Filter by:The high energy nutritional supplement Resource® Energy is approved for human nutritional support in various clinical conditions, yet it has been used off-label to alleviate the effects of hunger during bowel preparation for colonoscopy. Its impact in mucosa visualization quality and hunger alleviation is unknown. The product is liquid and nutritious but it is not transparent, thus it is conceivable that it could alleviate the discomfort of hunger during the preparation but possibly compromising mucosa visualization. In this study, participants who will undergo a colonoscopy (requested for an explicit medical indication) will take two bottles of the nutritional supplement during the usual bowel preparation. The quality of mucosal visualization and the participants opinion regarding satiety and product tolerance during bowel preparation will then be analysed.
Colonoscopy is the most useful exam used to evaluate colorectal diseases, like colorectal polyps and cancer. The appropriate bowel preparation is indispensable for colonoscopy procedures. Polyethylene glycol solution (PEG) is the most frequent laxative medication. However, the taste is poor, and patients need to drink a lot of liquids to obtain adequate visualization of the mucosal surface. In fact, no laxative has all the characteristics of an ideal medication. Lactulose is an osmotic laxative which widely used in cirrhosis and constipation patients, and could inhibit bacterial in the colon to increase colon cleanliness and prolong the effect time of PEG. Previous study demonstrate PEG combined with lactulose has a significant improvement in the quality of bowel preparation compared with PEG alone. The present study aim to assess the efficacy of lactulose with or without PEG in bowel preparation to improve mucosal visualization, reduced volume of fluid consumed, and preparation intolerance.
Colonoscopy is the technique of choice for the evaluation of the mucosa of the colon. To be able to do the procedure in optimal conditions, it needs to be clean. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a preparation as safe and tolerable as possible. This preparation generally consists in a low residue diet the days before the colonoscopy and in the intake of a laxative solution. In previous studies, it has been shown that the low residue diet does not play a relevant role as it was considered before. Recent studies demonstrated that reducing the days of low residue diet does not worsen the cleansing and improves the patient experience. The results of this study are required for determining the role of diet restrictive diet in colon cleansing.
The present study was conducted with 44 patients who applied to the Endoscopy Unit of a university hospital for sedation-free colonoscopy between January 2, 2020 and September 28, 2020, met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. The patients were homogeneously divided into experimental (n=22) and control (n=22) groups based on their gender and history of colonoscopy. The patients in the experimental group watched a 360 degree virtual reailty (VR) video with atmospheric background music over images and sounds of nature through virtual reality glasses while no application was performed for the patients in the control group during the procedure. The "Demographic Information Form", "Trait Anxiety Scale", "Visual Analog Scale-Pain", "Visual Analog Scale-Anxiety", "Vital Signs Monitoring Chart" and "Satisfaction Evaluation on the Virtual Reality Glasses Application" forms were used in the data collection phase. For the study, an ethics committee approval was obtained in addition to written consent by the institutions and patients. Numbers, percentages, the Chi-square test, the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for data analysis.
