Filter by:People cough in order to clear their airways. Most coughs are caused by viruses and settle down by themselves, but some people develop persistent coughing which can be anywhere from 8 weeks to several years. This is called chronic cough. People with chronic cough find the symptom distressing and it can have a major impact on their quality of life. Patients with chronic cough often report a sensation at the back of their throat which makes them feel an urge to cough. There is some evidence that Lidocaine (an anaesthetic used during medical procedures) can suppress a person's cough when given to patients via a nebuliser (a machine that turns liquid into a fine mist). It is currently unknown whether using a local anaesthetic, such as Lidocaine, in the form of a throat spray would successfully suppress a person's cough. A throat spray would be an easier treatment option in chronic cough patients. Thus, the investigators research aims to compare cough rates, severity and urge to cough scores between Lidocaine throat spray and nebulised Lidocaine.
Studies show, guidelines state, and performance measures assert that antibiotic prescribing for uncomplicated acute bronchitis is inappropriate. However, clinicians prescribe antimicrobials in over 60% of the 22.5 million acute bronchitis visits in the United States each year. Previous successful interventions have only reduced the antimicrobial prescribing rate to 40% or 50%. It is unknown if the antimicrobial prescribing rate for acute bronchitis can be brought to near zero percent in actual practice while maintaining patient safety and satisfaction. The goal of this study is to develop an Electronic Health Record (EHR)-integrated algorithm for the diagnosis and treatment of adults with acute bronchitis with a goal of reducing the antibiotic prescribing rate to near zero percent.
Multicenter clinical trial, phase III, controlled by active medicine, double-blind, randomized, enroll 208 subjects, above 12 years old, that suffer acute inflammation upper airway characterized by non-productive cough, daytime/nighttime, with duration for at least 3 and no more than 5 consecutive days (without systemic/topic use of medication during this period) followed by nasal congestion, with or without associate other nasal symptoms (sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching and/or mouth breathing). The subjects will be allocated in 2 parallel groups, and will receive the medicines of study, according of the randomization.
Multicenter clinical trial, phase III, controlled by active medicine, open, randomized, enroll 962 children, 2 to 12 years old, that suffer acute inflammation upper airway characterized by non-productive cough, daytime/nighttime, with duration for at least 3 and no more than 5 consecutive days (without systemic/topic use of medication during this period) followed by nasal congestion, with or without associate other nasal symptoms (sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching and/or mouth breathing). The subjects will be allocated in 2 parallel groups, and will receive the medicines of study, according of the randomization.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy and safety of procaterol hydrochloride with inhaled glucocorticoid in treatment patients with cough variant asthma (CVA).
The aims of this study are - Demonstrating superior efficacy of Prospan® Hustenzäpfchen compared to Placebo in children suffering from acute bronchitis accompanied by coughing - Characterisation of safety and tolerability of Prospan® Hustenzäpfchen in comparison with placebo.
It is believed that the suppository consisting of guaiacol, menthol, camphor and eucalyptol, by their pharmacological properties already established for each component, has the ability to reduce the signs and symptoms related to upper respiratory infections in a manner equivalent (not inferior) to medicine used as a comparator in this study and higher than the suppository containing only guaiacol concentration of 12.5 mg.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the efficacy of azithromycin to produce a significant change in the cough-related health status, measured with the Dutch version of the Leicester Cough Questionnaire in patiënts with COPD gold classification 2-4 and chronic productive coughing.
Cough is a common, disruptive and at times disabling symptom which often prompts patients to seek medical attention. Determining the cause(s) of chronic cough can be challenging, and costly. Asthma and other airway disorders are among the most common causes of chronic cough; and cough can be the sole symptom of asthma. Little is known about why some patients with asthma primarily cough and do not develop the other symptoms of asthma such as shortness of breath or wheeze. Improved understanding of the reasons for these different manifestations may lead to new and more effective treatment strategies. We have notices differences in pressure measurements inside the chest in patients who mostly cough during induced bronchoconstriction, which might be part of the explanation for varying symptoms. This study will compare lung mechanical responses during methacholine and mannitol-induced induced airway narrowing between typical asthma, cough variant asthma (CVA) and an airway inflammatory disorder that is not asthma. The purpose of this research is to explore the pathophysiology and sensory-mechanics of cough in individuals with asthma, CVA and methacholine-induced cough but normal airway sensitivity using mannitol and high-dose methacholine bronchoprovocation testing.
The specific aim of this proposed pilot study is to compare two standardized processes (paper and electronic) to deliver a customized MedlinePlus health information prescription.
