Effects of Open-label Placebos on COVID-related Psychological Health

This project aimed to test the efficacy of a telehealth-administered placebo without deception intervention on stress, anxiety, and depression related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were randomized into two groups (open-label placebo vs. no-treatment control). All participants received information on the impact of COVID-19 on psychological health. Participants in the open-label placebo group were instructed to watch an informational video on the beneficial effects of placebos without deception, remotely interact with an experimenter, and take open-label placebo pills twice a day for two weeks. Participants in the no-treatment control group did not receive any intervention. Instead, participants met with an experimenter and reported on their psychological and physical health. The investigators predicted that the placebo without deception group would exhibit substantially reduced stress, depression, and anxiety compared to a no-treatment control group.

Foot Reflexology to Reduce Pain and Anxiety Before Chest Tube Removal

In open heart surgeries, patients experience severe pain due to tissue trauma, damage to intercostal nerves, and muscle spasm due to pulling tubes from the mediastinal space and between the pleural leaves pull during chet tube removal (CTR). When acute pain is not relieved, the patient develops emotional, psychological (eg post-traumatic stress disorder) and physical problems (eg chronic pain) after surgery. Since this situation negatively affects the healing process, it increases the anxiety level of the patients and decreases the comfort level. Reflexology is one of the non-pharmacological methods used in the management of pain and anxiety after open heart surgery The aim of this randomized controlled study was to identify the effect of foot reflexology applied before chest tube removal process on pain and anxiety level. This study will be done a randomized-controlled trial to test the intervention.

Web-based Single-session Growth Mindset Intervention for Adolescent Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders worldwide. In Hong Kong, 7% of adolescents are diagnosed with anxiety disorders, and one in every four secondary school students reports clinical-level anxiety symptoms. However, 65% of them do not access services. Long waitlists in public services, the high cost of private services, or the fear of being stigmatized can hinder service access. The high prevalence of anxiety and low intervention uptake indicate a pressing need to develop timely, scalable, and potent interventions suitable for adolescents. Single-session interventions (SSIs) have the potential to be scalable interventions for diagnosable or subclinical psychopathology in adolescents. Providing precise and context-adapted intervention is the key to achieving intervention efficacy. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of four SSIs: Single-session Intervention of Growth Mindset for Anxiety (SIGMA), SIGMA with booster messages, SSI of Growth mindset of Personality (SSI-GP), and active control using support therapy (ST), in reducing adolescent anxiety. Adolescents (N=731, aged 12-20) from secondary schools have been randomized to one of the four intervention conditions: the SIGMA, SIGMA-BOOSTER, SSI-GP, or active control. The implementation of each intervention is approximately 45 minutes in length. Adolescent participants reported anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, and suicidal/self-hurting thoughts (primary outcomes); perceived control, hopelessness, attitude toward help-seeking and psychological well-being (secondary outcomes) at pre-intervention, the 2-week and 8-week follow-up. A pilot test has confirmed the feasibility and acceptability of SIGMA among adolescents. We hypothesized that SIGMA (including SIGMA and SIGMA-BOOSTER) and SSI-GP will result in a larger reduction in anxiety symptoms than the control intervention. We also predict SIGMA (including SIGMA and SIGMA-BOOSTER) will be more effective than SSI-GP. We will use the intention-to-treat principle and generalised estimating equation models for data analysis. This study was conducted from December 2022 to June 2023, with results expected to be available by March 2024. This protocol introduces the implementation content and strategies of growth mindset SSIs among school students. The study will provide evidence on the efficacy of different growth mindset SSIs for adolescent anxiety. It will also establish implementation strategies for self-administrative SSIs among school students, which can serve as a pioneer implementation of a scalable and self-accessible brief intervention to improve the well-being of young people.

The Effects of Virtual Reality Glasses on Vital Signs and Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Colonoscopy

The present study was conducted with 44 patients who applied to the Endoscopy Unit of a university hospital for sedation-free colonoscopy between January 2, 2020 and September 28, 2020, met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. The patients were homogeneously divided into experimental (n=22) and control (n=22) groups based on their gender and history of colonoscopy. The patients in the experimental group watched a 360 degree virtual reailty (VR) video with atmospheric background music over images and sounds of nature through virtual reality glasses while no application was performed for the patients in the control group during the procedure. The "Demographic Information Form", "Trait Anxiety Scale", "Visual Analog Scale-Pain", "Visual Analog Scale-Anxiety", "Vital Signs Monitoring Chart" and "Satisfaction Evaluation on the Virtual Reality Glasses Application" forms were used in the data collection phase. For the study, an ethics committee approval was obtained in addition to written consent by the institutions and patients. Numbers, percentages, the Chi-square test, the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for data analysis.

Anxiety Symptoms in Relation to Use of Hemp-derived, Full Spectrum Cannabidiol (CBD)

Generalized anxiety disorder affects about 6.8 million adults in the United States, therefore its treatment is of major public health interest. Cannabidiol (CBD) has shown promise as an effective treatment for anxiety-related symptoms while lacking the severity of adverse effects seen with other medications. Given the wide availability of products containing CBD on the market today, from tinctures to coffee additives, and the undetermined potential for drug-to-drug interactions, medical supervision of CBD intake and formulation-specific clinical research is necessary. Therefore this study aimed to observe the effects of a specific hemp-derived full spectrum CBD formula on anxiety-related symptoms in a group of volunteers. The investigators will examine the self-reported anxiety symptoms in relation to use of a specific CBD formulation (25mg solvent-free full spectrum CBD capsules) in a cohort of adults diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. This open-label, cohort study will be conducted at six clinic sites in the United States (including Puerto Rico) from June 2020 through October 2020. The six physicians recruited to participate in the study were each actively prescribing CBD in their practices and were actively caring for patients with anxiety symptoms. Anxiety levels will be measured in enrolled participants diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder each week for a period of eight weeks using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale (GAD7). Participants will also be instructed to take a daily 25mg capsule of CBD. The investigators hypothesize that this formula, when carefully developed and administered by a healthcare professional, will significantly reduce anxiety symptoms.
