Feasibility of methylene blue-based combination therapy in the radical treatment of adult patients with Plasmodium vivax malaria in Ethiopia: a randomised controlled pilot trial Study rationale: Elimination has become the goal of malaria programmes in an increasing number of endemic countries and regions. Primaquine (PQ) is the only registered drug for radical cure of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Prolonged PQ-based combination therapy carries safety concerns and resistance to chloroquine (CQ) and PQ is emerging. Methylene blue (MB) has recently been shown to be safe and effective in the treatment of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in West Africa. As there is evidence for MB probably being effective against the hypnozoites of Plasmodium vivax, MB-based drug regimens could be an alternative to PQ-based combination therapy in Plasmodium vivax malaria. Study objectives: The main objective of this trial is to study the feasibility of MB-based combination therapy in patients with uncomplicated P. vivax malaria in an endemic area of Ethiopia.
The goal of this study is to assess a new non-invasive computerized, multiphase, resting electrocardiogram analysis device in early identification of patients at risk for acute coronary syndrome. The overall objective is to assess the association between the results from a resting MCG and 30-day cardiovascular outcome in patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected coronary disease.
The proposed clinical trial study of rAAVrh74.MCK.GALGT2 for duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients that will involve direct intramuscular injection to the extensor digitorum brevis muscle (EDB).
The study purpose is to characterize the effect of pancreatic enzyme supplementation on chronic pancreatitis type pain.
Prospective, multi-centre, randomized, open-label, parallel comparisons to evaluate - the incidence of bleedings (COSTA-Bleed) and - the incidence of ischemic and bleeding events (COSTA-Outcome) following a therapy with the abluminal sirolimus coated bio-engineered stent (COMBO stent) in association with short-term single antiplatelet therapy as compared to a guidelines-based strategy in patients with coronary artery disease with an indication for chronic oral anticoagulant therapy.
Previous studies attempted to understand the dysphotopsia phenomenon by examining intraocular lens type, anterior capsule depth, iris-to-lens depth, lens refractive material, clear cornea incision wounds and anterior capsulorrhexis. However, there is limited literature in understanding haptic orientation and negative dysphotopsia; postulated theories and anecdotal reports relate to horizontal haptic orientation and the lateralization of rays such that light is received both in smaller width and anterior to the peripheral retina; however, no formal studies currently exist.
This is a single arm pilot study of 64Cu-MM-302 and unlabeled MM-302 in combination with trastuzumab in 10 patients with advanced HER2+ cancer with new or progressive brain metastases. Patients will receive standard imaging at baseline, including FDG-PET/CT plus MR brain imaging. Patients will subsequently start protocol therapy with MM-302 and trastuzumab given on day 1 of an every 21-day dosing cycle, at the recommended phase 2 dose of 30 mg/m2. Patients will receive 64Cu-labeled MM-302 (3-5 mg/m2 doxorubicin) three hours after unlabeled dose of MM-302. Integrated MR/PET imaging of the brain and whole body will be performed at two time points following 64Cu-labeled MM-302 administration: (1) within 3 hours (+/- 1 hour) of labeled drug injection, and (2) 24 hours (+/- 6 hours) post-injection. Patients will continue to receive subsequent doses of unlabeled MM-302 plus trastuzumab every 3 weeks until clinical or radiographic disease progression (either in the brain or systemically) or unacceptable toxicity, whichever occurs soonest. MR brain imaging and FDG-PET/CT scans will be performed every 9 weeks to monitor for treatment response and disease progression.
Background and study aims: Being a caregiver for someone with cancer can be very difficult emotionally. For many the patient is a family member or friend, and so this can cause the caregiver a great deal of psychological distress. There are currently very few studies looking into the effectiveness of psychological treatments for distressed caregivers of cancer patients. This study is looking at tailored group therapy program for carers of cancer givers. The aim of this study is to find out whether this program can help to lower levels of distress in cancer caregivers and help them to better cope with caring for someone with the illness.
Study design: At baseline, all adolescents and young adults with IBD ages 12-21 years will be screened for anxiety and depression symptoms using the PHQ-9 and the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED) during a routine medical visit in the pediatric gastroenterology clinic. Individuals who screen positive for depression or anxiety will be assessed to confirm diagnoses using the anxiety and M.I.N.I. 6.0. Participants will also complete a psychosocial risk assessment as well as medical and socio-demographic inventories. The investigators will include youth that meet full criteria for major depressive disorder and any anxiety disorder, dysthymic disorder, and any adjustment disorder. The investigators will also include patients with subclinical symptoms that have significant psychosocial stressors in addition to their medical illness. Patients will be excluded if they have active suicidal ideation with plan requiring ER referral, bipolar disorder, psychosis, substance dependence, eating disorders, or significant intellectual disability/developmental delay. Participants meeting inclusion criteria will be randomly assigned to four sessions of IBBT administered on-site by a Fink social worker or treatment as usual (TAU), which is a facilitated community referral for mental health treatment.
Children with a radionuclide gastric emptying test with abnormal results will undergo a second test with the addition of a weight adjusted dose of monosodium glutamate. The purpose of the study is to determine if a single dose of monosodium glutamate can shorten the gastric emptying time.
