Filter by:Older adults have higher rates of emergency department admissions when compared to their younger counterparts. Mobility is the ability to move around but also encompasses the environment and the ability to adapt to it. Walking aids can be used to improve mobility and prevent falls. According to international guidelines, they must be available in Geriatric Emergency Department. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a program of training and provision of walking aids (WA), associated or not with telemonitoring, on mobility, quality of life, fear of falling, and risk of falls up to 3 months in older adults cared for in an emergency department.
The aim of this study is to investigate whether Graded Motor Imagery (GMI) application is as effective as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The objectives are to improve range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength, reduce pain and stiffness, increase pain pressure threshold, and enhance function and physical performance through GMI application.

Over 64 million people in the U.S. have a permanent disability, with mobility-related disability (MRD) representing the most prevalent disability type (13.7%). Adults with MRD are 66% more likely to be overweight or obese than their non-disabled peers. Exercise in adults with MRD is important for weight management and is associated with improvements in obesity-related health conditions including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, insulin processing/sensitivity, etc. However, over half (57%) of adults with MRD do not exercise, while 22% engage in exercise of insufficient duration or intensity to obtain health benefits. Adults with MRD face numerous barriers to participation in community-based exercise, and exercise is frequently limited to short-term referrals for outpatient physical and/or occupational therapy. High-intensity functional training (HIFT) represents a potentially effective strategy for community-based exercise to support body weight and obesity-related health conditions, in addition to improving physical function and aspects of psychosocial health for people with disabilities. Preliminary evidence supports the effectiveness of HIFT to improve body composition, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, insulin processing and insulin sensitivity in non-disabled adults who are overweight/obese. To date, no study has systematically evaluated the feasibility or effectiveness of a community-based HIFT intervention for improving obesity-related health outcomes in overweight/obese adults with MRD. Thus, the proposed study will implement a 6-mo. pilot trial to evaluate the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a HIFT intervention (60 min sessions/3 days/wk.) in 25 adults with MRD and overweight/obesity. This study will address the following aims: Aim 1: Evaluate the intervention feasibility based on participant recruitment, session attendance, retention, outcome assessment completion, and the results of semi-structured exit interviews to obtain information regarding experience and overall satisfaction with the intervention. Aim 2: Evaluate changes (baseline - 6 mos.) in weight and fat-mass/fat-free mass, and components of the metabolic syndrome (waist circumference, blood pressure, HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose).
Declines in cognitive function and walking function are highly intertwined in older adults. A therapeutic approach that combines complex (cognitively engaging) aerobic walking exercise with non-invasive electrical brain stimulation may be effective at restoring lost function. This study tests whether electrical stimulation of prefrontal brain regions is more beneficial than sham stimulation.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of using walking aid during out-of-bed mobilization of patients who underwent open coronary artery bypass graft surgery on levels of pain and mobility. The main hypotheses are: 1. The pain level of patients using walking aid is lower than that of those who do not. 2. The mobility level of patients using walking aid is higher than that of those who do not. Participants will be asked to walk with using a walking aid during the first three mobilizations in the intensive care unit on the first postoperative day.
Endometriosis is a frequent pathology with an estimated prevalence of 10% of women of childbearing age. There is no exact correspondence between the symptoms described by the patients and the severity of the lesions, which makes clinical diagnosis difficult. It therefore seems important to improve the complementary examinations available to make the diagnosis more precise and to better study the effectiveness of the treatments implemented. The clinical examination and per-surgical findings of patients with deep pelvic endometriosis show a clear decrease in the mobility of the pelvic organs in relation to each other, but few studies have looked at this mobility, which could however have an implication in explaining the pathophysiology of the disease and the symptomatology of the patients, as well as in the detection of lesions preoperatively. The persistence of hypo-mobility could also help to understand treatment failures.
In modern society with an increasing aging population, recent literature has defined sarcopenia as a significant reduced mass and function of skeletal muscle with physical limitations due to aging. Clinically and experimentally, the foot often plays a crucial role in sensorimotor control and movement performance in standing, walking, and running. Apparently, previous literature has shown that the intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscles have significantly reduced muscle morphology and muscle strength in the elderly compared to that of young healthy controls. How to effectively increase foot muscles using muscle-strengthening exercises will be a crucial issue for further research and clinical intervention in this population. The intrinsic foot muscles (IFM) are the primary local stabilizer to provide static and dynamic stability in the foot, which are part of the active and neural subsystems to constitute the foot core system. The intrinsic foot muscles (IFMs) may play a key role in supporting foot arches (e.g., the medial longitudinal arch, MLA), providing flexibility, stability, shock absorption to the foot, and partially controlling foot pronation. Due to the difficulties in teaching and learning the plantar intrinsic foot muscle (IFM) exercise, the accuracy and follow-up after learning this exercise could be questioned following this exercise program. Physiologically, the effects of integrated exercise intervention may be achieved following more than 4-week intensive exercise intervention at least. How to learn and activate this kind of exercise efficiently and effectively is a key issue for employing these exercise interventions in the elderly with and without sarcopenia. In this project, we will aim to employ the novel intrinsic foot muscle strengthening device using 3-D printing techniques and to examine the feasibility and reliability of the morphology in intrinsic and extrinsic foot muscles and foot posture before and after exercise intervention using sonographic imaging and foot posture index in the elderly with and without sarcopenia; second, we will investigate whether the immediate and persistent increase in balance control and level-walking after this therapeutic exercise with novel 3-D printing foot core exerciser.
The aim of our study is to objectively and clearly determine the differences between the Spasticity and Decreased Functionality in the Upper Extremity Flexor Group Muscles After Stroke, the Vibration, mBZHT and Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Applications in terms of treatment process and effectiveness, and to increase the use of the hands and upper extremities in the daily life activities of the patient.
Given the heightened vulnerability of COPD patients to severe illness upon SARS-CoV-2 infection, precautions like mask-wearing are deemed crucial. Yet, mask-wearing can exacerbate breathlessness and discomfort in this demographic. This study aims to assess the effects of wearing a face mask during 6-Minute-Walking-Tests (6-MWT) among COPD patients.
