Healing Experiences of Adversity Among Latinos (HEALthy4You)

Healing Experiences of Adversity Among Latinos (HEALthy4You) is a project funded by the California Initiative for the Advancement of Precision Medicine ("Advancing a Precision Population Health Approach to ACEs to Reduce Health Disparities"). The long-term goal of this project is to develop community-centered, culturally Appropriate, precision Interventions that can be delivered within Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers (FQHCs) for Latino Families, to reduce Adverse Child Events (ACES) risks and treat childhood obesity. UCSD in conjunction with Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) will conduct a 2x2 factorial trial with four groups meant to determine what combination of intervention components influence family protective factors (a key marker for reduced risk of the deleterious effects of systemic and family/individual stressors that are a critical part of ACEs) and childhood obesity.

State-dependent Interoception, Value-based Decision-making, and Introspection

Background: Negative emotional states can affect a person s behavior as they make decisions. For example, hunger may make people more impatient; they may then make riskier choices. Other negative emotional states that can change behavior include stress, pain, and sadness. By learning more about how emotions affect thinking and behavior in healthy people, researchers hope to better understand how to identify and treat people with mental disorders. Objective: To learn how negative emotions affect the brain and decision-making behavior. Eligibility: Healthy people aged 18 to 55 years. Design: Participants will have 3 clinic visits in 3 weeks. Participants will fill out questionnaires. They will be asked about their personal history, their personality, and state of mind. For 2 visits, participants will be assigned to different groups. Each group will experience 1 type of emotional stressor: Some participants will watch a video. Some will have to do arithmetic problems. Some will have heat applied to an arm or leg. Some will experience cold by immersing their hand in ice water. For a snack craving test, some will be tempted by food after a 4-hour fast. During these tests, participants will have sensors attached to their bodies. They will be videotaped. Saliva samples will be collected. After the stressors, participants will do tasks on a computer. They will need to make choices. Some participants will perform these decision-making tasks while lying in a brain scanner for functional magnetic resonance imaging. The brain scan involves lying on a table that slides into a cylinder that takes images of the brain.

Influence of Resentment and Forgivingness on Quality of Life in People Living With HIV

Life stress is strongly associated with poor mental and physical health and its effects explain significant morbidity and mortality. Forgiveness is one of the factors that can influence the effects of stress on health. By definition, forgiveness is the release of negative feelings, emotions, and behaviors - and possibly the release of positive feelings - toward an offender. Numerous studies have shown that forgiveness is associated with several mental and physical health benefits. The literature argues that high levels of propensity to forgive (trait) predispose that person to experience forgiveness (state) more often. In other words, a stronger forgiving disposition is believed to increase the experience of forgiveness, which, in turn, mitigates the negative effects of stress. Forgiveness is therefore a coping style that can play a beneficial role in the stress-health relationship. Patients living with HIV (PLHIV) are patients particularly exposed to stress, not only because of their chronic pathology but also because of the stigma attached to this disease. Very few studies have studied the impact of forgiveness (state or trait) on the physical health of PLHIV and even fewer the impact of an intervention promoting the disposition to forgive. The objective of this prospective observational monocentric study is to show in a very secular country that forgiveness has an effect on well-being as well as on other health parameters.

Mightier Play and Caregiver Stress and Wellbeing

The primary goal of this study is to demonstrate that digital mental health interventions for children, such as Mightier, can have an impact on caregiver functioning, including parenting stress, overall wellbeing, and work engagement. Participants will be caregivers of children who are using Mightier, a video-game based heart rate biofeedback intervention used to build emotion regulation. Caregivers will be asked to complete a short survey prior to their child's first play and then complete that survey two more times, at 8 weeks and 12 weeks post baseline. The pre-post self report design will allow us to observe changes during Mightier use and relate those changes to overall engagement with the intervention.

A Pilot RCT on the Effect of ExAT on Teacher Burnout and Stress

The objective of this pilot randomized controlled trial is to evaluate the effects of Expressive Art Therapy on reducing burnout and stress symptoms among Hong Kong's primary and secondary school teachers. The proposed study is a pilot randomized controlled trial. Prior to all study procedures, 90 participants (i.e., primary and secondary school teachers) will be recruited to complete an online informed consent with telephone support. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to either the Expressive Arts Therapy group (ExAT group) or the waitlist control group (WL group) in a ratio of 1:1. The ExAT group will receive the Expressive Arts intervention via face-to-face workshops for 2 consecutive weeks (2 hours per session). There are a total of 3 batches (around 15 participants per batch) for the intervention. Participants in this group will be in touch with their inner selves and inner resources via body movement, writing and music. There will be visual art creation as a conclusion for integrating the body and mind. The art products would be placed in their workplace for stress regulation. The WL control group will not receive any intervention during the study, but they will receive self-help art therapy materials after the whole study procedure. The outcome measures include burnout, stress, depressive, and anxiety symptoms, as well as insomnia symptoms, physical activity, health-related quality of life, and the intervention acceptability at baseline, immediate post-treatment, and 4-week follow-up assessments by completing the same questionnaire set.

Leading Well-being and the Psychosocial Working Environment - A Cluster-randomized Waitlist Controlled Trial

The design comprises a cluster, randomized waitlist controlled design. The goal of the study is to prevent stress and burnout in middle managers and employees in a hospital setting. The study population is middle managers in a hospital setting. The intervention comprises five training modules with practice in small groups in between. Training will take place over 5 months. The training will be received in groups of 20 middle managers and the training will be facilitated by 2 facilitators. Themes of training are inspired by the concept of Health Oriented Leadership which takes into account that the well-being of managers is important for the well-being of employees. Central themes of the training are: 1) Self-care and well-being of the manager and how to cope with stress as a manager. 2) Employee well-being and reducing risk-factors in the psychosocial working environment of employee mental health problems. 3) Enhancing protective factors social social support and a healthy team climate. 4) Responding to employees at risk and how to handle difficult conversations and procedures on return to work. 5) Managing well-being in employees during changes and pressure. In order to establish commitment for the waitlist control group, the control group will receive an offer of a webinar and some written information. Middle managers in both intervention arms will receive a questionnaire at baseline, after the intervention and at 6 months follow-up. The intervention group will also receive a short questionnaire after each training. The following expectations are hypothesized: The training will improve self-care and perceived staff-care in middle managers and employees in the intervention group when compared to the control group The training will improve psychological outcomes of stress, well-being, exhaustion and psychological symptoms among middle managers and employees in the intervention group when compared to the control group The training will improve the perceived psychosocial working environment (PSWE) among middle managers and employees in the intervention group when compared to the control group The training will reduce sickness absence and retention among middle managers and employees in the intervention group when compared to the control group Middle managers who adhere more to the training will experience larger improvements in self-care, staff-care and mental outcomes

Feasibility of Egg-Based Diet Interventions and Assessing Perinatal Mental Health

The goals of this study are to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a dietary intervention to increase choline intake through whole foods (eggs) in pregnant and lactating women for mental health benefits. We will achieve these goals through the following specific aims: 1. To determine the effects of including eggs as a source of choline in the diets of pregnant and lactating women on biomarkers, we will measure concentrations of choline and choline metabolites in maternal serum and breastmilk at 24-26 weeks gestation and 4-6 weeks postpartum. 2. To evaluate adherence to a food-based dietary choline intervention in pregnant and lactating women, we will track intake via daily photo and written food logs. 3. To assess the feasibility of collecting repeated measures of dietary intake and maternal depression, anxiety, and stress in the perinatal period, we will track completion rates for project surveys. The data from this study will inform the design and sample size calculations for a longitudinal cohort study that will assess neurological outcomes for both mother and child and follow the offspring over time to reassess mental health and cognitive development in preschool-aged children. Choline is an underconsumed nutrient of concern for public health, specifically during pregnancy and lactation. There is limited data on biomarker or health outcomes related to perinatal choline intake. Determining relationships between perinatal choline intake and maternal mental health has the potential to impact public health by ultimately informing development of nutrition education materials in the clinical setting focused on encouraging maternal perinatal choline intake through whole foods such as eggs.

Healthcare Providers as Trusted Messengers to Increase Receipt of Tax Credits Among Low-income Families

The purpose of this study is to pilot test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of healthcare provider referrals to a tax filing app within parent-child health programs to test whether such referrals can increase receipt of tax credits among low-income parents. The study will use a single-group, pre/post test design with a sample of approximately 100 women who have a child under 6 years of age. Participants will be recruited from parental-child health programs and clinics in Los Angeles and will complete surveys at baseline, immediately after tax filing season, and six months after tax filing season to assess 1) frequency of tax filing after referral (Feasibility), 2) the acceptability of the tax filing app from the perspective of users (Acceptability), and 3) pre/posttest changes to parent and child health, child development, and healthcare utilization measures for users (preliminary efficacy).

Mindfulness-Based Peak Performance, Endurance Performance Under Pressure, Performance-relevant Mental Attributes

The primary aim of this study is to conduct a well-designed trial to investigate the effect of an MBI program entitled Mindfulness-based Peak Performance (MBPP) on endurance performance under pressure from an interdisciplinary approach of sport psychology, sports training, and cognitive neuroscience. The secondary aim is to examine the effect of MBPP program on performance-relevant mental attributes in behavioral and neurocognitive assessments. The present study hypothesizes that the MBPP and self-talk groups will improve performance under pressure, but MBPP is expected to show greater improvement than ST. Additionally, we expect the MBPP will improve the relevant mental attributes.
