certain types of pictures are good at capturing involuntary attention. We think that capturing involuntary attention will help emergency physicians make less mistakes on tests of attention. This study will allow us to learn more about it.

This proposed study aims to evaluate the efficacy of a daily oral cannabinoid oil preparation in treating symptoms of DSM-5 anxiety disorders, using a two-arm, 8-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial in adults aged 21-65 years. The study will also evaluate the relationship between inflammation, anxiety and cannabinoids using biological markers as well as examine the neuro-cognitive effects of cannabinoid treatment.

Phasix Mesh Use in Complex Open Ventral Hernias Study

The purpose of this study is to compare clinical and patient centered outcomes of biosynthetic poly-4-hydroybutyrate meshes versus current care (synthetic polypropylene mesh or suture) for complex ventral hernia repair. The primary outcome for this study will be patients who are major complication free at 2 years postoperative. This will be a composite of hernia recurrence, reoperation, chronic wound complication, or death. Secondary outcomes include: surgical site occurences such as surgical site infection, seroma, hematoma and skin dehiscence within 90 days postoperative, emergency room visits withing 90 days postoperative, days in hospital up to 90 days postoperative, abdominal pain, and change in patient centered outcomes measured through the modified activities assessment scale (mAAS).

Edmon is the first Communauté Européenne (CE) marked medical device able to continuously measure propofol in the exhaled breath of patients under sedation or anaesthesia with propofol. Current scientific publications indicate that it makes sense from a pharmacologic point of view to measure propofol in the exhaled air. If the present study can show the Edmon to be able to detect small differences in propofol plasma concentration it will underline the clinical value of measuring propofol in the exhaled breath. This might be an opportunity for a significant improvement in patient monitoring.
