Impact of a Smartphone Application on Postpartum Weight Loss and Breastfeeding Rates Among Low-income, Urban Women

Breastfed babies have significant health benefits extending beyond infancy, including lower rates of childhood obesity and infection. Mothers who breastfeeding also have health benefits, including increased rates of postpartum weight loss. Low-income women are less likely to breastfeed comparatively; this disparity may be due to misconceptions about breastfeeding benefits or poor social support. Based on survey results and focus groups of low-income women, the investigators designed a novel smart-phone application to confront barriers women perceived prevented them from breastfeeding and propose the first-ever randomized controlled trial describing the impact a smart phone app has on postpartum weight loss and breastfeeding rates among low-income women.

Effects of WB-EMS and Specific Dietary Supplements on Cancer Patients

Patients suffering from cancer often experience a loss of muscle mass and strength during disease and its therapy. Muscle wasting is the main characteristic of the so-called cancer cachexia syndrome and responsible for many therapy-related complications and a poorer prognosis of the patient. Stabilizing muscle mass should therefore be a great goal in cancer care. Physical exercise and nutrition are promising measures to combat cancer-related muscle atrophy but conventional exercise programs may not always be suitable for physical-weakened patients and increased catabolic processes are difficult to overcome by normal Nutrition - especially in advanced cancer. Therefore, the present study aims to test a combined approach of specific nutritional supplementation and exercise using the novel strength training method of Whole-Body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS). The study investigates the effect of a 12-week WB-EMS training combined with a dietary supplementation of β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), L-carnitine (LC) or the omega-3-fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) on skeletal muscle mass, body composition, physical function, nutritional and inflammatory status, fatigue and quality of life in cancer patients undergoing oncological treatment. The results of this study may help to clarify the effectiveness of those combined interventions to counteract muscle wasting and other symptoms of cancer cachexia.

There is an ongoing and worsening problem with obesity in the developed, and much of the developing world. Although it has long been realized that Western diets that are rich in sugar and fat play an important role in this, it has only recently been realized that exposure to these diets, particularly in childhood, can damage the part of the brain that determines how much fat there is in the body. The result of this damage is that the so-called "set-point" for fat in this part of the brain is pushed upwards. There is a lot of evidence from animals that activating the brain's balance (vestibular) system pushes this set-point for fat downwards to cause fat loss, probably because this tricks the brain into thinking that the animal is more physically active. The aim of this study is to see whether the same effect can be triggered in humans by non-invasively stimulating the vestibular system with a small electrical current through the skin behind their ears.
