Patient-generated health data using at-home monitoring devices and smart device applications are used more and more to measure value and quality in cancer care. This trial may show whether at-home monitoring programs can improve the care of patients after hospital discharge from surgery.

Ultrasound-Guided Photoacoustic Imaging for the Detection of Metastases in Inguinal Lymph Nodes

This early phase I trial studies how well ultrasound-guided photoacoustic imaging works in telling the difference between healthy and cancerous inguinal (groin) lymph nodes and how well it can detect certain features of lymph nodes, including size and shape in patients with cancer. Ultrasound-guided photoacoustic is a non-invasive imaging method that can detect and display characteristics of lymph nodes based on the level of oxygen in the cells. This imaging method may provide more accurate tumor staging and prevent unnecessary surgical interventions.

Novel Single Wave Assessment in Measuring Cardiac Dysfunction and Metabolic Syndrome in Patients With Cancer

This clinical trial studies a novel single wave assessment in measuring cardiac dysfunction and metabolic syndrome in patients with cancer. The novel single wave assessment is a hand held device that can report left ventricular ejection fraction, which measures how well the heart is pumping blood (by giving a percentage) and measures how stiff the arteries are in the heart (pulse wave velocity). A novel single wave assessment may help identify patients at increased risk for type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome (disease where patients have increased blood pressure and high blood sugar level and excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels).

Pain is one of the most common symptoms among cancer patients. Opioid therapy is generally the treatment of choice for adequate management of cancer-related pain. Knowledge of these problems may help health care providers assess the most effective treatment options for cancer patients, and inform policy makers of the adjustments that need to be made to regulations to ensure cancer patients don't lose their access to opioids.

A type of laboratory testing called rapid on site evaluation of pleural touch preparations that uses pleural biopsy tissue samples collected during an already-scheduled pleuroscopy may be able to diagnose malignant pleural effusion.
