Development and Validation of New "SNU Illustrated Pain Rating Scale" as a Tool for Postoperative Pain Assessment

The numeric rating scale (NRS), one of the most widely used pain scales in clinical practice, although convenient, is often subject to bias because it requires abstract thinking from both the patient and the evaluator. Compared to numbers, traumatic pain, when visualized appropriately, has potential advantage as a means to indicate and communicate the severity of pain. Given that they are standardized in terms of body parts, wound size, and bleeding volume, illustrations of traumatic pain along with external somatic stimuli that caused it can be used to serve as effective visual anchors to supplement a pain scale by giving more concrete information to the patient. The purpose of this study is to develop Seoul National University Illustrated Pain Scale(SNUIPS) using pictures of traumatic pain, and verify the validity and effectiveness of this scale in comparison with those of NRS.

The Role of Cognitive Function and Electroencephalography on Acute and Chronic Pain After Surgery

The project will apply the methods of clinical observation experiment, (1) to collect the cognitive function data preoperatively and early postoperatively, as well as the pain score data at multiple time points pre- and postoperatively, and to observe the role of the degree of recovery of early postoperative cognitive function on acute pain and chronic pain after surgery. (2) to collect the resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) preoperatively, and to assess the role of EEG index system on the prediction of the degree of recovery of early postoperative cognitive function as well as the acute pain and chronic pain after surgery.

The aim of this clinical study in healthy participants is to investigate the safety and tolerability of GRT0151Y after multiple oral intake of different increasing doses and to evaluate the pharmacological effects (action of the compound) by means of pupillometry (measuring the pupil size of the eye) and Cold Presser Test (measuring the pain when immersing the hand in 2 degree Celsius cold water). An additional aim of the study is to investigate the pharmacokinetics of GRT0151Y (how it is taken up into the body and how it is excreted from the body)."

Benzodiazepines for the Reduction of Distress and Pain During and After Emergency Department Care

Lumbar Plexus and Suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca Blocks For Total Hip Replacement

The nerves from lumbar plexus (LP) are the current target to achieve analgesia after a total hip arthroplasty (THA). Lumbar plexus block (LPB) is an alternative that provides optimal postoperative analgesia. However, many adverse effects and complications have been reported due to its proximity to vital structures. Because of these shortcomings, an alternative to block the LP nerves is required. In a recent trial suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca Block (SFIB) was reported to provide reliable analgesia in THA. SFIB may carry a lower risk profile, however, no study has compared the efficacy of LPB and SFIB in this setting. Thus, this randomized trial is set out to compare US guided LPB and SFIB for analgesia after THA. The hypothesis is that both blocks would result in similar postoperative opioid (morphine) consumption at 24 hours and, therefore, designed the study as an equivalence trial.

Secondary variables are the evaluation of the patients' pain experience and the general patients' willingness to collect data with regard to pain by using technological devices themselves or with support of healthcare professionals.

Tramadol/Diclofenac Fixed-dose Combination Phase III Trial in Acute Pain After Third Molar Extraction

This study evaluated a new drug fixed-dose combination tablet (FDC) called tramadol/diclofenac at two different strengths (fixed doses of 25 milligrams [mg] of tramadol and of diclofenac or of 50 mg each). Tramadol and diclofenac each relieve pain, but they do so by different mechanisms. They were used alone as comparator drug in this study. Both are marketed drugs and are standard treatment for acute pain, including wisdom tooth removal.
