Filter by:Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is caused primarily by smoking and smoking cessation is the first-line treatment for slowing disease progression. Despite this, nearly 50% of COPD patients continue to smoke following diagnosis. Smokers with COPD report high rates of co-occurring conditions - nicotine dependence, depression, and anxiety - which serve as barriers to quitting. The current study will pilot test a behavioral intervention designed to target the common psychological factors underlying these co-occurring conditions and foster smoking cessation among COPD patients.

Tobacco use is one of the world's leading preventable causes of disease and premature death, and the physician has a central role in detecting smokers and helping them to quit. Tobacco use in the military undermines fitness, readiness and performance, and increases health care costs. A study conducted on a French Army contingent on external operations in Afghanistan have shown an increase in tobacco use in situation of operational constraints (stress, shift work, etc.). However, another study conducted in Ivory Coast on a mobile gendarmerie squadron showed no significant difference. Among the American firefighters who have been exposed to the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, smoking have been shown to play an aggravating role in the recovery of lung function. This study is aimed at assessing smoking prevalence in the Paris Fire Brigade, which is composed of young and healthy sportsmen and women who are exposed to strong operational constraints.
This study will evaluate exposure to tar and nicotine from two cigarette products that contain a menthol capsule in the filter, and provide a basis for comparing mouth-level exposure when smokers smoke the two cigarette products.
This research study will evaluate the preliminary efficacy of Pride Posts Plus, a social media-based smoking cessation treatment. A pilot randomized trial (N=120) will compare Pride Posts Plus, which includes a gamification element, to Pride Posts (without gamification) and to a usual care treatment. Participants will be adults who smoke, identify as sexual or gender minorities, and use Facebook. The primary outcome will be biochemically verified 7-day abstinence from smoking at 3 and 6 months. Secondary outcomes will be treatment engagement, a quit attempt (y/n), and thoughts about tobacco abstinence at 3 and 6 mos.
This is a single site, open-label, randomized, cross-over study designed to evaluate elements of abuse liability (AL) including subjective effects and physiological measures (pharmacodynamics [PD]) and plasma nicotine uptake (pharmacokinetics [PK]) during and following ad libitum use of the study investigational products (IPs) by generally healthy subjects.
A novel type of non-cigarette tobacco product was recently approved for sale in the US, the heated tobacco product (HTP) IQOS. IQOS may be less harmful than cigarettes, and there are some reports that it may produce more rewarding subjective effects compared to e-cigarettes. The approval of IQOS provides a unique opportunity to gather preliminary data surrounding IQOS. The goal of this pilot study is to assess the subjective effects and relative reinforcement value of IQOS, including its downstream effects on cigarette smoking. Current smokers will complete a one-week baseline period where they smoke as normal before attending an in-person lab visit. During the in-person lab visit, participants (n=10) will sample a traditional cigarette and a novel IQOS tobacco product. Participants will answer questionnaires about each product they sample and then complete a preference assessment in which they choose between the IQOS and their own cigarette. Finally, participants will take home a tobacco product they sampled to use ad libitum (1-week sampling). During the at-home baseline and sampling weeks, participants will complete electronic daily diaries cataloging their tobacco use. Biomarkers (i.e., expired carbon monoxide, cotinine) will corroborate self-reported indices of use.
This study will be a single-center, controlled, open-label, parallel two-study-group investigation to evaluate the puffing patterns of healthy adult consumers of tobacco products switching from a usual brand (UB) Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) product to one of two different ENDS, Product A with 1.5% nicotine, and Product B with 3.0% nicotine, over a three-week ambulatory period. This study will be conducted in support of a Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) ENDS submission to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).
The investigators will conduct a pragmatic clinical trial to test the effect of patient navigation on lung cancer screening (LCS) low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) completion among Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) patients at increased risk for lung cancer. Patient navigation is a strategy for guiding individuals through complex health systems, and the investigators hypothesize that this may be a promising approach for helping homeless-experienced people overcome their unique barriers to obtaining LCS. The investigators will aim to recruit 300 people to participate in this research study; 100 will be randomly assigned to arm 1 (usual care) and 200 will be randomly assigned to arm 2 (patient navigation). Randomization of participants will be stratified by smoking status, housing status, clinical site, and whether they have previously discussed LCS with their primary care provider (PCP) to ensure balance between study groups on these variables. People assigned to the usual care arm will be referred back to their PCP for further management. People assigned to the patient navigation arm will be given the chance to work with a LCS navigator. The navigator will assist participants and their PCPs with all aspects of the LCS process in addition to offering brief tobacco counseling for current smokers. The primary aim of the trial is to determine-among homeless-experienced people who are eligible for LCS-the effect of patient navigation on 1) LCS LDCT completion at 6 months post-enrollment and 2) LCS LDCT completion at 6 months with diagnostic follow-up of abnormal results within 1 month of the recommended time frame. Study outcomes will be assessed by examining participant health records. Following the intervention, qualitative interviews will be conducted with 40 participants and 10 BHCHP PCPs to better understand how the LCS process unfolds in the setting of homelessness, the ways in which the navigator facilitated this process, and opportunities for improving the navigation intervention for future use.
