Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine whether Eplerenone reduces atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrences within the first 8 weeks after electrical cardioversion of persistent AF.
The purpose of this study is to determine a dose of the investigational drug betahistine dihydrochloride that is both well tolerated and potentially effective in treating the symptoms of atypical depression. Atypical depression is characterized by the ability of the person's mood to improve temporarily in response to positive events, as well as features such as increased appetite, increased sleep and severe fatigue.
There is increasing evidence that worsening of ulcerative colitis (UC) can be provoked by psychological stresses. When this protocol was devised, there had been no proper scientific studies to find out whether stress reduction can improve the course of UC. Hypnotherapy is a technique by which a practitioner induces a temporary trance-like state in patients: while they are in this state, the practitioner uses suggestion to induce relaxation as well as beneficial modification of the way in which the patient experiences the gut working. In previous studies in our lab, we have shown that a single 50 minute session of hypnosis can reduce special indicators of inflammation both in the blood-stream and in the lining of the lower bowel (rectum). Furthermore, in earlier work by others, hypnosis had been shown to be effective in the treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, duodenal ulcer and indigestion unassociated with ulcers. Many patients with UC need to take the immunosuppressive drug, azathioprine, in addition to a 5ASA drug, to keep their disease under control. While azathioprine is usually effective in maintaining remission of UC, it does require regular drug checks and carries the risk of possible side-effects. We undertook a study of hypnotherapy to see whether it can prevent relapse (worsening) of UC in patients who normally need to take azathioprine to keep their UC inactive. To do this, we planned to ask 66 patients who agreed to participate in the trial to stop their azathioprine. They were then to be allocated to receive either gut-focussed hypnotherapy (44 patients) or, as a control, non-emotive educational sessions (22 patients) once a month for 3 months, with intervening self-hypnosis daily in the active arm. The numbers of patients in each group who developed relapse of their UC in a year were recorded. We diagnosed relapse from patients' diaries recording diarrhoea and bleeding, and by sigmoidoscopy. It was hoped that this clinical trial would identify a new drug-free way of reducing the chances of relapse in patients with UC.
RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy drugs, such as busulfan and etoposide, and intensity-modulated radiation therapy before a donor stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cancer cells. It also helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can make an immune response against the body's normal cells. Giving intensity-modulated radiation therapy together with busulfan and etoposide before a transplant may stop this from happening. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects and best dose of intensity-modulated radiation therapy when given together with busulfan and etoposide followed by a donor stem cell transplant and to see how well it works in treating patients with advanced myeloid cancer.
To investigate whether Betadine can reduce infection rates and recurrence rates following varicose veins surgery in a randomized double blind placebo controlled study.
Besides liver transplantation, the curative treatment of primary hepatic cancer with cirrhosis remains the surgical resection. Radiofrequency or cryotherapy currently allow local ablation of small cancer, with very good results. However, all these treatments are followed by high rates of recurrence (50 - 70% at 5 years). Then, it seems essential to associate to the surgical resection or to the local ablation as "adjuvant" treatment, in order to prevent or to decrease the rate of recurrence. However, no evidence supports this attitude. Therefore, following curative treatment of primary hepatic cancer with cirrhosis, we propose to compare treated to untreated patients. Postoperative treatment means either intra-arterial chemotherapy or systemic chemotherapy. The main criterion of the study is time of survival without recurrence. The main secondary objective is the safety.
The purpose of this study is to determine the superiority of inhibitory effects and safety of Menatetrenone (E0167) on recurrence in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
This phase II trial studies the side effects and best dose of iodine I 131 monoclonal antibody BC8 when given together with fludarabine phosphate, total-body irradiation, and donor stem cell transplant followed by cyclosporine and mycophenolate mofetil in treating patients with acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome that has spread to other places in the body and usually cannot be cured or controlled with treatment. Giving chemotherapy drugs, such as fludarabine phosphate, and total-body irradiation before a donor peripheral blood stem cell transplant helps stop the growth of cancer or abnormal cells and helps stop the patient's immune system from rejecting the donor's stem cells. Also, radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies, such as iodine I 131 monoclonal antibody BC8, can find cancer cells and carry cancer-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. When the healthy stem cells from a donor are infused into the patient they may help the patient's bone marrow make stem cells, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Sometimes the transplanted cells from a donor can make an immune response against the body's normal cells. Giving fludarabine phosphate and total-body irradiation before the transplant together with cyclosporine and mycophenolate mofetil after the transplant may stop this from happening. Giving a radiolabeled monoclonal antibody together with donor stem cell transplant, cyclosporine, and mycophenolate mofetil may be an effective treatment for advanced acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes.
This study is designed as a Phase II/III, multi-center trial, comparing two transplant strategies to determine whether non-myeloablative allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) will improve long-term progression-free survival compared to autologous HSCT. Recipients will be biologically assigned to the appropriate treatment arm depending on the availability of a Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) matched sibling.
RATIONALE: Testosterone can stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells. Hormone therapy using leuprolide and flutamide may fight prostate cancer by reducing the production of testosterone. It is not yet known whether receiving leuprolide and flutamide is more effective than receiving no further therapy. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of hormone therapy in treating patients who have stage I or stage II prostate cancer that is at high risk of recurrence and who have already undergone surgery.
