Filter by:This 18 week, randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial will examine the effects of thick dietary fibre (PGX) supplementation of a low calorie diet (LCD) on appetite, weight loss, body composition, and compliance in overweight and moderately obese female. The investigators believe that 15 grams/day PGX supplementation of a low calorie diet over a 14-weeks period will elicit a better appetite score (e.g. reduced hunger) compared to the rice flour supplementation of the LCD.

Nephrolithiasis is a disease that strikes roughly 10% of the Italian population and its incidence in industrialized countries is on the increase. The most common form of the disease (80%) is Idiopathic Calcium Nephrolithiasis (ICN) with calcium-oxalate (CaOx) and/or calcium-phosphate (CaP) stones. The etiopathogenesis involves both genetic and acquired factors, the interplay of which leads to urinary biochemical anomalies at the root of stone formation. The elements and urinary compounds involved are known as "urinary stone risk factors". The risk factors for CaOx stones consist of low urine volume, hypercalciuria, hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, hypocitraturia and hypomagnesuria. In the case of CaP stones, the hyperphosphaturia and pH parameters are of particular importance; a pH>7 promotes the formation of stones prevalently composed of phosphates, while a pH of between 6 and 7, associated with a volume <1l/day, can raise CaP supersaturation to a dangerously high level and lead to the formation of mixed CaOx and CaP stones. For uric acid stones, the elements involved are hyperuricosuria and pH<5.5. In general, the most prevalent alteration in ICN is hypercalciuria (50%). Hypertension and obesity are also social diseases with important epidemiological similarities to nephrolithiasis. These affinities have led to the search for a common pathogenic moment. As far as hypertension is concerned, various studies have demonstrated high calciuria in hypertensives with a linear relationship between 24-h calciuria and arterial blood pressure. The incidence of stone disease is greater in hypertensives than in normotensives and, by the same token, the incidence of hypertension is greater in stone formers than in non stone formers, but it is not clear whether nephrolithiasis is a risk factor for hypertension or vice versa. Moreover, a linear relationship exists between calciuria and natriuria, where the calcium is the dependent variable, with a much steeper slope of the straight line in stone formers and hypertensives compared to controls. It has, in fact, been demonstrated that to reduce calcium, it is more efficacious to reduce sodium intake as opposed to calcium intake. Finally, BMI and body weight are independently associated with an increase in stone risk even though, due to a number of bias (limited weight categories, low number of obese persons in the study populations, no control group, no recording of food intake) the studies published failed to be conclusive. In the final analysis, stone disease, arterial hypertension and excess weight/obesity prove to be closely interconnected and it is possible to intervene with targeted diets aimed at reducing the risk of illness and death from these diseases. Among such dietary approaches, the reduction of sodium chloride in food, increased hydration and an increased intake of foods with an alkaline potential seem to play an important role. For many years now, the investigators research unit has been involved in projects, partially financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR), geared towards studying the effects induced by dietary changes in patients with calcium stone disease. The aim of the present project is to analyse in depth the relationship between stone disease, hypertension, body weight and water and salt intake both in the general population of the area of Parma (where historically and by gastronomic tradition, the usual diet tends to have a high salt content) and in a selected population of stone formers and hypertensives not under treatment. A representative sample of the population of the area of Parma will be studied, divided on the basis of weight category, in order to assess water and salt intake and relationships with the presence of hypertension, and a sample of normal and hypertensive stone formers randomized to receive for one year either water therapy+low salt diet or water therapy alone.
The study aims to determine if somatic dysfunctions of the pelvis, sacrum and lower lumbar spine have an effect on weight bearing. Our subjects are young, healthy subjects without recent soft tissue or osseous injury, a less than predetermined leg length discrepancy or OMM/chiropractic treatment. Their leg lengths will be measured; weight-bearing will be measured using a specialized scale and somatic dysfunctions diagnosed to determine if any correlation exists.

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing among pregnant women in the United States. More than one-third of women of reproductive age in the US are overweight or obese, and two thirds of women gain more weight in pregnancy than is recommended by the Institute of Medicine guidelines. Maternal obesity during pregnancy increases the risk of complications to both mother and child. Minority women (Blacks and Hispanics) have higher rates of overweight and obesity when they become pregnant, experience higher rates of excessive weight gain during pregnancy, and experience higher rates of maternal and neonatal complications after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and comorbidities than Caucasian women. Epidemiologic studies indicate that lifestyle modification programs based on diet and exercise are promising approaches in controlling weight gain as well as in preventing type 2 diabetes in populations at risk. We hypothesize that overweight/obese minority women (Blacks and Hispanics) assigned to a culturally-grounded lifestyle intervention program based on diet and moderate exercise will result in higher compliance with Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain than women receiving standard care. Such lifestyle modifications should reduce risk of maternal and neonatal complications. We propose 1) to determine whether a lifestyle intervention program, based on diet and moderate physical activity implemented shortly after first recognition of pregnancy, will result in higher compliance with Institute of Medicine guidelines for weight gain compared to women receiving standard care; 2) to determine the occurrence of carbohydrate intolerance and GDM at 24-28 weeks gestation (after the first 10-12 weeks of intervention) and at 6 weeks postpartum between women in the lifestyle intervention group and women receiving standard care; and 3) to explore the impact of the lifestyle intervention on the development of maternal and fetal complications during pregnancy. By limiting excessive weight gain, the lifestyle intervention program may prevent the burden of obesity-related complications during pregnancy and reduce risk of subsequently developing overt diabetes.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether subjects following a high protein diet will gain less in weight after smoking cessation compared to subjects following a low fat diet due to the effects of protein on metabolic rate and hunger.
The purpose of this study is to compare standard Behavior Therapy (BT), BT plus Meal Replacements (MR) and a condition focusing on the nutritional changes to the home food environment (HFE) on weight loss, weight loss maintenance, nutritional composition of the diet and psychosocial outcomes. A second aim is to determine the degree to which the specific targets of the experimental interventions do in fact change in the anticipated direction during the intervention and to evaluate whether such changes might account for improvements in weight loss maintenance. This study is important because it could provide the first evidence that the current standard of care for obesity lifestyle treatment could be improved by the addition of MRs or a program of comprehensive nutritional change.
