Motivational Interviewing to Enhance Advance Care Planning for Older Adults and Caregivers After Emergency Visits

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational interviewing (MI) intervention in enhancing advance care planning (ACP) among older adults who have visited the Emergency Room (ER) in the past six months and their family caregivers. The main question it aims to answer is: The effectiveness of the MI-based ACP intervention implemented within six months of an ER visit on improving older adults' advance directives (AD) completion rate. Compared to participants in the control group who will only receive a self-education booklet, participants in the intervention group will receive a motivational interview educational intervention to see the effectiveness of an MI-based ACP intervention implemented within six months following an emergency room visit regarding the completion of AD for older adults.

Core Stabilization Exercise Therapy in Chronic Lower Back Back Management in Community Dwelling Older Adults

Objectives: To develop an exercise program for older adults with low back pain. And,to develop a clinical prediction rule that could identify a subgroup of people with NSLBP Participants: 150 people aged between 40 to 80 with non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) for more than 6 months and is able to ambulate independently will be invited to join the study. People who had 1) previous spinal surgery; 2) LBP attributable to current pregnancy; 3) acute fracture, recent fall, tumour, or bone infection; and 4) experience of practising core-stability exercises in the past 6 months will be excluded. Study details will be explained to participants and written consent will be obtained prior the study. 75 participants will be randomized into the intervention group. Another 75 participants will be randomized into the waiting list control group. Assessment Participants will undergo two comprehensive assessments before and after the training, which includes: Surface electromyogram (EMG) on the lumbar spine and abdominal muscle, Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor for trunk movement, clinical assessment including. Prone instability test. Subjective assessments: Visual analogue scale score for pain, The Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire and Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire. Intervention - 16 session structured exercise program All participants will undergo a 16 session exercise program for 2 months. Each session will last for 60minutes. The exercise program will be arranged in a group format with class size ranging from 6 - 8 per class Subjects will be divided into experimental and control groups. Participants in the control group will not receive exercise training at first but were evaluated at the same time as participants in the experimental group. The participant in the control group completed the exercise training after the post-assessment.

An Intervention Integrating Physical Therapy Exercise and Dance Movement Therapy for Preventing Falls in Older Adults

The goal of this study is to construct and assess a theoretical and interventional model for preventing falls in older adults that integrates physiotherapy exercise and dance movement therapy. The main questions this study aims to answer are: 1. What is the effect on reducing fall risk in older adults of a group intervention focused solely on physical exercises, compared to a similar intervention that incorporates emotional content through dance movement therapy, and compared to a group that receives no intervention? 2. What are the factors of change in an intervention that integrates physical exercises and emotional content? 3. Is there a correlation between the outcome variables and the process variables in the study? Researchers will compare: (1) an intervention group that integrates physical therapy exercises (PTE) and dance movement therapy (DMT), (2) a PTE control group, and (3) a control group without intervention, to examine the effects on: (1) physical, (2) emotional, and (3) adherence to treatment.

Exercise Training, Cognition, and Mobility in Older Adults With Multiple Sclerosis

The overall objective of the proposed randomized controlled (RCT) is to determine the feasibility and efficacy of a 16-week theory-based, remotely-delivered, combined exercise (aerobic and resistance) training intervention for improving cognitive and physical function in older adults (50+ years) with multiple sclerosis (MS) who have mild-to-moderate cognitive and walking impairment. Participants (N=50) will be randomly assigned into exercise training (combined aerobic and resistance exercise) condition or active control (flexibility and stretching) condition. The 16-week intervention will be delivered and monitored remotely within a participant's home/community and supported by Zoom-based chats guided by social cognitive theory (SCT) via a behavioral coach. Participants will receive training materials (e.g., prescriptive manual and exercise equipment), one-on-one coaching, action-planning via calendars, self-monitoring via logs, and SCT-based newsletters. It is hypothesized that the home-based exercise intervention will yield beneficial effects on cognition, mobility, physical activity, and vascular function compared with an active control condition (flexibility and stretching intervention), and these improvements will be sustained during a 16-week follow-up period.

Effectiveness of a Communication Device in Home Care Services in Norway: Does Komp Make Older Adults Feel Happier, Safer and More Connected, and Able to Live Longer at Home.

This study is a field trial where "Komp" is implemented and tested as part of Oslo Municipality's home care services for older adults. Komp is a "one button" communication device designed specifically for older adults who are unfamiliar with or struggle to use conventional digital technologies such as smart phones, computers, or tablets. The aim of the trial is to study the effects of increased social contact with family and care services via Komp. In a randomized design, 300 Komp units will be offered to a sample of older municipal home care service recipients. By comparing the intervention group (who are offered to test Komp for free) with the control group (who receive services as usual), the study will uncover if, on average, users of Komp 1) can live longer at home than non-users, 2) have lesser need of home care services, and 3) are happier, safer, and more socially connected.

Transition in Care From Post-acute Services for the Elderly in Quebec

An early discharge of frail elderly individuals from post-acute care services may lead to a decline in their ability to perform daily activities and cause social, emotional, and psychological distress. Montreal West Island Integrated University Health and Social Services Center in Quebec implemented a pilot program called Post-Acute Home Physiotherapy (PAHP) to address this concern. This program aimed to provide a timely and intense out-patient physiotherapy service to ensure maintenance and optimization of the physical capacities acquired in post-acute care and also to contribute acceleration of the turnover of rehabilitation beds. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the PAHP program on the functional independence, physical and mental health of elderly individuals, as well as their safety. Additionally, it aimed to identify the healthcare needs, both physical and psychological, of elderly individuals after their discharge from post-acute care services.
