Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world adopted the practice of physical distancing, which increased the loneliness experienced by seniors and indirectly affected their quality of life and social support. Remote interaction through online social apps may be the safest and easiest way to address these problems. However, the empirical research on this issue is very limited. Objective: This study investigated the impact of a 12-week remote interaction intervention on loneliness, quality of life, and social support for seniors living in a community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study adopted a randomized controlled trial design and was conducted in communities in central Taiwan. Participants in the intervention group received a 12-week bidirectional remote interaction intervention, while participants in the control group received a 12-week unidirectional remote interaction intervention. The study's primary assessment tools were the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Scale (WHOQOL-BREF). The secondary assessment tool was the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behavior.
Older adults are susceptible to intestinal tumors. Colonoscopy can screen colorectal cancer, adenoma and other diseases. There is a large demand for colonoscopy in the older adults, and the risk during peri-colonoscopy period is high. According to the common intestinal preparation methods and the characteristics of the older adults, the investigators propose a modified method, that is single administration of low dose polyethylene glycol (PEG). Specifically, take 30ml lactulose in the morning 1 day before the examination, and eat without residue in lunch and dinner, Take 2L PEG in the morning of the examination day and fast at breakfast and lunch of the day. Taking 4L PEG in 2 days as the control group. The fasting and diarrhea period is shorter in the modified group than that in the control group, and the dose of PEG is less. Lactulose, a laxative, is taken one day before the examination, and the intestinal preparation time is longer than that of single administration. The situation of comfort, sleep and fecal incontinence during the intestinal preparation of the two groups will be compared. The results of electrolyte, blood glucose and B-type brain natriuretic peptide between the two groups will be also compared. The effect of intestinal preparation will be evaluated by the standardization of Boston intestinal preparation scale, and endoscopist blind method will be used in colonoscopy.
The investigators aim to conduct a fully powered randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of two symptom management programs for older adults with early cognitive decline (either self-reported or confirmed by testing) and chronic pain, Active Brains 1 and Active Brains 2. The investigators will assess how each program may help in improving multimodal physical, cognitive and emotional function. The investigators will also assess whether improvements in outcomes from the two programs are maintained through 6-months follow-up. The investigators will also explore whether improvements in outcomes are mediated by nonadaptive pain reactions, adaptive coping, social factors and compensatory strategies and modified by demographic and clinical predictors. Both programs will be delivered virtually (Zoom).
This study aims to examine 1) if multicomponent exercise interventions (including both mobility and strengthening exercises) have effects on physical function compared to usual care in older adults, and 2) if a comprehensive multicomponent exercise program is more effective than a simple multicomponent exercise program including only walking and rising from a chair.
The PROFIT study has two complementary aims. The first aim is to compare, in a cohort study enrolling N=257 older adults (>65 years) with lung, gastrointestinal and prostate cancer, different easy measures of frailty (Geriatric 8 questionnaire (G8), Short physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and the IF-VIG), testing their ability to predict survival, functional status (ECOG, Barthel Index), quality of life (EuroQol5D) and resources utilization (visits, hospital admissions, treatments) at 3, 6 and 12 months. The second aim, which motivates the registration in ClinicalTrials.gov, is to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) enrolling N=134 patients per group, with similar characteristics to those enrolled for aim 1, but with mild-moderate frailty (G8≤14 points); we will compare a multi-component CGA-based intervention including physical exercise and nutritional recommendations with usual care, measuring the impact on the same outcomes as for aim 1, at 3 and 6 months. The use of ad hoc eHealth solutions (App/platform for exercise) will foster patients' empowerment and sustainability of the intervention. We will also assess patients, caregivers, and professionals' experience with the intervention through focus groups. Participants will be recruited from outpatients and from post-acute care units.
Virtual reality (VR) allows users to interact within a simulated environment using electronic devices such as a VR headset or goggles. Multiple studies with younger adults have demonstrated that VR meditation can be an important tool in reducing stress, however, this has not been studied in older adults. In this study, the investigators aim to assess the effects of a 4-week program of 15-minutes sessions, twice per week of meditation delivered through VR with the aim of evaluating its impact on stress in older adults.
Falls are common in older adults and may lead to disability or even death. Therefore, exercise programs that focus on preventing falls by improving strength and balance are important to investigate in older adults. One of the home-based exercise programs that was found effective in reducing the risk of falling and the rate of subsequent falls in older adults is the Otago exercise program (OEP). The OEP is an individualized home based retraining program that works mainly on balance and lower extremity strength through several progressive resistive exercises. Therefore, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of this program on falls prevention and falls-related outcomes using a Randomized Controlled Trial in a sample of Jordanian older adults.
