Filter by:The purpose of the current study is to investigate whether alleviation of OSA by CPAP positively impacts glucose metabolism in non-diabetic patients.
Time restricted eating (TRE) is currently the most popular form of intermittent fasting which involves confining the eating window to 8-10 hours (h) and fasting for the remaining hours of the day. TRE is unique in that during the eating window, individuals are not required to count calories or monitor food intake in any way, resulting in high adherence. Accumulating evidence suggests that TRE produces a natural energy deficit of ~350-500 kcal/d. Physical activity in combination with a healthy diet pattern is recommended for older adults. While aerobic type exercise is the most commonly recommended, retention of lean mass via resistance training, especially in older adults, may be more effective at improving mobility, neurological and psychological function, executive and cognitive functioning, and processing speed. TRE combined with physical activity has not been examined in older adults or in people with overweight or obesity. This study holds the potential to 1) decrease body weight 2) improve lean mass 3) improve insulin sensitivity, and 4) improve attention, executive functioning, and processing speed in older adults. The aims of this study will examine the effect of TRE combined with either resistance training or aerobic training on body weight, body composition, metabolic disease risk, and cognition in adults over age 50. It is hypothesized that the TRE combined with resistance training group will see the most significant improvements in body composition, insulin sensitivity and cognition due to lean mass accretion.

This study will investigate whether changes in the intestinal microbiota generated through a nutritional strategy based on functional foods, modifies postprandial glycemic responses in subjects with prediabetes and obesity, which in turn will generate a personalized dietary intervention through a prediction of postprandial blood glucose levels.
The goal of the proposed study is to evaluate the feasibility and initial efficacy of stabilizing lifestyle behaviors to improve glucose control and body composition in patients with pre-diabetes. The investigator proposes that following stable lifestyle behaviors will improve patients' glucose control, body composition, and liver fat. The results from this study has the potential to impact clinical practice and patient care.
People with liver disease report difficulties with attention and problem-solving skills. Diet plays an important role in the development of liver disease and/or pre-diabetes. The purpose of this study is to examine whether participation in a brief diet intervention (up to 3 weeks) can improve brain and liver health and function.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of providing healthy foods and nutrition education on participants' body weight, blood pressure, and average blood sugar level. The healthy food offerings tested in this study will help determine which option is best to improve health outcomes among Cleveland Clinic Akron General patients with chronic conditions. Findings from this study could guide doctors in deciding on appropriate nutrition and dietitian services for Cleveland Clinic patients.
Over 24 million Americans are over 65 years and have prediabetes. Prediabetes can be addressed using a public health approach: among the 20% of participants in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) who were ages 60 and over, the diet and physical activity intervention conferred a 71% risk reduction of diabetes after an average follow-up of 3 years. The population of older adults is projected to more than double from 52.5 million in 2019 to ~100 million by 2060, and if projections hold, about half (48.3%) will have prediabetes. The proposed hybrid effectiveness implementation type 1 design will compare a DPP program Tailored for Older Adults and delivered via Telehealth (DPP-TOAT arm) to an in person DPP tailored for older adults (DPP arm) using a randomized, controlled trial design (n=230). The preliminary data suggests DPP-TOAT is a feasible and acceptable way to deliver the DPP to older adults, and this will be the first study to compare the effectiveness and implementation of two strategies (telehealth versus in-person) to deliver a tailored DPP for the unique needs of the growing population of older adults.
In this pilot trial participants will be randomized 1:1 to participate in either standard Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) vs. DPP plus a novel cooking skills intervention (DPP Cooks). The researchers hypothesize that participants randomized to DPP Cooks will have greater weight loss, better diet quality at 4 months, and greater confidence in their cooking skills and ability to implement dietary changes recommended in the DPP.
Metabolic syndrome and resulting downstream health effects remains a growing health concern. In published trials, the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) assists behavioral changes efforts, leading to improved adherence and results from diet and exercise changes in individuals with obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes. Mobile health (mHealth) platforms provide satisfactory, easy-to-use tools that help participants in the pursuit of weight change goals. We hypothesize that the use of CGM data and targeted coaching and nutrition education will assist with weight optimization goals in the general (non-diabetic) population using the Signos mHealth platform, with associated health benefits.
