Filter by:Near vision deterioration during aging results from a decrease in accomodation amplitude (AA). Myocardial regeneration is limited, and cardiac aging is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Thus, the investigators investigated the association between cardiac aging and AA. The subjects (500, mean 50-year-old subjects, with equal males and females) were divided into two groups according to AA measured with a Raf ruler. Biomicroscopy was used to capture images of the lens nucleus in the unaccommodated state, followed by images of a 4 diopter (D) accommodated state. The nucleus diameter change at 1 D accomodation was measured using ImageJ. Cardiac conduction system differences were evaluated using electrocardiography, and cardiac autonomic aging was assessed based on heart rate variability. Myocardial aging was assessed based on diastolic dysfunction.
Climate change not only affects the planet's natural resources, but also severely impacts human health. An individual's ability to adequately cope with short- or long-term increases in ambient temperature is critical for maintaining health and wellbeing. Prolonged increases in temperature (heatwaves) pose a serious health risk for older adults, who have a reduced capacity to efficiently regulate body temperature. However, information regarding the impact of age on body temperature regulation during prolonged exposure to extreme heat is lacking, as is research on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing heat strain in such situations. This project will address these important knowledge gaps by exposing healthy young and older adults to a prolonged (9 hour) heat exposure, with conditions representative of heatwaves in temperate continental climates. An additional cohort of older adults will complete the same heatwave simulation but will be briefly (2 hours) exposed to cooler conditions (22-23°C) mid-way through the session (akin to visiting a cooling centre or cooled location). The investigators will evaluate age-related differences in the capacity to dissipate heat via direct air calorimetry (a unique device that permits the precise measurement of the heat dissipated by the human body) and their effect on the regulation of body temperature. The investigators anticipate that older adults will exhibit progressive increases in the heat stored in the body throughout the simulated heatwave, resulting in progressive increases in body core temperature. Further, older adults exposed to brief-mid day cooling will rapidly gain heat upon re-exposure to high ambient temperatures. As a result, by the end of exposure body temperatures will be similar to the group not removed from the heat.
The Xbox Kinect seems to be a good alternative for the older adults to perform physical activities at times that are typically associated with sedentary behaviors. The Xbox Kinect active video game has been used in various parts of the world as entertainment. The study of metabolic, cardiovascular and psychological responses during these activities may bring relevant information regarding the intensity of the exercises and, consequently, about the possibility of using these games to maintain and / or improve the cardiorespiratory fitness of the older adults. In addition, the present study may clarify the responses of activities on Xbox Kinect in elderly people with anxiety and depression symptoms. Will be selected 100 older adults. All volunteers will initially perform assessments of resting metabolic rate, cardiorespiratory fitness, functional tests, as well as subjective assessments of physical activity level, anxiety and mood. Subsequently, they will perform activities with body movements on the Xbox Kinect, which will be compared with sedentary behavior activity (TV / Movie). All activities will be monitored by means of a gas analyzer, which will record information about the behavior of energy expenditure, resting heart rate and activity. In addition, assessments of perception of effort and fun during activities will be made through subjective scales. The effects of Xbox Kinect activity on anxiety symptoms and mood will also be assessed.
An individual's ability to adequately cope with short- or long-term increases in ambient temperature is critical for maintaining health and wellbeing. Prolonged increases in temperature (heatwaves) pose a serious health risk for older adults, who have a reduced capacity to regulate body temperature. Currently, however, there is a lack of information regarding how different environmental conditions experienced during heatwaves impact body temperature regulation and physiological function. This is particularly important in the context of ambient conditions in the home, where older adults spend the majority of their time. This project will address this important issue by exposing healthy older adults to prolonged (8-hour) simulated heatwaves comprising a range of environmental conditions representative of an actively cooled domicile through to a worst-case scenario (i.e., no capacity for home cooling). The investigators will directly measure their ability to regulate their body temperature and the associated impact on the autonomic control of the heart. The investigators anticipate that physiological strain will be mild during prolonged exposure to conditions below the currently recommended thresholds set by Toronto Public Health (26°C). However, at higher indoor temperatures, impairments in body temperature and cardiovascular regulation will be seen.
Worldwide, the number of older adults is expected to more than double by 2050 and more than triple by 2100, with most of the increase in developing countries. This situation has become a challenge to health professions such as physical therapy, since aging involves a gradual reduction in the capacity to adapt and an increase in vulnerability to health issues such as chronic non-communicable diseases and musculoskeletal disorders. The respiratory system, as the rest of the body, is exposed to both physiological aging and disease. According to the World Health Organization , respiratory diseases such as trachea, bronchi, or lung cancer, lower respiratory tract infections, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are found in the third, fifth, and sixth cause of death, respectively, among the top ten. Therefore, bronchopulmonary and thoracic pathology constitutes an important problem for Public Health, both due to the high number of affected subjects and to their potential severity For this reason, the recommendations of the European, North American and national societies, highlight, among other aspects, the importance of the prevention of these diseases. They also insist on the need to maintain the integrity of the thoraco-abdominal anatomical elements and preventive treatment in those at risk, before symptoms appear. These recommendations together with the change of perspective that is being taken into account when treating aging have led to the fact that in the last decade more research has been started on the respiratory system in older people without respiratory problems. The aim of this trial is to investigate whether manual therapy, elastic band exercise or walking can mitigate the effects of age-related changes in lung function in adults over 60 years old. Also whether there is a difference in effect between the different forms of therapy.
TITLE: Desing and implementation of a Immersive Virtual Reality exercise program to improve balance in older people INTRO: Older people grow around the world at a faster rate than any other age group, resulting in an accelerated aging of the population and an increase in life expectancy. In response to this new reality, active aging programs and strategies are especially relevant and it based in physical activity practice, whose main objective is to maintain or improve the functionality of the person, even though the loss of balance in the elderly represents a significant difficulty in their lives, since this aspect reduces their postural control, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. Our project REVIEM (Inmersive Virtual Reality Exergaming in Olders) is a new strategy to improve the balance in older people, using a exercise program with Virtual Reality glasses for this purpose. HYPOTHESIS: The practice of REVIEM protocol based on physical function training in older adults collaborates in the maintenance and improvement of functional capacities, reducing the number of falls and increasing their personal autonomy. GENERAL GOALS: 1.1 Design and implement a REVIEM exercise program / protocol to improve balance in older people 1.2 Analyze the effects of this REVIEM program / protocol, in the short and medium term in institutionalized individuals. 1.3 Identify if there is a relationship between the variables that induce fragility and functional dependence and the REVIEM protocol SPECIFIC GOALS: 2.1 Determine the REVIEM protocol to improve differential effects for 6 minutes a day (3 days a week for 10 weeks) 2.1.1 The improvement of the functional independence of individuals by improving balance, reducing the risk of falls and proper development in activities of daily living. 2.1.2 The improvement of gait. 2.1.3 The improvement of quality of life. 2.1.4 The improvement of handgrip. 2.2 Determine the parameters related to immerse virtual reality exposure. 2.2.1 Safety of the virtual reality exposure 2.2.2 Usability of the virtual reality exposure 2.2.3 Personal experiences and satisfaction of the virtual reality exposure METHODS: Design: Randomized controlled trial. The institutionalized elderly from the geriatric center Saraiva Senior Center in Pontevedra, Spain, will be invited to take part in the study. After they meet the selection criteria, they will be assigned to on experimental group and one control group. Information regarding sociodemographic characteristics and a clinical anamnesis of the participants will be collected. Intervention: Two groups (experimental and control). Experimental group will perform the REVIEM protocol sessions (6 min) focused on the upper and lower limbs. (3 sessions per week for 10 weeks). All sessions will begin with a warm-up focused on the stimulation of coordination and joint mobilization, so that the body is predisposed both centrally and peripherally for the performance of the session and will end with a stretching routine accompanied by breathing cycles calm and controlled. The session will be supervised by the physiotherapist, occupational therapist or expert in physical exercise of the center. Control group will participate in the usual activities proposed by the center management. Assessments: 4 evaluations will be carried: initial, intermediate (at 1 month), final (at 10 weeks) and follow-up (1 month after to end the program). The contents of the assessmentens will be: 1. Characteristics of patients: "ad hoc" record sheet that will include data on age, sex, associated pathologies and pharmacological treatment. 2. REVIEM protocol. Safety (Simulator Sickness Questionnaire), Usability (System Usability Scale) and personal experiences (Game Experience Questionnaire and "ad hoc" interview notebook) 2. Balance, gait and fall risk (Tinetti Test) 3. Functional mobility and lower limbs strength (Five times sit to stand test) 4. Functional autonomy (Timed Up and Go Test) 5. Quality of life (SF-12 Scale) 6. Handgrip (dynamometer) Hypothesis : our findings aim to support the use of new health technologies in the field of rehabilitation and healthcare for the elderly, achieving a feasible and safety Immersive Virtual Reality exergaming program.
A hallmark of ageing is loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia). Sarcopenia is explained, partially, by reduced responsiveness of muscle to dietary protein. This 'anabolic resistance' can be overcome by consuming protein in close proximity to exercise and/or adequate amounts across the day. Consequently, there is momentum for a greater protein RDA for older individuals. Concurrently, there is a need to establish an evidence base for the efficacy of non-animal proteins. Mycoprotein is a sustainable non-animal derived protein that imposes a significantly lower environmental burden than animal sources. Our previous work suggests that mycoprotein has the potential to support muscle tissue remodelling to a similar extent as animal derived protein sources. The study will employ a deuterium oxide tracer to quantify muscle protein synthesis over a period of three days in response to a vegan diet or animal based diet, alongside daily unilateral resistance exercise in older adults.
This study evaluates implementation of the Village Model to support older people living with HIV.
In this six-week behavioral intervention, sedentary older adults will receive daily health messaging via their smart phone to better understand their daily activities and emotions. Participants undergo structural and functional brain imaging before and after the intervention along with measures of their behavioral, emotional and thinking functions.
