Diet Intervention Pilot: Refining a Meal and Food Delivery Approach

A diet with a higher intake of fish and fruits, and vegetables, has shown promise in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. Intake of a diet with these components has been linked to fewer respiratory symptoms and lower rates of lung disease in multiple studies. In addition, emerging research suggests that a diet with these components may have the power to protect the body against some of the effects of exposure to air pollution. In this study, participants will receive food, meals, and counseling designed to increase their dietary intake of fish, fruits, and vegetables. The research team will test the change in diet and learn ways to optimize the participants' experience.

Late talkers (LT), representing 10-20% of children under 3, demonstrate hallmark syntax and vocabulary deficits similar to preschoolers with developmental language disorder. While effective and early interventions can mitigate the impact of late talking, not enough is known about its neural basis, yet is needed to inform the design of more individualized interventions. This proposed effort uses neuroimaging, along with behavioral methods, with the goal of better understanding the memory-language mechanisms that underlie learning and late talking, while also considering their association to treatment-related changes in LT.

When a doctor suspects cancer, often a biopsy is taken for testing to confirm if cancer is present. Usually, doctors would wait for the results of a biopsy before delivering radiation, but this may lead to a patient having to wait for a treatment that he or she urgently needs. With long wait times for biopsies in Canada, this may lead to symptoms and risks of complications from cancer in the meantime. Therefore, this study is being done to answer the following question: Is it safe and feasible to deliver radiation before obtaining a biopsy in a carefully selected group of patients who urgently need radiation treatment.

Exogenous Ketone Supplementation in Females With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 1 in 5 females of reproductive age. Commonly characterized as a disorder of infertility, PCOS is often accompanied by 3 potent cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors: insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, and elevated blood pressure. Accordingly, PCOS is associated with the development of CVD, the second leading cause of death in females in Canada. However, effective treatments to improve cardiovascular health in PCOS are lacking. Exogenous ketone monoester (KME) ingestion has been shown to improves outcomes associated with insulin resistance, endothelial function, and blood pressure regulation in healthy individuals and individuals predisposed to CVD. Therefore, oral ketone supplements offer a practical and effective strategy for improving cardiovascular health; however, this treatment has yet to be evaluated in PCOS. Therefore, the overall goal of this project is to employ KME ingestion to improve markers of cardiovascular health in females with PCOS. On two different days, participants will consume either a beverage containing a ketone supplement or a beverage containing a placebo supplement. The objectives are to compare responses between KME and placebo ingestion, and examine all outcomes related to cardiovascular health in females with PCOS in comparison with female controls of similar age and body mass index. The effects of KME ingestion will be quantified on: 1) glycemic control during an oral glucose tolerance test; 2) endothelial function using the flow-mediated dilation test; 3) blood pressure and acute blood pressure regulation; and 4) hemodynamic responses to acute exercise.

3D Printing for the Fabrication of Mandibular Implant Overdentures

CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) can be a game-changer for better access to care by edentulous patients. Digital overdentures offer potential for more satisfied patients due to better fit and can be provided faster/with lower costs. Providing digital overdentures has potential to enhance access to oral healthcare by the elderly, given the expected benefits (better quality, simpler, faster and more affordable than those obtained traditionally). However, evidence from randomized trials is crucial to verify the relevance of those benefits, especially from the patient perspective, and to confirm those benefits. This trial also serves as an opportunity to improve CAD software and materials, since it will identify technical challenges specific to the provision of digital overdentures. This randomized cross-over trial aims to reveal whether implant-retained mandibular overdentures (IMO) produced by CAD and 3D printing are more satisfactory to edentulous seniors than those fabricated using traditional methods. The investigators will recruit 26 edentulous participants (any sex/gender) amongst previous patients at McGill University, based on the following eligibility criteria: complete edentulism, elderly (age ≥60 years, according to the WHO), need for new maxillary and mandibular complete dentures, ability to complete questionnaires, and previous treatment with two implants in the anterior mandible. Each participant will receive two pairs of dentures, as per the McGill Consensus on Implant Overdentures (i.e., a mandibular overdenture opposed by a maxillary complete denture: (i) one by digital rendering of the mouth, virtual prosthetic design and 3D printing; (ii) a control pair, by traditional clinical and laboratory methods. Each pair will be worn for 3 months according to a random sequence (total follow-up: 6 months after the delivery of the first pair of dentures). Both overdentures will be retained by 2 Novaloc abutments and medium retention matrices. Outcomes will include patient satisfaction ratings and oral health-related quality of life. The investigators will evaluate other patient-reported outcomes, as well as clinician-assessed quality and cost. Outcome assessment will occur at baseline, then at three months after participants have worn each pair of dentures. Following the cross-over, participants will keep their preferred denture pair and return after 12 months to evaluate maintenance requirements, including stained and broken dentures.

This exploratory study aims to verify the impact on the severity of eczema as well as the prebiotic potential of a daily application of Omega-3 serum and cream on a skin with eczema. This study will also collect data on possible adverse effects of the products. Sixteen participants will be enrolled in this study and will be divided in two groups of 8 subjects that will receive two different treatments for forty-two days. The baseline condition will serve as a control for the effects observed after treatment on the targeted eczema area.

JoyPop Mobile Mental Health App With Post-Secondary Students

Students within post-secondary education settings are experiencing increasing stress, distress, and mental health difficulties. Many post-secondary education settings have identified student mental health and wellbeing as a priority and yet are struggling to adequately meet the needs of students. This has led to exploring whether technology can be used to help promote mental health and wellbeing among students. The JoyPop app is one mobile mental health app with a growing evidence base. It was developed to support improved emotion regulation - a key challenge among students struggling with distress and mental health difficulties. Using a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design, the primary objective of this research is to determine the effectiveness of the JoyPop app in improving emotion regulation among post-secondary students when compared to no intervention. The secondary objectives are to: (1) Assess change in mental health, wellbeing, and resilience between students in each condition to better understand the app's broader impact; (2) Conduct an economic analysis to determine whether receiving the app reduces other health service use and associated costs; (4) Assess students' perspective on the quality of the JoyPop app.
