Filter by:Pain is a common symptom of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and has a significant impact on patient quality of life. Pain will frequently be the presenting complaint and is experienced throughout the disease course. Up to 70% of patients experience pain in active disease, and up to half (20-50%) of patients will experience pain in remission. Pain in IBD is widely recognised as a biopsychosocial construct, with visceral hypersensitivity, as well as depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress and fear avoidance correlating positively with IBD-pain. There is increasing understanding of the psychological interaction and need for psychological management within IBD. Psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) have been used widely in other conditions, such as chronic pain, fatigue and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Although neither ACT nor CBT have been used specifically for pain in IBD, ACT has become a regular therapy in the management of chronic pain and a large number of studies have found it to be effective, particularly in relation to improving functioning and decreasing distress, quality of life and physical wellbeing. This study design is a crossover randomised controlled trial of ACT versus treatment-as-usual (TAU) in people with CD and chronic abdominal pain. The research team aim to assess the feasibility of ACT for reducing the impact of abdominal pain and its associated psychological burden in people with Crohn's disease (CD). The study will investigate the acceptability of ACT to people with CD and chronic pain, specifically testing issues of eligibility, recruitment, retention rates, patient experience and performance of proposed outcome measures. This will inform the design of a subsequent large multi-centre randomised controlled trial (RCT) with long-term follow-up.
The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact on the health-related quality of life of patients with refractory symptoms, who have been referred to the HUGCDN Chronic Pain Unit for adjuvant palliative treatment with ozone therapy between June-2022 and December-2025
This research study will evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) on homeless and at risk for homelessness veterans with chronic pain for 12 weeks.
Since 2014, the Queen Mary Hospital, a tertiary teaching hospital in Hong Kong, has commenced the provision of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) services with structured guidelines, standardized protocols and comprehensive pre- and post-operative assessments. It is hoped that the needs of chronic pain patients, especially those who are refractory to conventional medical management, can be better addressed with the introduction of SCS. Hence, through the proposed retrospective study, the investigator aim to systematically evaluate the use of SCS in Queen Mary Hospital, thereby providing evidence with regard to its efficacy and safety for pain management.
Pain is a very common and disabling symptom in Parkinson's disease, yet it is often untreated. This study will assess the impact of home-based physical and cognitive exercise interventions to reduce pain in this disease. This approach would offer an easily implemented and affordable way to encourage and maintain use of these interventions by patients virtually indefinitely through remote access technology. The study findings may help VA clinicians provide optimal care for the many Veterans with Parkinson's disease and chronic pain.
This study evaluates the postoperative analgesic effects of transversalis fascia plane block and anterior quadratus lumborum block in patients having cesarean section under general anesthesia. General anesthesia will be performed to all patients for the surgery.

In the current clinical and scientific reality, conservative treatment is the most coherent clinical management with a view to the proper rehabilitation of patients with chronic neck pain, with a trend towards the use of therapeutic exercise. However, some uncertainty about the effectiveness of therapeutic exercises still remains, requiring further studies with high methodological rigor, especially with regard to multimodal treatment, such as the combination of therapeutic exercises with photobiomodulation. Thus, the objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of adding photobiomodulation to a program of specific therapeutic exercises for the treatment of individuals with chronic non-specific neck pain. To this end, 60 participants will be randomized into three groups: therapeutic exercise group + photobiomodulation (n = 20), and therapeutic exercise group. There will be 8 treatment sessions and participants will be evaluated before, after the 8 sessions, and 4 weeks after the end of treatment using the Numerical Pain Scale, Neck Disability Index, Catastrophic Thoughts about Pain Scale, and Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale. In the statistical analysis, a linear mixed model will be applied, considering the interaction between the time and group factors. Finally, the addition of photobiomodulation to a therapeutic exercise program is expected to generate clinical improvements for patients with chronic neck pain.
