Filter by:Inflammation has been consistently associated with psychoneurological symptoms (PNS) among breast cancer survivors (BCS). Evidence supporting interventional strategies promoting symptom-self management in reducing inflammation-induced PNS in BCS is limited. Current guidelines for BCS encourage the consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), abundantly available in fish, has a role in inflammatory downregulation. Low dietary DHA has been associated with inflammation and fatigue in BCS. Dietary planning targeting increased fish consumption thereby reducing red and processed meats are components of the major nutritional recommendations for BCS. A critical gap exists in knowledge regarding interventions promoting adherence to dietary guidelines in BCS supporting PNS self-management. This investigation uses personalized meal planning among BCSs (n=150) who are 1-2 years post-treatment for early-stage breast cancer and experiencing PNS (pain, fatigue, depression, sleep disturbance, stress) to evaluate the feasibility of a personalized meal planning approach in supporting adherence to current dietary guidelines for BCS. As a first step in this program of research, we will evaluate the feasibility of an personalized meal planning approach in promoting adherence to dietary guidelines for BCS through evaluating the feasibility of a personalized meal planning approach in a cohort of BCSs with respect to recruitment, group allocation, salivary inflammatory quantification and receptivity to and adherence with dietary interventions. This investigation will also contribute to a preliminarily evaluation of the efficacy of high or low fish diet in reducing inflammation (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-a) and PNS symptoms. Nationally, there is a priority for the development of personalized health strategies supporting self-management of adverse symptoms. This investigation focused on PNS in BCS is an initial step in generating new knowledge in efficacious approaches toward guiding decisions on dietary behavior change strategies that are personalized, cost-effective, and sustainable.
This study will include any participant who registered, and plans to attend the Inner Engineering In-Person Completion Course. In 2019, this course was offered in: Los Angeles in March, Philadelphia in April and Toronto & Dallas in November. This study has been involved in every IECO Course since 2019 and is still active today. Beginning in August 2021, investigators will recruit for the August Inner Engineering In-Person Completion Course. Investigators anticipate that this study can include up to 5,000 study participants. Participants would attend this course and complete the pre-modules regardless of whether or not they participate in this study.
The proposed study tests the effects of a novel remotely-delivered group cognitive behavioral stress management (R-CBSM) intervention on improving health and quality of life in older women undergoing breast cancer (BCa) treatment. This study tests if delivered home-based group CBSM (R-CBSM) improves response to influenza vaccine (IV) in parallel with improved psychological adaptation, inflammation and other immune functioning indicators in older women treated for BCa.
This research study refines a wellness program designed for caregivers of autistic children called 5Minutes4Myself and further investigates its feasibility. Participants will attend a workshop to consent, participate in focus groups on lifestyle issues, and complete a baseline survey. Participants will have an individualized consultation with a coach to develop their tailored wellness program and be introduced to an app that support habits to build wellness activities into their daily life. The app provides the participant with their goal profile, tailored reminders, weekly check-ins, and delivers a micro-mindfulness program. Coaches will check-in monthly with participants and work together to modify their program as desired. After 4-6 months, participants will gather for a closing workshop to discuss their lifestyle and to evaluate the program. Pre-/post-surveys will examine health, well-being, stress, depression, and mindfulness. The app usability will be assessed using the Modified Systems Usability Scale (MSUS) as well as usage data.
Mindfulness-based Interventions (MBIs) are a family of standardized cognitive and behavioral therapies that focus on cultivating mindfulness-related skills for improving maladaptive cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processes. MBIs have been developed for a wide range of problems, disorders, and populations and are increasingly available in a variety of health settings. This mixed methods study proposes to investigate proposed neurobiological, physiological, psycho-social-behavioral, and cognitive mechanisms by which MBIs may improve health outcomes.
This study is to evaluate the effects of the SMART-3RP (Stress Management and Resiliency Training Relaxation Response Resiliency Program) on physician and academic faculty well-being, perceived stress, burnout, compassion, and job satisfaction.
The purpose of this study is to determine what tools best assist university students develop a personal meditation practice to self-manage stress. The two treatment conditions are 1) independent meditation using web-based tools and apps, and 2) independent meditation using web-based tools, apps and EEG-based neurofeedback. Outcomes of interest include acceptability, adherence, changes in mental health (i.e., anxiety, stress), physical health (i.e., sleep, inflammation), resilience, and level of commitment to further practice. Factors related to self-regulation (i.e., interoceptive awareness, self-esteem) will also be assessed as potential outcome moderators.
The goal of this research study is to improve the self-management of pain, stress, and cognitive/affective symptoms that may result in adult inpatients with sickle cell disease (SCD) by determining the feasibility of a self-management guided relaxation (GR) stress reduction intervention using a tablet-based mobile device. Currently, opioid analgesics are primarily used to treat SCD pain while self-managed behavioral modalities such as GR, are rarely used, particularly, in inpatient settings. Little is known about the effects or mechanisms of GR on pain, stress, and cognitive/affective symptoms in adults with SCD hospitalized with pain. Emerging evidence from the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis theory offer insights for understanding the mechanisms. Adding GR as a supplement to analgesic therapies will address the dearth of self-management strategies for controlling pain in SCD. GR is a simple and cost-effective non-drug intervention that could reduce pain and stress in inpatients with SCD. GR is an intervention where inpatients with SCD are directed to listen to and view audio-visual recordings while they visualize themselves being immersed in that scenario.
Meditation improves attention and memory by reducing of the increased electric brain activity induced by a high stress level. This is associated to neuroplastic changes (volume reduction and/or neuron's density increases) in various brain structures. The question evolves if memory improvement by a standardized meditation program of 8 weeks (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction MBSR) or a specific memory training (My Brain Training MBT) is a specific effect on brain networking or mediated by a reduced general activity induced by stress reduction. Thus, meditation or memory training should have differing neuroplastic effects. The effects of memory function improvement by the respective training will be measured by MAT, a specific and validated computerized memory and attention test. Brain morphology is investigated by voxel based morphometry NMR before and immediately after an 8 weeks intervention period. Stress levels are measured by cortisol profiles of subjects. Compared were 4 groups- "MBSR" group- MBSR students after completed training, passive "control" group- subjects following an 8 weeks waiting period for the MBSR training without any memory training, active control "MBT" group- subjects on an 8 weeks waiting period for the MBSR training doing an 8 weeks MBT memory training instead, "Wellness" group - doing a structured program using relaxing massage and calming computerized chair ("Brain Light"). The hypothesis of the study is that MBSR improves memory function better than MBT when measured by MAT. Compared to both active and passive controls, MBSR training induces specific morphologic changes in the brain, indicated by a volume change of the voxel based morphometry method of 5% of a defined brain region. In comparison to smaller and less neuroplasticity induced by MBT on memory brain regions, MBSR induces greater volume changes on hippocampus and amygdala and stress reduction than the wellness program.
EEG protocols exist for reducing stress and improve PTSD symptoms (A/T EEG protocols, Peniston, 1993, Hammond, 2005) however; our innovative EEG-NF LMI approach intends to be more amygdala/stress specific and therefore more efficient. Three groups of soldiers, while in operational activity will go through 24 sessions of 3 different methods of EEG-NF; our newly developed NF via MLI, a standard procedure for NF via A/T and a placebo NF. Difference between the groups in regard to their emotion regulation capability will be tested by fMRI with regard to amygdala activation following EEG-NF LMI as well as two stress challenge tests.
