To study the effect of elective pain relief analgesia in labor on mode of delivery.
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV). The major clinical features of SARS include fever, dyspnea, lymphopenia, and a rapid progression of pulmonary infiltrates on chest radiologic images. The SARS-related deaths have resulted mainly from pulmonary complications, including progressive respiratory failure due to alveolar damage and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Pathological changes in SARS suggest that SARS sequelae such as infiltration of PMN in lung tissue, multiple organ dysfunction and ARDS have been associated with cytokines and chemokine dysregulation. Some patients still manifested lung injury at a time when the viral load was falling also supports the immune nature of the lung damage. We therefore undertook an analysis of dynamic production of cytokine/chemokines in SARS patients with an initial normal chest radiograph in order to improve understanding of disease pathogenesis and improve patient management.
The goal of this study is to find out whether the plant compounds present in Hibiscus sabdariffa, a plant commonly used in herbal tea blends and other beverages, will have a beneficial effect on blood pressure in people with mildly elevated blood pressure.
Islet transplantation has been investigated as a treatment for Type 1 diabetes mellitus in selected patients with inadequate glucose control despite insulin therapy. However, the perennial hope that such an approach would result in long-term freedom from the need for exogenous insulin, with stabilization of the secondary complications of diabetes, has failed to materialize in practice. The goal of the present study is therefore to improve the safety and efficacy of clinical islet-alone transplantation by minimizing dependence on calcineurin-inhibitor therapy - thereby avoiding potential nephrotoxicity, and furthermore improving success with single-donor islet infusions by avoiding all diabetogenic immunosuppression. Campath-1H, combined with Infliximab induction therapy provides a unique opportunity to minimize dosing of maintenance long-term immunosuppression while further promoting islet engraftment.
Evaluating the Effectiveness of Different Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) Therapist Training Models
Aim of the study is to investigate the function of the systemic vascular endothelium in individuals susceptible to high-altitude pulmonary oedema during normoxia and normobaric hypoxia.
A study is being conducted by the University of Rochester Cancer Center (URCC) in which patients with liver cancer will be treated with high dose conformal radiation therapy. This type of radiation uses new techniques which aim the radiation to the sites of disease allowing the tumor to receive a high dose and the surrounding normal liver tissue to receive a low enough dose that the normal tissue should remain free from injury. The purpose of the study is to determine if the conformal radiation therapy is safe, tolerable and effective in treating liver cancer and to determine the side effects caused by this treatment. A second objective is to determine if the levels of a special type of protein (called cytokines) found in the blood are related to this treatment.
The purpose of this research is to evaluate an automated, laser-based technique for measuring DNA damge resulting from radiation. We want to use controlled exposure on cancer patients to help develop a measurement to test people who may have been accidentally exposed to radiation.
In this research we propose to develop a comprehensive model to explain how users process persuasive messages. We then propose to experimentally test varying the persuasiveness of message content in various domains, and assess their impact on adherence by both physicians and patients. Finally based on our conceptual model and results from the experimental data we propose to develop preliminary guidelines to assist developers in designing effective messages.
The purpose of the study is to determine whether the investigational drug galantamine-CR (Reminyl- Controlled Release capsule) is useful in improving problems with memory in bipolar patients with stable mood. This study is being done because a large proportion of patients with bipolar disorder experience significant memory problems, even when their mood is stable, after adequate treatment. These memory problems have been associated with poor daily social functioning. Studying galantamine-CR in this population may provide a new clinical way to combat memory problems in stable patients with bipolar disorder.
