Filter by:The primary aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of incorporating manually adjustable sit-stand desks in the classroom environment of 9-10 year olds in reducing sedentary behaviour at school during a full school year. Secondary aims include evaluating the effects of the intervention on health and learning outcomes as well as comparing the impact of full classroom allocation of sit-stand desks to a classroom of partial sit-stand desk allocation.
Recommendation is strong on physical activity (PA) in the prehabilitation of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) for various types of surgeries. The evidence is however weak regarding ERAS protocols. Many studies have showed that physical exercise and PA have hypoalgesic effects on healthy individuals and they have better pain tolerance too. Here the investigators study changes in postoperative pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting for various types of surgical patients after performing preoperative PA at moderate or vigorous intensity Vs non-preoperative PA patients.
Practical interventions are needed to increase physical activity (PA) levels in insufficiently active individuals. HEAT is a randomized controlled trial comparing two different exercise prescription (ExRx) methods to increase PA volume among insufficiently active UConn students. Students will be randomized to two groups: (1) ExRx#1 will emphasize meeting the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans via the Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type or FITT principle of ExRx; and (2) ExRx#2 will be founded in the Integrated Behavior Change Theory and based on the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Review Committee Scientific Report heat map which emphasizes that all PA counts. HEAT aims to assess the effectiveness of each ExRx individually and comparatively to one another for each outcome measure. We hypothesize that UConn students in ExRx#2 will increase PA volume more than ExRx#1 in response to the 12wk ExRx due to its foundation in the IBC. If our hypothesis proves correct we aim to inform healthcare providers on university campuses on which method of ExRx is more effective at increasing PA participation among their insufficiently active students.
The purpose of this community-engaged project is to examine how taking part in different arts (dance & music), compared to control (no arts) affects older adults' Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL using the Short Form-20(SF) form), physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery-SPPB), cognition (using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-MoCA), social engagement (National Social Life, Health, & Aging Project-NSHAP survey), and perceptions of self (focus interviews).
Many breast and endometrial cancer survivors do not get enough physical activity. Technology-based interventions can be inexpensive and easy to scale up, however they are not effective for all women. The purpose of this study is test an adaptive physical activity intervention approach that reserves the most resources and support for women who do not fare well with a lower-cost, minimal intervention. The results from this trial will inform the development of scalable physical activity interventions for breast and endometrial cancer survivors.
Breast cancer survivors, from diagnosis until the end of life, go through many transitions. One major transition is the significant decrease of physical activity immediately after diagnosis. Despite the known benefits of physical activity-speeding recovery time and reduced cancer recurrence risk-only 1 in 3 survivors met physical activity recommendations of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. Physical activity interventions have shown effectiveness in helping breast cancer survivors increase physical activity during treatment, but limited evidence-based physical activity interventions have been incorporated into the clinic and community. To address this limitation, the investigators are partnering with the UTMB breast cancer support group to conduct a 12-week physical activity intervention, Pink Warrior. The goal of this study is to compare an intervention that uses active games versus an intervention uses pedometer to encourage physical activity such as walking within breast cancer survivors in active cancer treatment. The study will include breast cancer survivor between the ages of 18 - 70 whom currently gets less than 150 minutes of planned physical activity per week and received a breast cancer diagnosis within 0 to 6 months. Participants will be randomized to participate in the support group using the active video game-based physical activity intervention (Wii and Xbox active games) or to participate in the existing UTMB breast cancer support group with pedometers (Digi-Walker CW-700/701). The investigators hypothesize that by engaging in active video gaming, breast cancer survivors will be motivated to initiate and maintain physical activity during treatment. This will ultimately increase functional capacity and prevent functional disability in breast cancer survivors.
A negative body image negatively affects the total health of students and the quality of life in University students. Body image and the experience of body appearance pressure have not been investigated previously among the Norwegian student population. It is reasonable to suggest that sport science students experience an increased pressure to have an athletic body to be able to identify as a sport science student and for future job opportunities. Such pressure would negatively influence students' attitudes and practice as future communicators of lifestyle knowledge after completing their studies. Objective: The study objective is to assess body image and body appearance pressure among Norwegian University students, and to investigate differences between different academic disciplines and gender. The study uses a cross-sectional design with a questionnaire to measure outcomes in male and female students in Norway.
Approximately 75% of cancer survivors experience some degree of cognitive deficit throughout their cancer experience, with upwards of one third of breast cancer survivors reporting impairments up to a decade after treatment. Chemotherapy and adjuvant therapy to remove cancerous tissue can result in deficits in attention, speed of processing, memory, and quality of life. Physical activity has been associated with a number of health benefits for breast cancer survivors including improvements in cognitive function. The investigators recently reported on the beneficial effects of acute exercise, or single sessions of physical activity, on processing speed and spatial working memory in breast cancer survivors, suggesting that acute bouts of physical activity may mitigate select domains of CRCI. Specifically, survivors in this study demonstrated faster processing speed, and trended towards faster and more accurate spatial working memory, after thirty minutes of moderate-intensity walking compared to seated rest. But half an hour of walking may be challenging to certain subgroups of survivors, particularly those who are deconditioned or with significant barriers to longer walks. With a renewed focus on un-bouted physical activity and avoiding inactivity during survivorship, it is important to better understand the dose or volume of exercise responsible for providing breast cancer survivors with the greatest cognitive benefits. The investigators examined the effects of varying durations of exercise (e.g., 10, 20 and 30 minutes) on cognitive function in breast cancer survivors to identify the optimal length of acute exercise. Findings from this study will inform new guidelines for acute exercise after cancer.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) compose a substantial proportion of the global burden of diseases, posing a significant challenge in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries. In particular, certain lifestyle-related risk factors, such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and sleep deprivation are the leading risk factors, which place people at an increased risk of developing NCDs. On the other hand, a growing phenomenon of excessive concern about diet and health is emerging, and it is contributing to the development of a novel eating behavior disorder named orthorexia nervosa. According to recent studies, orthorexic behavior is very common among young adults and especially so in health-care professionals. The main objective of this multi-center study is to explore and compare lifestyle habits among undergraduate medical students and other healthcare-related professions from different countries (Croatia, Lebanon, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Turkey). The goal is to obtain information on the presence of unhealthy habits in order to be able to intervene, offering the information needed for primordial disease prevention in this young and still healthy group of respondents, who are the health educators and role models of the future. The particular importance of this goal is to raise awareness of the problem of the ubiquitously present unhealthy lifestyles. Unfortunately, health-care students are not the exception regarding the prevalence of the unhealthy diet, sedentary behavior, sleep deprivation and high levels of psychological stress. Furthermore, the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle patterns in health-care workers, such as doctors and nurses, will have far-reaching negative consequences, in both their health and their patients' health. The results of this study will be used for identifying the needs and targets for intervention, enabling students to become a pillar of health education for their patients and the population in general.
Compared to non-smokers, smokers are significantly more likely to also engage in other chronic disease-related risk behaviours; which can be a barrier to quitting successfully. Therefore a holistic approach is needed for smoking cessation treatment. The Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) program currently offers an online integrated care pathway (ICP) for addressing alcohol and mood as a part of smoking cessation treatment. Evidence also shows that smokers are also more likely to be physical inactive and not consume enough fruits/vegetables. These risk behaviours can further compound the negative health effects for smokers. However, it is remains unclear which and how many behaviours should be addressed simultaneously in smoking cessation treatment and what the impact on smoking cessation and care for STOP participants will be. Through this study, the investigators will seek to: 1. Determine whether the addition of an integrated care pathway for physical activity and fruits/vegetable consumption to the STOP program is associated with participants' quit prevalence at 6 month follow-up among STOP participants who are physically inactive and/or have low levels of fruits/vegetable consumption. 2. Understand how the integrated care pathway for physical activity and fruits/vegetable consumption is implemented in primary care settings. In the process, we hope to generate insights on how this ICP can be most helpful to organizations, staff and patients.
