The ABCs of SLEEPING: Effectiveness Study

This trial will examine the effectiveness of a mobile applicable intervention called the "ABCs of SLEEPING". This intervention provides parents with prioritized/customized sleep recommendations and a sleep report based on their responses to the "Sleep check-in". This app is evidence-based and developed by sleep researchers and its aim is to provide accessible evidence-based sleep information for parents of children aged 6 to 12 years of age.

Sleep Disturbances in Surgical Patients With GI Cancers: A Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis

The primary objective of the study is to determine sleep disturbance and its types among patients with gastrointestinal cancers during the perioperative period (preoperative and in-hospital stay following surgery) by using Richard Campbell sleep questionnaire (RCSQ). The primary objective of this study is to determine the SD during preoperative and post-operative periods evaluated by Richard Campbell Sleep questionnaire. Patients will be asked every 24 hours while at the hospital (before and after surgery) to fill out this questionnaire. The mean RCSQ score at each time point (i.e., before and after surgery) will be calculated for each patient. The overall mean (across all patients) will be calculated and reported along a 95% CI.

Effect of Night Float Call on Sleep and Activity Patterns Among Anesthesia Residents

With increasing awareness about physician fatigue and its effect on patient safety, residency programs are increasingly transitioning to a night float call system. In other industries, multiple night shifts in a row can cause a disruption in the circadian rhythm, sleep debt, shift work disorder, that is related to chronic medical conditions such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. We will evaluate the effect of different call structures on resident activity, sleep and self reported measures of wellness using a commercially available Fitbit device.

Cannabinoids as a Treatment for Insomnia in Major Depression

This single-site study is a pilot, three-armed, double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized controlled trial (RCT) that will determine the feasibility of a definitive RCT investigating the use of cannabis oil as a treatment for insomnia in individuals with MDD. The study will also determine whether standard THC with higher CBD vs lower CBD has a differential impact on insomnia. The study will also analyze other important objective parameters of sleep including total sleep time and sleep efficiency from actigraphy data. Polysomnography data will also be analyzed. In addition, standardized, validated instruments will be used to collect data on severity of depressive symptoms, cognitive functioning biological rhythm disruption, daytime sleepiness, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), healthcare resource utilization, work productivity and activity impairment, as well as other side effects, in order to better understand the potential impact of the use of cannabis oil on these important health outcomes.

Human Centric Lighting to Improve Patient Sleep Parameters

Human centric lighting (HCL) is a technology that supports the body's circadian rhythm, as it can stimulate the sleep triggering hormone, melatonin, to improve sleep hygiene over standard lighting (SL), and promote recuperative sleep for a timely return-to-duty. In intensive care units, exposure to HCL has improved sleep measures. However, the effect in the medical surgical (MS) environment is unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of study procedures in MS setting and conduct a preliminary evaluation of the effect of light on inpatient sleep. Recruitment started November 2020 through April 2021. Data analysis is pending.

CBT-I for Sleep, Pain, and Inflammation in Crohn's Disease

People with Crohn's disease often suffer from sleep problems. Long term, sleep problems may lead to more flares of Crohn's disease or other complications. In general, people with Crohn's disease also report that sleep problems can worsen symptoms of Crohn's disease the next day. In people with other medical problems, research has also shown that having sleep problems can make other things worse, such as pain and inflammation. In this study, the researchers want to understand the treatment of sleep problems in people with Crohn's disease, and what else might improve if sleep gets better. This study will use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) to treat insomnia symptoms. CBT-I is the recommended treatment for insomnia and has been shown to improve sleep problems, pain, and inflammation in other groups of people. If this study is successful, it will contribute to understanding how to treat insomnia in people with Crohn's disease and how sleep impacts pain and inflammation. Long term, this information will be helpful in understanding how best to take care of people with Crohn's disease.
