Filter by:This study is being conducted in 8 rural counties in Alabama and Mississippi (4 per state). Approximately 400 overweight or obese African American women living in the selected counties will participate in a 2-year weight loss study.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary malignant liver tumor and has a grave prognosis. Obesity is an epidemic in the US.Patients with HCC and obesity are not candidates for liver transplantation, depriving them of the best option for cure from HCC. Recent studies have shown that blocking blood vessels to a particular portion of the stomach (bariatric or left gastric artery embolization) can temporarily decrease levels of the appetite inducing hormone ghrelin, and result in weight loss. The purpose of this study is to determine if Left gastric artery embolization (LGAE) in patients with cirrhosis and HCC who are not transplant candidates due to morbid obesity, leads to clinically significant weight loss with eligibility for liver transplantation.
Obesity is an epidemic in the US. With progression of obesity, Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has been a growing public health issue. Presently there is no cure for NASH.Prevention of progression of fibrosis in NASH is crucial, as they are at a high risk for cirrhosis and may need liver transplant. Recent studies have shown that blocking blood vessels to a particular portion of the stomach (bariatric or left gastric artery embolization) can temporarily decrease levels of the appetite inducing hormone ghrelin, and result in weight loss. The purpose of this study is to determine if Left gastric artery embolization (LGAE) in patients with obesity and NASH leads to clinically significant weight loss with improvement of NASH.
The goal of this study is to evaluate the effect of three weight management interventions (group phone conference calls, individual phone calls, and enhanced usual care) on weight across 18 months in overweight and obese adults recruited through and treated by rural primary care clinics.
This is a substudy to a randomised trial investigating the effect of liraglutide on body weight and pain in overweight or obese patients with knee osteoarthritis (NCT02905864). In the parent trial, patients will be subjected to an 8-week diet intervention phase including a low-calorie diet and dietetic counseling, after which patients will be randomised to receive either liraglutide 3 mg or liraglutide 3 mg placebo as an add-on to dietetic guidance on re-introducing regular foods and a focus on continued motivation to engage in a healthy lifestyle. This substudy aims to investigate any changes in Ultrasound (US) measures associated with the initial 8-week weight loss intervention.
This is a substudy to a randomised trial investigating the effect of liraglutide on body weight and pain in overweight or obese patients with knee osteoarthritis (NCT02905864). This substudy aims to investigate any changes in biomarkers associated with the initial 8-week weight loss intervention
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of meal size and texture on the levels of incretin hormone, GLP-1, after Gastric Bypass Surgery (GBP). Patterns of food intake change after bariatric surgery and patients often eat multiple small low-calorie meals, a pattern that may affect blood glucose as well as incretin levels. Whether the release of GLP-1 after an oral challenge or a single liquid meal has any physiological relevance in 'real life' setting of multiple small meals diet is unclear.

This substudy aims to investigate any changes in MRI associated with the initial 8-week weight loss intervention, and the value of CT scans in predicting the effect of weight loss.
This study will help determine the appropriate type, amount and intensity of physical activity most beneficial for preventing weight regain after weight loss in older adults.
The study is an open intervention study with the aim to determine the effects of weight-loss treatment with Low-Energy liquid Diet (LED) on disease activity, quality of life and markers of the metabolic syndrome in patients with psoriatic arthritis and obesity.
