Health Consequences of Wintering in the French Southern and Antarctic Territories

Polar stays expose people to extreme climate, isolation and confinement. The combination of these factors induces psychological disorders, sleep disorders, immune and endocrine disturbances, and deficiencies. In the TAAF, (French Southern and Antarctic Lands) two types of population coexist: winter residents, exposed to these stressors over long periods, and country people, who benefit from milder conditions and only make short stays. In this context, the investigators have decided to set up this cohort study with the objective of comparing the state of health of the winterers of the TAAF from 2012 to 2017 with that of the country people of the same period, before their stay, during and the year following their return.

In the past few years, research has provided evidence for a possibility of dampening immune system by one's will after undergoing a specific training program. Aim of this study was to verity the efficacy in affecting both mind and body by assessing psoriasis activity and psychological functioning. Among the members of both of the groups intensity of skin lesions and pruritus were assessed, consultation regarding treatment took place and multiple questionnaires regarding sleep quality, mindfulness and depressive symptoms were distributed. Blood samples were collected to asses intensity of inflammation, including interleukins.

Prognostic Impact of Sleep Disorders in Patients : Pro-TSIC Study

Heart failure (HF) is a common and progressive condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Only 25-35% of patients survive 5 years after diagnosis.Sleep disorders are frequently found in this population with up to 94% of patients complaining of sleep disorders. Of these, insomnia and sleep disorders are the most common. The frequency of restless legs syndrome (RLS) varies between 4 and 40% depending on the studies. Patients with HF frequently experience poor sleep quality which is associated with deterioration in quality of life, alertness, and mood. Few studies have examined the prognostic impact of sleep disturbances in this population. A greater morbidity and mortality is observed in the event of poor quality sleep or in the presence of sleep breathing disorders . The investigators therefore propose to evaluate the sleep disorders of patients with HF by self-administered questionnaires, hypothesizing that complaints of poor sleep are linked to a poorer cardiovascular prognosis.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi) in Patients With Mental Illness

Insomnia is common in patients with co-morbid mental illness and sleeping difficulties is a frequent complaint in most psychological disorders. Mental illness may cause sleep problems, however, sleep problems like insomnia, may also cause or exacerbate mental illness. Insomnia may aggravate symptoms of depression, anxiety and fatigue, and reduce daily functioning in patients with co-morbid insomnia and mental illness. This project aims to evaluate a course offered to patients with insomnia and mental illness at Diakonhjemmet Hospital. The course is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, a documented treatment for insomnia.

Use of Wearable Devices to Assess the Impact of Stress in Workers' Life Quality

Introduction: Work stress has become more and more important in the last years as it affects both health and productivity of workers. In the last years, different wearables devices have started to be used to monitor stress at work to understand their consequences on daily life activity and sleep quality. Objective: to establish whether wearable wristbands are devices capable of determining the work stress level of workers from a research center in Galicia, for which different variables related to the work stress level and quality of life of these workers will be evaluated. Methods and analysis: The only inclusion criterion is to be a worker from a research center from Galicia. As for exclusion criteria, will not be allowed to participate those workers who are close to retirement ( <5 years), have health issues that hinder participation in the study, or present skin hypersensitivity or allergic reactions due to the materials the wristbands are made. This is a pilot study to determine the viability, sample size, cost, and duration of the study. This is an observational, analytic, and longitudinal study. In other words, in this study different variables from the population of interest will be observed and recorded without any direct intervention, so as to establish causality associations between these variables. It is considered as longitudinal since a six-months tracking of the variables will be performed. As for the statistical analysis, different tests will be performed to analyse the distribution, correlation, and association of the different features, as well as the significant differences between them at different points of the study (detailed below).
