Filter by:This is an experimental study protocol to investigate the use of vision-based assessments like eye-tracking and visual processing tests to evaluate driving ability in older adults with and without dementia. The study aims to address the research gap on the specific eye movement patterns and visual behaviors of individuals with Alzheimer's disease during high-risk driving scenarios. The study will recruit 15 participants aged 65+ with cognitive impairment and 15 without cognitive impairment. Their cognitive status will be assessed using the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) and Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT). Participants will undergo visual screening tests like visual sensitivity, eye movement scanning, and the Corsi block span test. Their driving performance will be evaluated through a hazard perception test and driving experience survey. Statistical analyses like correlations, group comparisons, regression, and mediation analyses will be conducted to examine the relationships between cognitive status, visual screening scores, and driving performance scores. The goal is to determine if visual measures can predict driving ability and mediate the link between cognitive function and driving performance in those with dementia. In summary, it is a protocol for an observational study using vision-based techniques to assess driving capacity in older adults, especially those with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
The purpose of this study is to explore how performing two exercise-based tasks simultaneously (dual-task exercise) affects the neurovascular and cognitive responses of people with cognitive impairment, which is a growing concern globally. Specifically, the study will examine how motor-cognitive dual-task exercises, such as using elastic resistance bands combined with visual perception training, including eye movement exercises, can immediately improve outcomes such as Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, cerebral blood flow, cognitive function, and mobility. BDNF is a special chemical in our brain that helps with the connections between brain cells. Participants will be asked to complete a single 30-minute exercise session and undergo assessments before and after the intervention. Participants with cognitive impairment will be initially assessed using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) which is a 30-point questionnaire used extensively in clinical and research settings to measure cognitive impairment. Any score of 24 or more (out of 30) indicates normal cognition. Below this, scores can indicate severe (≤9 points), moderate (10-18 points), or mild (19-23 points) cognitive impairment. Participants with lower MMSE scores (<10) will be removed from the study.
The goal of this pilot study is to evaluate the feasibility of integrating neural mobilization techniques into a multimodal physical exercise program for older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain. The main questions it aims to answer are: - What is the average time to assess secondary outcomes for each participant? - What proportion of participants adhered and/or withdrew from the study at the end of the intervention protocol? - Are there adverse events/effects associated with the intervention protocol? - What is the level of approval/satisfaction of the participants in relation to the assessment and intervention protocols? - What is the impact of the intervention protocol on participants´ pain, function, physical performance, somatosensory function, and nerve excursion (secondary outcomes)? Participants will be assessed at 3 different moments: initial assessment (T0), at the end of the intervention protocol (8 weeks) (T1) and 3 months after the end of the intervention protocol (T2). The intervention protocol will consist of a multimodal exercise program (with or without integration of neural mobilization techniques) to be carried out over a period of 8 weeks at a frequency of twice a week.
This study is a field trial where "Komp" is implemented and tested as part of Oslo Municipality's home care services for older adults. Komp is a "one button" communication device designed specifically for older adults who are unfamiliar with or struggle to use conventional digital technologies such as smart phones, computers, or tablets. The aim of the trial is to study the effects of increased social contact with family and care services via Komp. In a randomized design, 300 Komp units will be offered to a sample of older municipal home care service recipients. By comparing the intervention group (who are offered to test Komp for free) with the control group (who receive services as usual), the study will uncover if, on average, users of Komp 1) can live longer at home than non-users, 2) have lesser need of home care services, and 3) are happier, safer, and more socially connected.
The study is a multicentre Proof-of-Concept. The general objective of the e-VITA project is to develop a personalized virtual coach capable of interacting with its elderly interlocutor. The experimentation will be carried out in 4 sites: Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

This research study explores the effects of movement pattern training using real-time biofeedback insoles after total knee arthroplasty. The purpose of this research study is to determine if the addition of a novel movement pattern training program (MOVE) to contemporary progressive rehabilitation leads to improved movement quality and physical function compared to contemporary progressive rehabilitation (CONTROL) alone.
Many individuals with mobility limitations, especially those who are older and have more severe impairments, use a combination of assistive devices and personal assistance to meet their needs. Assistive technology (AT), which includes devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, bathroom grab bars, and dressing aids, helps facilitate day-to-day activities and social participation (basic and instrumental activities of daily living) among these individuals and may decrease their dependence on human assistance. Although some research has reported beneficial outcomes of AT use, few studies have used controlled experimental designs. Furthermore, the results are often difficult to interpret because the AT interventions are only vaguely described. Another concern is that many individuals receive help from others, but scant attention has been paid to the impact of AT on caregivers. This neglect produces an incomplete portrayal of the effect of AT interventions. The proposed study addresses these deficiencies by evaluating the effects of a formalized dyadic AT intervention on individuals with mobility limitations and on their caregivers. The Assistive Technology Provision, Updating and Training (ATPUT)intervention involves a detailed in-home assessment of participants' current AT; the negotiation and implementation of a personal AT plan with the participants and their caregivers; and the provision of AT devices, non-structural home modifications, and device training. Objectives: 1. To determine the efficacy of the Assistive Technology Provision, Updating and Training intervention for assistance users and for their caregivers. 2. To explore how the intervention is experienced by these individuals and to help explain the study findings. General Hypotheses: The investigators anticipate this intervention will increase the daily activities and social participation of individuals with mobility limitations; decrease the psychological and physical demands on caregivers; and reduce the amount of caregiving required. Methodologies: This research will use a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative portion will be an experimental, single-blinded study in which the investigators randomly assign participants to either the ATPUT or a customary care group.
