Change in Social Media Use and Well-being Among College Students Receiving a One-week Exercise or Mindfulness Intervention

The investigators will be randomizing 150 college student participants with high levels of social media use into either a 1) control condition (no intervention), a 2) mindfulness meditation cognitive intervention, or 3) a social media reduction + exercise replacement intervention. Participants complete intervention activities daily for one week. The investigators will collect self-report and behavioral measures of social media use and related psychological constructs at three time points: baseline, immediately after the intervention period, and one-week after the intervention period.

The present study will explore the underlying mechanisms of problematic Internet and smartphone use by focusing on how and when environmental factors affect the positive psychological intervention factors. Hence, the present study will provide scientific empirical evidence to design and formulate follow-up intervention strategies. Aims: I. Apply the dynamic system model of addictive behavior execution in Chinese adolescents with problematic Internet and smartphone use and use longitudinal data to track and explore the underlying mechanisms of environmental factors and personal factors on problematic Internet and smartphone use. II. Identify positive psychological intervention factors that effectively prevent and reduce problematic Internet and smartphone use according to the interview and provide empirical evidence for other intervention designs. III. Conducting a positive psychological intervention in an adolescent population to verify the protective effect of positive psychology factors on problematic Internet and smartphone use. Hypotheses: I. Environmental factors (e.g., child abuse and trauma, parenting behaviors, teachers' encouragement, peer support) will affect the problematic Internet and smartphone use through personal characteristics (e.g., meaning in life); II. The effect of environmental factors on problematic Internet and smartphone use through personal characteristics will be moderated by other positive psychological intervention factors (e.g., character strengths); III. Positive psychological intervention (e.g., meaning-based intervention, strengths-based intervention) is an effective intervention strategy to prevent and reduce problematic Internet and smartphone use.

Our aim is primarily to evaluate whether our patients are exchanging information via social media or the internet and the effects of these shares on their concerns.

Social Media Effects on Mental Health

In the last decade, research on social media and mental health has produced mixed results. Overall, the current findings suggest that the negative effects on mental health are exacerbated by longer and more frequent social media usage, whereas the positive effects are bolstered when social media is used to connect with other people. With the largest number of global users, Facebook is the most frequently studied social media network. Over the past few years, the increasing concerns about the risks associated with Facebook have even translated to wider pop culture conversations, as exemplified by the 2020 documentary The Social Dilemma. In response, Facebook has rolled out a series of features supposed to mitigate these risks and encourage responsible social media usage. These features include activity trackers and reminders, unfollow and snooze buttons, and data sharing regulators. Currently, there is no research done to address whether (1) these features are used at all, and (2) whether they are successful in moderating the negative mental health consequences of Facebook usage. This study seeks to address the gap in literature through a survey done on the crowdsourcing platform Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk).

The hypothesis of this study is that the empowerment program based on Roy Adaptation Model reduces Social Media Addiction, increases Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors and Self-Esteem.
