The purpose of this study is to record and analyze the profile and outcome of cataract patients receiving phacoemulsification (phaco) and artificial intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with or without femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) in Indian tertiary medical centers.
Primary Objective: To assess the pharmacodynamic response (PD) of a single subcutaneous (SC) dose of SAR438544 versus recombinant glucagon in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients under induced hypoglycemia. Secondary Objective: To assess the safety and tolerability and pharmacokinetics (PK) of a single SC dose of SAR438544 versus recombinant glucagon in T1DM patients under induced hypoglycemia.
Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy among men in the United States and Canada. Suspicion of prostate cancer with modern screening tests, such as digital rectal exam (DRE) and prostate serum antigen (PSA) require ultrasound-guided biopsy for pathological diagnosis. However, this technique misses cancer in nearly one quarter of patients and finds clinically insignificant disease in another third of patients, resulting in over-treatment and unnecessary morbidity. MRI is the best imaging method for prostate cancer detection, but current techniques cannot reliably predict tumour grade and are often unreliable for localizing cancer, particularly within the transition zone, where specificity is low. The primary objective of this pilot study is to evaluate the added benefit of localizing prostate cancer and predicting tumour grade with Hyperpolarized 13C MRI, in addition to traditional T2-weighted and diffusion-weighted MR imaging. The investigators propose a pilot study, in men diagnosed with prostate cancer awaiting prostatectomy, with the specific goals of comparing pre-operative imaging findings to ground truth histology, using whole-mount prostate specimens. The results of this study will provide insight into the prostate cancer disease signatures with MRI and determine if there is added benefit for incorporation of this new technique into future clinical MRI protocols. If future imaging tests could determine the size, grade and extent of disease, this would open the door for less invasive, localized treatment options with reduced morbidity.
The purpose of this grant is to evaluate the efficacy of sodium butyrate as a novel treatment for cognitive deficits in schizophrenia (SZ). The proposal consists of a small preliminary open label study to assess tolerability and side effects of sodium butyrate in schizophrenic patients receiving antipsychotic treatment, followed by a larger double-blind study of the effects of sodium butyrate on cognitive function and symptoms in SZ patients who are not in an acute exacerbation of the primary symptoms and show continued cognitive deficits. Secondary aims will be to evaluate its effects on improving symptoms and functioning in SZ, and the relationship of the drug's clinical effects to epigenetic and inflammation related biochemical changes.
This is a prospective study that will explore the mechanisms of efficacy of dimethyl fumarate (DMF) treatment in multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigators will enroll relapsing MS patients who are beginning therapy with DMF into a one-year longitudinal study in which blood and spinal fluid analyses, imaging and clinical studies will be performed to identify and measure changes associated with DMF therapy.
Dilation and evacuation (D&E) is a common surgical procedure in the U.S. Adequate pre-operative preparation of the uterine cervix is an important part of preventing complications of the procedure. Traditionally, the uterine cervix is prepared for the procedure using water-attracting dilators, which are placed via a speculum exam and cause discomfort for many women. The objective of this study is to investigate the comparative effectiveness of mifepristone (an oral tablet) versus dilators for cervical preparation for D&E.
The aim of this prospective randomized study is to evaluate the impact of peroperative pupillometry monitoring on per and post-operative opioid consumption in pediatric anesthesia. All patients are anesthetized with sevoflurane and remifentanil. In the intervention group, peroperative remifentanil infusion rate is guided by pupillometry. In the other group, remifentanil infusion rate is guided according to hemodynamic data.
Cleft Lip and Palate surgical repair is one of the most common procedures performed by Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in the World. With this in mind, it is curious that no consensus exists regarding the usage of postoperative antibiotics or the effects this might have on wound complications such as cellulitis, dehiscence, or fistula formation. The surgical bed in cleft lip/palate repair is known to harbor a myriad of pathological organisms, indeed the human bite is one of the more clinically and microbiologically significant injuries to treat. This research study is to elucidate the role, if any, that prophylactic antibiotics have in the prevention of complications post cleft palate (CP) and VPI repair and potentially establish a new paradigm of care.
What affect does the use of a mucoadhesive drug delivery system (Mucolox®) compounded with clonazepam have in the treatment of burning mouth syndrome? There are no clinical trials reported in the literature that evaluate the use of a mucoadhesive vehicle to deliver clonazepam into the oral cavity and treat burning mouth syndrome. The use of a mucoadhesive may help to increase surface contact and elicit a greater reduction in symptoms.
Varicella zoster virus (VZV) can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in transplant recipients. Current recommendations suggest a 4 week waiting period between vaccination and transplantation and consideration of booster immunizations if antibody response does not reach target levels. This four week waiting period can result in delayed transplant, rejection of an optimal organ, or missed opportunity to vaccinate. However, these recommendations are not evidence based. This is a prospective study to look at the immune response to varicella vaccine in children with chronic liver disease. Investigators will evaluate: 1. the time at which VZV DNA becomes undetectable in blood and saliva by PCR after vaccination in children with chronic liver disease and 2. the difference in humoral and cell mediated immune response to varicella immunization between children with chronic liver disease and healthy children.
