Start date: October 10, 2019
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Maintaining good oral health is essential for general health and quality of life. Results of many anal-yses showed that stroke patients had poorer oral condition and worse periodontal status than control population. The aim of the study was to carry out a clinical observation concerning condition of oral health in stroke patients and healthy population. The oral health was assessed in patients with stroke and in (control group). The following elements were assessed: missing teeth, the presence of active caries foci, the presence of existing fillings and prosthetic restorations. To assess oral hygiene API (Approximal Plaque Index) was used. As part of periodontal examina-tion, the following were assessed: the presence of dental deposits, the depth of the existing periodontal pockets, tooth mobility according to Hall and Sulcus Bleeding Index during probing (SBI).

In a crossover, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study, 40 volunteers will receive the following formulations: hydrogels containing LAs (local anesthetic) - lidocaine and prilocaine (both at 2.5%) encapsulated in CLN (XAN-CLN) or not (XAN-CLN ), EMLA (topical anesthetic available on the market) and placebo hydrogel. The formulations will be applied for 2 minutes, bilaterally on the palatal mucosa (first premolar region), in two distinct sessions. Soon after removal of the topical formulation, an AL will be performed at the region using 0.3 mL of anesthetic solution at an injection speed of 1 mL/min. Pain resulting from needle insertion and LA injection will be measured using two visual analog scales (VAS).

NCT ID: NCT05853679 Completed - Dental Plaque Clinical Trials

Regular Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy on Oral Hygiene in Elderly Residents

Start date: September 1, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Around 40 people will participate in the study. The study participants will be recruited from service homes in the City of Helsinki. The subjects will be randomized into two groups. One of the groups will receive daily photodynamic Lumoral treatment for 2 months in a home care unit according to a separate instruction manual. At the beginning of the study, all subjects will receive an oral cleaning and will also be provided with electric toothbrushes. In addition, residents and care home personnel will be instructed on daily tooth cleaning. During the study, all participants will undergo clinical measurements and an assessment of the oral inflammatory load. The samples will be stored for later analysis. In addition, residents or care home personnel answer questions about oral self-care. These measurements and examinations will be carried out at the start of the study and two months after the start of the study. After the end of the study, participants will continue to be treated according to their usual care and individual care plan.

NCT ID: NCT05787600 Completed - Clinical trials for Periodontal Diseases

NCT ID: NCT05418335 Completed - Stroke Clinical Trials

Oral Health and Vitamin D in Stroke Patients

Start date: July 12, 2022
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Stroke is a common, serious and restrictive global health problem. Restricting the activities of daily living of stroke patients impairs patients' ability to pay attention to oral hygiene. Facial paresis and tongue weakness due to stroke may cause a decrease in the control of dental prostheses and the removal of food residues in the oral cavity. Food residues and saliva contaminated with bacteria as a result of poor oral hygiene can result in pneumonia when aspirated due to oropharyngeal dysphagia. In the literature, it has been shown that there are significant relationships between periodontal health and vitamin D and calcium intake, and that dietary supplementation with calcium and vitamin D can improve periodontal health, increase bone mineral density in the mandible, and inhibit alveolar bone resorption. In line with all these data, our hypothesis in this study is to investigate the relationship between oral health and vitamin D levels in stroke patients in rehabilitation units.
