Filter by:The investigators will test the efficacy of our proposed intervention to reduce embodied stress in four racial/ethnic groups (Black, Latinx, Pilipinx, and Pacific Islander) as a preventative intervention for health disparities found in these communities. The intervention is comprised of two phases. The first consists of community nature walks in a pristine redwood forest for six months. This is followed by chosen nature activities with family and/or friends for three months. The investigators will test the ability of these activities in nature to reduce chronic stress that underpins many health disparities using validated biological, behavioral, and sociocultural measures. The use of these measures is in alignment with the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Framework, and will increase understanding of individual, interpersonal, community, and social level factors that lead to, and that can eliminate health disparities.
The goal of this research is to test whether certain areas of focus in breath meditation are connected with certain mental health outcomes. The main question to be addressed is whether attention placed on the breath in the belly versus the nostrils during meditation results in differences in subjective experience, respiration and heart rate. Participants will: - complete surveys - have heart rate and respiration measured - practice focused breathing Participants can expect the study visit to last for one hour.
The incidence of burnout and mental ill-health begins very early in medical school and continues to be high throughout training. Medical students are under high amounts of stress, which often becomes chronic, and can lead to both physical and psychological issues as a student, resident, and physician. Chronic stress and burnout in medical students are not a new phenomenon, but recent research has highlighted the worsening mental health of medical students, with as high as three-quarters of students reporting mental ill-health. It is vital that ways are found to reduce burnout and assist in improving the mental health of medical students. This quasi-experimental study is an ongoing study which is enrolling cohorts of students as they enter medical school.
Motivational deficits such as anhedonia are core to several psychiatric disorders and underlie significant functional impairment. This double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial of minocycline, an anti-[neuro]inflammatory agent, examines links between chronic stress and responses to a reward-related motivation task. It will evaluate the effects of pharmacologically attenuating neuroinflammation on behavioral responses to a reward-related motivation task in individuals experiencing unemployment. Understanding the effects of neuroinflammation on reward function among individuals experiencing chronic stress represents a critical first step in identifying novel neuroimmune targets for future clinical trials.
The investigators are interested in studying the effects of familial obligations, including marriage, parenthood, familial caregiving, on stress levels in Osteopathic Medical Students (OMS). The investigators expect to find that having a family may increase the stress level of OMS in comparison with OMS who don't have familial obligations.
Introduction Up to half of hospital employees worldwide are experiencing symptoms of burnout. Therefore, interventions to improve mental health among hospital workers are urgently needed. Your World is an inexpensive and easy-to-use intervention that aims to reduce stress and increase resilience among hospital employees. Your world uses a blended approach, which includes a real-life personal session and challenges in the Your World app (for smartphone). Hypothesis The investigators hypothesize that Your World will improve resilience and well-being and reduce stress among hospital employees. Research objectives Main objective - Does Your World reduce stress among hospital employees as measured by the PSS-10? Design Randomised controlled trial Population Employees of the Erasmus University Medical Center including students and volunteers Methods and study procedures Five hundred participants will be randomized 1:1 to receive either Your World (intervention) or the control app (control). In the intervention group, subjects will participate in one 'vitality session' before installing the app. At baseline and after 3 months hair samples questionnaires will be collected among the participants of both groups. At 6 months, same questionnaires will be collected. Burden and risks There are no risks associated with participation in this study. The questionnaires can be filled out online in 15 minutes, hair collection takes 5 minutes. The vitality sessions take 1 hour and the use of the app takes 5 minutes a day.
This study examines cardiovascular responses to a brief psychological challenge under laboratory conditions among adult volunteers. The study volunteers are asked to complete two study sessions. In one session, the volunteers are asked to provide demographic and health-related information via questionnaires and an interview. In that session, volunteers would then be asked to undergo evaluations of their body composition, blood pressure, heart rate, and other signs of cardiovascular function and health. Lastly, volunteers would be asked to take part in a brief and challenging psychological task after a period of rest while cardiovascular activity is measured. In the other session, volunteers are asked to undergo magnetic resonance imaging and to complete neuropsychological tests of memory, attention, and processing speed. In addition to these two sessions, volunteers are asked to complete online questionnaires. The study is designed to examine associations between transient changes in cardiovascular activity induced by the psychological task, measures of overall cardiovascular health, and measures of cerebrovascular health measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Study results are expected to provide new information about the relationships between cardiovascular activity changes to psychological challenges and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health in adults.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the feasibility of remote time-restricted eating (TRE) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) interventions and the preliminary effect on EOCRC-related markers. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: - Is it feasible and acceptable to conduct 8-week remote interventions of TRE, MBSR, and combined TRE+MBSR among young adults with excess adiposity and moderate-to-severe perceived stress? - Will participants in the combined group lose more body weight and reduce their stress levels than those in the remaining groups? - Will participants in the combined group experience better body composition changes and improve their cardiometabolic health compared to those in the remaining groups? - Will participants in the combined group exhibit changes in the microbiome compared to those in the remaining groups? Participants will: - Complete 8 weeks of a TRE intervention - Complete 8 weeks of a remote MBSR intervention Researchers will compare 1. TRE alone; 2. MBSR alone; 3. TRE + MBSR; and 4. Control to see if the study is feasible and acceptable; to see if individuals lose body weight; to see if individual stress levels reduce; to see changes in the microbiome.
The overarching goal of the study is to examine the effects of a new Health and Wellness Curriculum (Pure Power) being implemented in the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto. The Pure Power Curriculum, which the Sonima Foundation (Now Pure Edge Inc.,)developed, includes exercise based on yoga, common exercise regimes, relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and nutrition education, and was introduced in 2014 to the Ravenswood City Schools, independent of the research. The new curriculum was expected to yield dramatic positive effects on students' socio-emotional development, which the investigators aimed to examine through this study. This research evaluation measures the impact of the Pure Power Curriculum on the socioemotional, behavioral, cognitive, academic, and physiological functioning of students in a low-socioeconomic status (SES) school community over time by evaluating student development at three time points: baseline (i.e., prior to implementation of the curriculum), one-year follow-up, and two-year follow-up. Only third and fifth-grade students were eligible for enrollment at baseline. All data collection procedures were replicated with the control group.
The goal of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship between physical and psychological stress and the quality of bowel preparation before a colonoscopy examination, in order to improve the quality of bowel preparation. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does physical and psychological stress affect the quality of colonoscopic bowel preparation, and delay disease detection? How can we improve the quality of colonoscopy? Participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire containing their demographics, history of diseases and drugs, lifestyle habits, and physical and 14-item perceived stress scale(PSS-14). Quality of bowel preparation was assessed by the Boston bowel preparation scale(BPS).
