Filter by:The specific aims of this proposal are to 1) develop the components of a behavioral economics strategy (i.e., healthy bundle defaults) to influence diet behaviors; 2) characterize the online grocery shopping behaviors and attitudes of low-income adults nationally; and 3) examine the extent to which "healthy bundles defaults" and other behavioral economic strategies increase fruit and vegetable purchases among low-income adults in an online randomized controlled experiment.
The aim is to determine whether the eNutri web application can effectively estimate the dietary intake of a UK older population. The eNutri FFQ65+ study will validate the eNutri online food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) using 100 adults aged 65+ years. The FFQ will be validated against an online 24-hour dietary recall system (Intake24) and its reproducibility will be evaluated by the completion of two FFQs within a 14-day interval. In addition, all participants will also be asked to provide dried blood spot (DBS) samples which will be analysed for key biomarkers of nutritional intake and health. Biomarker results will be compared to FFQ results to further validate the eNutri FFQ.
A Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet), a largely plant-based dietary pattern, is relevant to CRC prevention and microbial production of anti-cancer metabolites in observational studies. A MedDiet can shift BA metabolism as shown in primates and when combined with calorie restriction, shows superior adherence and weight control in humans, given its palatability. To date, no studies have tested in an RCT the effects of a MedDiet alone (MedA), WL through lifestyle intervention (WL-A) or a calorie-restricted MedDiet for WL (WL-Med) on the BA-gut microbiome axis and its relevance to CRC prevention among AAs. A multidisciplinary team combining expertise in psychology, nutrition, microbiology, molecular cell biology, computational biology, medicine and biostatistics, proposes to conduct a four-arm RCT in which 232 obese AAs, 45-75 years old complete one of the following 6-month interventions: Med-A, weight stable; WL-A, calorie restriction with no diet pattern change; WLMed; or Control. The investigators will use samples and data collected at baseline, mid-study (month-3) and post-intervention to compare the effects of the interventions on 1) Concentration and composition of circulating and fecal BAs; 2) Gut microbiota and metabolic function; and 3) Gene expression profiles of exfoliated intestinal epithelial cells.
People with SCI are at higher risk of obesity and chronic diseases, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, than the general population. Researchers currently lack data on factors that influence weight gain among people with SCI. During this one-year observational study, study staff will enroll 60 individuals with SCI while they are inpatients at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation (BSWIR). Data will be collected at 3 time periods (before discharge and 6 and 12 months after discharge) in order to better understand factors that affect weight gain over the first 12 months following discharge from inpatient rehabilitation, such as nutritional intake, environmental access, psychosocial factors, energy requirements and risk factors for metabolic syndrome. These data will be used to inform future interventions for people with SCI.
The PREDICT 3 study will build on previous research in over 2,000 individuals to further refine machine learning models that predict individual responses to foods, with the aim of advancing precision nutrition science and individualized dietary advice. The study incorporates both standardized and controlled dietary intervention, for the purpose of testing postprandial responses to specific mixed meals, in addition to a free-living period with a dietary record for measuring responses to a large variety of meals consumed in a realistic context, where the role of external factors (e.g. exercise, sleep, time of day) on postprandial responses may be determined. For the first time this PREDICT study is built on top of a commercial product which will allow access to a much larger group of participants who are already collecting large amounts of data through digital and biochemical devices that can contribute to science.
This intervention aims to evaluate the efficacy of a pilot educational intervention with deep-structure cultural tailoring for Latino ethnic groups on diet quality compared to general, surface-level healthy-eating messages.
Arterial hypertension is an independent vascular risk factor and a frequent reason for consultation in Primary Care. It generates high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and other diseases). Moreover, given that it is a modifiable factor and that there are intervention and control measures that would lead to a significant reduction in cardiovascular incidence and morbimortality, it can be stated that ETS is a major public health problem. The approach to this risk factor can be pharmacological and non-pharmacological. The non-pharmacological approach is based on lifestyle modification. Among the measures aimed at modifying lifestyles is the restriction of daily intake of sodium in the diet. Such restriction enhances the hypotensive effect of pharmacological treatment so that its application and intensification would delay the start of pharmacological therapy, as well as avoid the need to increase the dose of antihypertensive drugs or the number of drugs to be used for the control of hypertension. In relation to salt intake in the Spanish population, the average is above the figures of less than 5 grams per day recommended by the WHO. Sodium intake can be estimated by determining the 24-hour urine sodium concentration. In addition, there is a positive correlation between systolic and diastolic blood pressure figures and the excretion of sodium in urine.
This research is to develop a virtual weight loss and weight maintenance program through dietary modifications for adults with obesity. Although scientific studies have shown the feasibility of rapid and safe dietary weight loss and subsequent weight maintenance, no efficacious dietary weight management program is widely available, and thus bariatric surgery remains the most reliable approach for weight loss/management. Safe and effective dietary weight loss and subsequent weight maintenance require flexible, individualized advice by an experienced dietitian/nutritionist.
This pilot study aims to develop a protocol for home video informed dietary counseling with the goal of reducing overall sodium consumption among kidney stone formers. To accomplish this the investigators will: 1)Assess which data available on video visits are most informative to convey patient sodium consumption, and 2) Administer virtual home visits with informed dietary counseling in our intervention arm and compare this to standard dietary counseling looking specifically at the outcome of 24-hour urine sodium excretion results over time. This study will benefit dramatically from the rapid growth of telehealth medical visits as a consequence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, with the ultimate goal to improve and adapt patient dietary counseling for the prevention of kidney stone disease in the new and evolving era of telehealth.
What are the investigators trying to do? By most measures, humans consume more food than needed. Over several decades, overconsumption has led to an increase in a number of diseases, including cancer. What if this could be reversed, or slowed down, by fasting? Would that improve how cancer patients respond to chemotherapy? Could simply changing eating patterns to reduce overall intake be a way to prevent and/or manage cancer? All of these are important questions and the investigators are undertaking a new initiative to study how nutrition and dietary behaviours affect cancer patients. Fasting: A way to improve overall health and increase our defenses to cancer Fasting in various forms has been shown to have a number of health benefits. Intermittent fasting, or time restricted feeding, has been shown to reverse or improve various diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and metabolic syndrome, decrease the risk of cancer, and significantly extend the life of an individual. In previous studies, fasting was well-tolerated with notable improvements in energy levels, sense of well-being, and sleep quality. In cancer patients, clinical trials have demonstrated intermittent fasting to lessen some of the short-term side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea, fatigue, and sleep quality. How fasting alters the course of cancer or improve immune defenses is not yet known but may be an alternative way to treat or manage cancer. The study plan The investigators plan to examine the effects of intermittent fasting (time restricted feeding) in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). CLL is the most common chronic leukemia and is presently incurable. The advantage of choosing this patient population is that the cancer is easily assessed with a blood test measuring the amount of cancerous white cells (lymphocytes). Patients who consent to participate in this study will, through the support of an oncology dietitian and after a period of transition, split their daily feeding into a fasting period and a non-fasting period. This regime is as simple as skipping or having a late breakfast. At this time, participants will not be required to limit their total caloric intake. What is required from the participant? The investigators will assess whether intermittent fasting reduces the cancer by measuring the lymphocyte count in the blood over a period of 3 months. Study participants will complete questionnaires to help determine if fasting causes any change in their quality of life. The effects of intermittent fasting on a cancer control system called autophagy, as well as its effects on inflammation will be studied in the Deeley Research Centre laboratory at BC Cancer. What is the short- and long-term impact? In the short-term, if intermittent fasting can have an effect cancer lymphocyte count or on autophagy, then investigators will proceed with further studies to try and optimize the effects of intermittent fasting. In the long-term, this study is expected to be the first-ever to shed light on how intermittent fasting may be linked to cancer survival and/or growth. If true, this will open up new avenues to re-evaluate the inclusion of diet into cancer treatment protocols.
