Filter by:Sleep disorders can impair cognitive function, decision-making ability, exercise capacity, and immune system.Sleep disorders, which may occur in the perioperative period as short-term or long-term, affect many patients. Patients have to face with perioperative sleep disorders, and this situation can continue for a long time after surgery. Anesthetic agents may cause sleep disturbances in the postoperative period. Anesthetics can disrupt the normal sleep-wake cycle and thus cause sleep insufficiency and poor sleep quality. The relationship between general anesthesia and postoperative sleep disorders is still unclear. It is advantageous to identify patients with pre-existing sleep disorders, since the risk of postoperative sleep disturbance is high. The investigators hypothesis that regional anesthesia does not disrupt the circadian rhythm compared to general anesthesia, is more successful in pain control, and thus provides a better sleep quality for patients.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is common, deadly, and costly, and adults with insomnia represent a large group of people at elevated risk of developing CVD in the future. This clinical trial will determine if our updated insomnia treatment, called the SHADES intervention, improves CVD factors thought to explain how insomnia promotes CVD and if these improvements are due to positive changes in sleep factors. A total of 200 primary care patients with insomnia and CVD risk factors will be randomized to 6 months of the SHADES intervention (internet, telephonic, and/or face-to-face cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia) or the active control condition (sleep education/hygiene, symptom monitoring, and primary care for insomnia). Before and after treatment, participants will complete measurements of the CVD factors (systemic inflammation, autonomic dysfunction, metabolic dysregulation, proinflammatory gene expression) and the sleep factors (insomnia symptoms, sleep onset latency, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency). Researchers will test whether the SHADES intervention produces greater improvements in the CVD factors than the active control condition.
Circadian rest-Activity Rhythm disorders (CARDs) are common in patients with cancer, particularly in advanced disease. CARDs are associated with increased symptoms, poorer quality of life, poorer response to anticancer treatments and shorter survival. The goal of this observational study is to see how common CARDs are in patients with advanced cancer and to characterise their rest and activity patterns in more detail. A recent study has outlined a standard way to assess and diagnose a CARD. This study aims to assess patients with advanced cancer for a CARD using a novel screening tool against this newly formed diagnostic criteria. Potentially modifiable risk factors will be considered along with associations between CARDs and symptoms, sleep preferences, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, quality of life measures and predictors of survival.
This protocol focuses on the effect of sleep interventions on improving sleep and building cognitive/brain resilience in older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and sleep disturbance. Two sleep interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) and acoustic slow-wave activity enhancement (SWAE), will be utilized in a pilot randomized clinical trial in which participants are randomized to different treatment groups (CBTI or SWAE). Participants will be assessed over a 6-month period in order to examine the impact of sleep treatments on neuropsychological outcomes and cognitively mediated everyday functioning.

Chronic pain is a major health concern for returning Veterans and is associated with decreases in quality of life. In addition, chronic pain is often accompanied by significant disturbance in sleep. Sensory interventions may offer effective, low-cost complementary tools for chronic pain and sleep disturbance in Veterans. Weighted Blankets (WB)- blankets sewn with weighted material inside to provide widespread pressure to the body- are a low-cost wellness product used for anxiety and sleep. WBs have demonstrated large reductions in insomnia, and the investigators have also shown that they can reduce the severity of chronic pain. However, effects and mechanisms of longer WB use have not been examined in individuals with pain and sleep disturbance. The investigators therefore propose a randomized controlled trial examining the effects of WBs on pain and sleep quality in Veterans. the investigators will recruit Veterans with chronic pain and sleep disturbance from the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) and VA San Francisco Healthcare System (VASFHS) and randomize 160 Veterans to receive either a light (3-lb; N = 80) or heavy (15-lb; N = 80) blanket. The investigators will remotely collect measures of pain (primary), pain catastrophizing, and pain medication use, as well as sleep disturbance (primary) and sleep efficiency and total sleep time over 6 weeks of overnight home use of the assigned blanket. The investigators will also explore physiological effects of WBs on sleep quality using actigraphy (exploratory) in VASDHS participants. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods will be deployed via smartphone to capture study adherence.
The goal of this trial is to learn about how restricted sleep and not bearing weight on the leg affects muscle strength and posture control. Participants will walk exclusively on one leg, sleep at differing intervals, and complete posture tests, muscle strength tests, and muscle imaging. Researchers will compare adequate sleep and restricted sleep to see if muscle strength and posture are affected.
Hypothesis: Kiwifruit contains antioxidants and serotonin which may be beneficial in the treatment of sleep disruption. Aim: to assess the effects of daily intake of kiwifruit on sleep quality, fatigue, and BMI among Saudi adults with poor sleep quality. Methods: Twenty-six female participants (14 cases, and 12 controls) were included. All participants were aged ≥18 years and were Saudi and had poor sleep quality. Pregnant, lactating and participants with any chronic diseases such as cardiovascular or neurological diseases, and history of using herbal or medications for inducing sleep for the last two months were excluded. Participants in the case group consumed 2 kiwifruits 1 hour before bedtime nightly for 6 weeks and the control group did not consume kiwifruit. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was used to assess sleep quality before and after kiwi consumption (score ≥ 5 indicates poor sleep quality), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) was used to assess fatigue and anthropometrics were measured based on the WHO guidelines. After 6 weeks, sleep quality, fatigue and BMI were compared between cases and controls. Kiwifruit consumption may improve sleep quality in adults with self-reported poor sleep quality. Further investigation of the sleep promoting properties of kiwifruit is required.
Poor sleep is common among college students and likely contributes to stress. The investigators developed a brief, remotely-delivered intervention and tested whether it improves sleep hygiene and reduced sleep disturbance and stress among undergraduates.
The investigators propose to examine the potential effects of the Frequen- ZZZ sleep pad - a noninvasive, unobtrusive appliance that generates a localized low-level electromagnetic field via radiofrequency, and that is used on the bed - on multiple sleep outcomes in an 8-week randomized crossover study, and to calculate the effect sizes of the intervention to inform power and sample size for future studies.
